The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter
This was a different kind of read for me. It took me a long time to read, largely because it took a while to get into it, and I found it easier to put down and come back to than many books are for me. I'm sure the stress of the current circumstances played a role too. However, I did keep coming back. The premise is that a law professor, Talcott Garland, has to follow clues left by his recently-deceased father, who was once a potential Supreme Court pick until his fortunes changed. The trail leads him into and out of all manner of buried family secrets, alongside his slightly obsessive sister Mariah and various friends and enemies. Along the way, we learn about his own marital problems, race relations in an elite law school, and more. There is a LOT to unpack in the book, which makes it (for me at least) slow going, but not unenjoyable. I didn't put the book down thinking, wow, I loved it, but neither did I feel like it was a waste of time.

Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness
No reason to read this if you didn't already read and enjoy the original Discovery of Witches trilogy. This book really felt like an author trying to find a way to cash in further on the success of her previous books when she really didn't have much in the way of new ideas. This book is backstory on Marcus, one of the secondary characters from the trilogy, as well as information about the transformation to vampire of his fiance, Phoebe. Overall, there was little plot or tension to this story, which made it more like tea with friends than like a riveting novel.
The narrator for the audiobook doesn't help things. The narrator's voice occasionally put emphasis in strange spots or seemed to stumble over certain names. I read the first three books on my kindle; I probably should have read this one as well, but the audio was available from the library faster than the kindle version, so I thought I'd try it. If there are more books in this series, I'll probably go back to the kindle version.

Island of Silence by Lisa McMann
Lexile: 820
This book contains perhaps the most perfect one-sentence summary of all YA books ever: "We have a government to overtake, and we need to be together on this." Isn't that just every one of these books?
This book picks up immediately where the previous book ended. These are not stand-alone novels. If you're going to read this series (which I only recommend if you are actually a middle-grader, not if you are, like me, and adult reading with kids), you should read them in order. There's plenty of action in this book, and even a little bit of character development.
Still, these books aren't really entertaining for the adult reader. My elementary and middle school kids are loving them, but I've read a lot of better YA series--try Keeper of the Lost Cities, The Lightning Thief, or even Fablehaven before you end up here.
I think I'm stuck though. So onwards to the third book seeing as how this ended with a cliffhanger leading directly into the start of the third book.

Books Do Furnish a Room by Anthony Powell
Post-war London is bleak with buildings reduced to rubble from the bombings, and people feeling the loss of good friends who died in the war. Nick Jenkins is returning to civilian work writing a book, and reviewing books for a left-wing magazine. He's working for a new publishing company where we are reacquainted with literary types from previous books, and introduced to the novelist X. Trapnel. Kenneth Widmerpool, a MP, writes economic and political articles for the magazine. Femme fatale Pamela Widmerpool has a new victim fall for her.
There are lots of cultural references and humor in Anthony Powell's writing. He knows first-hand what it's like to be a writer and book reviewer, and uses satire in his depiction of the publishing industry. "Books Do Furnish a Room" is the tenth book in "A Dance to the Music of Time" series.

Death of an Expert Witness by P.D. James
There are a lot of characters in this. I found the novel constructed well enough that keeping them straight wasn't a problem. Even Dalgliesh's sargeant named Massingham, and one of the scientist's named Middlemass didn't offer even a moment to do a double take.
She continues to develop Adam Dalgliesh's character. In each installment, we learn a bit more or something different, so that with each read he becomes more fully-fleshed. I find it interesting that his sergeant isn't always the same man. Other mystery series seem to have a duo, but not here. It's noticeable, but not disconcerting.
The mystery is good. I'm not good at figuring these things out anyway and I laughed at myself when two of the characters announced they knew who did it - and I still didn't have a clue. The edition I read was unpaged (from a bundle). I can say with confidence that it was probably with fewer than 20 pages to go that I knew who it was, and that only when Dalgliesh was ready for the arrest.
It seems that in this sixth novel, P.D. James finally hit her stride. I say that having given 4-stars to four of the previous five novels in the series, so it isn't as if I thought the others weren't good. This is another 4-stars and sitting toward the top of that group. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Prisoner's Dilemma by Trenton Lee Stewart
Lexile: 900
This was a read-a-long with my children. My eight year old loved this book--she listened to the audiobook. My ten year old seems to have abandoned this series in favor of shinier fantasy (he's currently reading the Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman).
This book is very much a cartoon--both villains and helpful adults use ridiculous weapons (sharpened pencils as darts, boomerangs, etc.) and coded messages. You can just imagine the Batman scene where a villain decides that the best way to kill Batman is to tie him up under a block of ice that when it melts will drop a piano on his head. So, you just have to accept that about how these books are going to unfold.
Even so, I was a little disappointed that this book gave one of the characters actual telepathic abilities. Even for a cartoonish universe, this felt like cheating. It still involved some amount of puzzle solving since she can only really transmit images and not words, but it still felt like the author couldn't quite get the plot together.
Recommended for middle-grade readers and would be entertaining as a read-aloud. Adults should find enough here to entertain.
My eight year old has already listened to Book 4, and she's anxious for me to read it as well, so I'm sure I will soon. Unfortunately, they change narrators for Book 4, so I hope it isn't too strange. The narrator for this series has done a fine job so far.

The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle
I am positive that I read this when I was young, but that was a long time ago so this was like a brand new story! This is Conan Doyle’s second Holmes novel, originally published as a serialized version. It was even more fun than I expected. It has mystery, romance and adventure. I listened to an audio version (as part of Hoopla’s bonus borrows) that included snippets of classical music between each chapter. This was a charming addition and highlighted the serialization. I thought the reader, David Timson did a very good job, particularly distinguishing between the various characters.
This novel sets forth tropes that mystery readers will be very familiar with, and so at this point seem dated. In fact, I have to say I was a little surprised at certain ‘Golden Age mystery writers who seemed to have borrowed liberally from Conan Doyle! You have to read this keeping in mind that it is one of the progenitors. Also, there is a minor amount of racism (which fits in with the time 1890) to contend with. 5*

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
This book had crossed my line of vision a few times in a tempting way, but never quite persuaded me to pick it up. However, this task and some Amazon credit prompted me to buy the Kindle edition, and I’m so glad I did.
I loved it, although it raises more questions than it answers. Do we think what Izzy did was OK? Do we think Mia encouraging Izzy was OK? Do we think what Lexie did was OK? Do we think what Bebe did was OK? Do we think what Mia did 16 years ago was OK and the list goes on.
I haven’t said anything about the actual story here, but for me this was a book full of dilemmas that women face in life, with no easy answers.
Tea: "For now, she simply folded Bebe in her arms and took her into the kitchen, set a cup of hot tea before her, and let her cry."

The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker
A retelling of the Iliad, the story of the last couple of months in the decade-long siege of Troy, from the point of view of Briseis, the young queen of a city loyal to Troy who was captured by the Greeks and became the focus of a tug-of-war-and-honour between Achilles and Agamemnon.
It makes a great story, and it’s good to have Homer’s perspective broadened. However, despite being told mostly by Briseis, this is still fundamentally about Achilles, the war and the men. Unlike Margaret Atwood’s Penelopiad, for example, it doesn’t challenge the handed-down story, just retells it as-is from another perspective.

The Misses Mallett: The Bridge Dividing by E.H. Young
Caroline and Sophia Mallett pride themselves on once having been the flirts of their generation. Their much younger stepsister Rose is more aloof, but seems set to join them in happy spinsterhood. However, when a rejected suitor marries someone else, she perversely falls in love with him, causing complications that ripple through many lives. Then their even younger niece Henrietta joins them, increasing the complications.
I found this a fascinating portrayal of women who are not laser-focused on either marriage or a career, enjoying being their own independent people for the most part - although this does collapse a little towards the end.
Published in 1922, this book doesn't mention the war and perhaps is set just before it (but with no sense of foreboding). It feels timeless in some ways, but there are a few "motor cars" on the roads as well as carriages and carts.

Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health by William Davis 292 pages, pub. 2011
There are so many nutritional/diet books out there that it seems as if you read them all you would stop eating all food. It seems that no food is safe. This book discusses problems that wheat can cause. It is so full of details and information that you can expect it will be a rather slow read.
Recently my sister asked me about my medical health. I have a niece with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and my sister was compiling a list of all symptoms everyone in the family experienced. This started a process which for me ended with a diagnosis of Coeliac Disease. Both an RN and doctor have concurred on the diagnosis. I read this book to understand wheat more. I have been on a Diabetic Diet for 25 years. Luckily, I have accidentally avoided wheat to a large degree in an attempt to regulate blood sugar. Because of this the rare, intermittent symptoms I experienced from coeliac were not really noticed. I really resisted this diagnosis. I tend to think of Coeliac disease as that trendy disease of the moment that difficult people decide they have with little or no actual medical reason. That was probably uncharitable of me, but still there may be others who actually do that.
The Wheat Belly book was written by a physician. It is part chatty humor and part medical journal article. The doctor bounces back and forth between extensive research data, medical explanations, and chatty stories about his patients. It is a book specifically for people highly motivated to learn about the medical results of eating wheat. In the book coeliac is only one possible issue and one of the most serious. Still it made several episodes in my life make more sense. As I child I was taken to a dermatologist and given steroids for an unknown allergic reaction rash which itched so much that while I could ignore it in the day, I would scratch until I bled at night; classic coeliac. Also, as a child I had mouth ulcers and sores at the corners of my mouth. I know as an adult some of the more yucky symptoms have occurred, but again being diabetic I expect problems if I veer from my best diet.

After the Funeral by Agatha Christie
I think Christie is the best after a long hard day or after a hard read. Unfortunately, I wasn't experiencing either of these conditions when I picked this up. Her prose is fairly simple and she offers little in the way of characterization. Christie is for plot. OK, it's for plot, just go with it, I told myself.
There is the premise here that a man who for all appearances has died a natural death, may have been poisoned. Poirot is consulted. Without giving too much away, it is easy to see the premise is plausible and that Poirot will discover the culprit. There were surely enough people who had both motive and opportunity.
It isn't that I don't enjoy the few hours I spend on any Christie novel. I do. However, any 4-stars will be few and far between, and this is just a happy three.

Temporary Kings by Anthony Powell
In "Temporary Kings" Nick Jenkins is attending a literary conference in Venice around 1958. He meets Russell Gwinnett who is writing a biography of X. Trapnael, a novelist who was featured in the last book. The conference tours cultural locations, including the Bragadin Palace with its fictional impressive ceiling painted by Tiepolo. The subject of the painting, the story of Candaules and Gyges, sets the stage for other events.
Art, literature, music, film, and Eastern European politics are important in this book. Some characters are aging and declining in health. Kenneth and Pamela Widmerpool spice up the story as they engage in scandalous behavior. "Temporary Kings" is # 11 in the series, "A Dance to the Music of Time," which follows a large group of English friends and family over fifty years.
