Jess Foley | 38 comments TBR: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas Richard II by William Shakespeare Germinal by Émile Zola Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

09/1: Tried listening to the audio book The Fifth Risk Undoing Democracy by Michael Lewis and failed miserably to retain anything. Went back to the beginning of the physical paper back last night and I'm so glad I did. Currently on p. 206. Aim to finish today, and I did. And here is my review: /review/show...
09/2: Read the Act 1 of Richard II by William Shakespeare along to a radio broadcast of the play courtesy of the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park. (that counts right?) 09/11: Finished Say Nothing A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe & here is my review: After 4 years of research and 7 trips to Northern Ireland, Keefe presents the reader with a 402-paged- mosaic of memory recounting the Troubles in Northern Ireland. As the back of the book will tell you...
Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland opens with mysterious of abduction of 38- year old, Jean McConville a widow with ten children to raise alone. Juxtaposed sharply with the story of radicalization of Dolours Price and her sister Marian two of the first women to enter the Irish Republican Army as front line soldiers, and hang over of life-long regret which followed and haunted them for the rest of their lives.
In the his "Note on Sources" Keefe says: "Memory is a slippery thing, so I sought whenever possible to establish corroboration of individual recollections.(p.417)
Radden Keefe attributes the seed of this expansive narrative nonfiction to an obituary he found published in the New York Times on January 25th 2013 of Dolours Price:

09/19: Finished Insane Clown President Dispatches from the 2016 Circus by Matt Taibbi & here is my review: Matt Taibbi's astutely, bleak Insane Clown President: Dispatches from the 2016 Circus is basically an adult, Hunter S. Thompson-esque, horror version of Jon Stone's classic The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone The Monster at the End of this Book starring the Lovable, Furry Old Grover. (Because you know, the monster at the end of Matt's book is His Orange-ness, Trump).
The only short shots of hope Taibbi offers the reader are found in the chapters about Bernie Sanders. ( But all hope in Bernie has evaporated. He could have been our FDR, but nope. We don't deserve him, and I'm done. Too sore a subject).
Insane Clown President may have been published three years ago but it accurately reflects the hopelessness of this American moment with Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg now passed.& Yes I snapped a pic of the very last sentence in this book because it's perfect. I did to this book what Trump's done to this country. #spoiledit #PerfectPandemicRead

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Hello everyone, can you believe it is the middle of September? How are you doing? How has your reading month been? Do you have any favorites that you would like to share?

I have had a few that I liked, but a favorite so far this month is The Rainbow Troops by Andrea Hirata. It is a coming-of-age story set in Indonesia.

Jo-Anne (fish44) | 349 comments I really thought I was doing okay but when I looked at the number of books I've read, I realized I'm not doing very well after all. I can't stay focused so I'm not reading as much as I usually do.

My favourite book this month was The Magic Under His Nose by Candice Gilmer. It's fun romance where a man has a fairy godmother.

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments Leane,

That looks really good, and it looks like something that might spark up my reading.

I've been reading, some of the books are tedious, and others are good, but not real page-turners. I've been feeling sluggish all summer. I am not as brave as Kat to DNF books. I always feel like I have to finish a book, once I start it.

I am unsure of another book I’m reading but going to give it a proper chance and try and read a good amount in one sitting, Majority of the books I read until the end when I’m not feeling them I give a low rating. Occasionally it’s been a bit better but it’s been like the last 10% that’s saved it. I need to be gripped the full way, and hate padding. I wouldn’t say dnf is brave just essential as life’s too short and too many good books out there.

Leane I don't like to but I will DNF a book. It's usually within the first 100 pages, if I still haven't gotten into it, it's a longer book and I don't want to waste my time or if it's not what I thought it was going to be.

I agree with you, Kat. Way too many good books out there.

Karen (karinlib) | 2108 comments I gave DNFing a little thought this morning over coffee. I rarely consciously DNF. I came up with 3 thoughts: 1. I think it's because I read so many books at one time (up to 8 at a time), that when some of them fall off, it's not because I don't want to read them, it's because I become focused on other books; 2. I stay away from certain genres, that I know I won't like, for example, I am not a fan of celebrity biographies; 3. There are very few genres that I don't like.

That makes sense. I have come to realize when I'm reading multiple books I tend to favor one of two of them more than another.

I noticed this earlier. I was hoping it would work itself out.

I noticed that too, and was wondering what was going on. But know I know!
