message 1: by Winter, Group Reads (last edited Apr 01, 2020 10:29AM) (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4962 comments Hi everyone!

We now allow books the group has read for more than three years ago to be nominated again. To see which books are not eligble, see this google sheet:

It's time to nominate for May the theme is Oceans.

Please remember to state a connection to the theme when you nominate. Thank you :)

Here are some short rules for nominating books:

~ Each person can nominate 1 book.

~ Book must be available both as a physical copy and as an ebook.

~ Authors: Please do not nominate your own book.

~ Please include the name of the book and the author or link to the book.

~ Please do not nominate books that are part of a series, unless it is the first book.

~ You can second someone else's nomination, but that will count as your nomination.

~ When nominating, please state a connection to the theme.

This thread will be closed by March 26th, and we will choose ten books for the poll. If there are more than ten books nominated, we will choose the ten most nominated. If there is still a tie to get into the top ten, we'll go back to the ŷ average rating to see which is highest.

Ashleigh Motbey (ashybear02) | 1686 comments I'd like to nominate Life of Pi as at least part of this book takes place in the ocean (I've never read it nor seen the movie, but am curious)

message 3: by L Y N N (new)

L Y N N (book_music_lvr) | 2387 comments I would like to nominate Ship of Fools which occurs on board ship traveling the ocean. I read this when I was 13 and have been wanting to reread as I'm sure I missed the most pertinent parts at that young age!

Melissa W | 20 comments I would like to nominate Sea Level Rise: A Slow Tsunami on America's Shores for some non-fiction.

Ankit, you can either nominate or second a book, not both. Can you let us know which of the two you want to do and explain how the book links to the theme of Oceans?

message 10: by Brandy (new)

Brandy (brandyrn) | 6 comments I would like to nominate “A Storm Too Soon by Michael J. Tougias. It’s an amazing true story of 3 men on a 47-foot sailboat and the unexpected storm they encounter.

I second this as it’s already in my TBR folder on my Kindle

message 12: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Hayes | 23 comments I would like to suggest The Jesus Incident by Frank Herbert (it's not about Jesus although he makes a brief appearance) It takes place on the mostly water-covered planet of Pandora and is an interesting consideration of AI, interconnectedness, and social fragmentation as well as being a good sci-fi story.

And I will second Solaris

message 13: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Kohlbrenner I would like to nominate When We Believed in Mermaids! It takes place by the beach and ocean which helps the characters to heal after a trauma.

Tom, you can either nominate or second a book, not both. Do you want to nominate The Jesus Incident or will you second Solaris?

message 15: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 262 comments I'd like to nominate On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. It fits because of the author's name! I read some of his poetry last year, and have been wanting to fit this book in somewhere - it's got great reviews.

message 16: by Emmett (last edited Mar 03, 2020 08:25AM) (new)

Emmett | 2 comments The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery

non-fiction, available in ebook, audiobook, and physical copy

From Amazon: "From New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, she has befriended octopuses with strikingly different personalities—gentle Athena, assertive Octavia, curious Kali, and joyful Karma. Each creature shows her cleverness in myriad ways: escaping enclosures like an orangutan; jetting water to bounce balls; and endlessly tricking companions with multiple “sleights of hand to get food."

That's one I've been wanting to read for what seems like forever! ;)

But since I already nominated one, I can only comment in this fashion! :)

message 18: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (abookandalattee) | 3 comments The Vacationers by Emma Straub

Spend a summer with the Posts, as they head off to the Balearic island of Mallorca with their extended family and friends to celebrate Franny and Jim’s thirty-fifth wedding anniversary and Sylvia’s high school graduation. But it’s not all parties and fun secrets will come out, and old wounds will be unearthed.

I will nominate or second The Jesus Incident by Frank Herbert, to back up Tom's nomination whichever way he decides to go.

message 20: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah I would like to nominate The Siren by Kiera Cass

This is a really good book. The Ocean is a very prominent character in the book. She is the one who “employed the sirens. Without her, the whole story would not have happened.

message 21: by Steph (new)

Steph | 3 comments I am nominating The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See. I have had this one on my list for a while. It is about Korean female divers and their lives during the 1930’s and 1940’s.

message 22: by Steph (new)

I second Life of Pi!

message 27: by Harini (new)

Harini (_hpa) | 37 comments I'd like to nominate The Deepest Blue. The book is a fantasy set on a chain of islands in the middle of a vast ocean full of mysterious creatures. It has a great female lead and shows how much can be achieved when women work together even when they're discouraged from doing so.

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Tucker | 14 comments I'd like to nominate 438 Days by Jonathan Franklin - a true survival story that speaks of the partnership between humans and the sea...and other animals that inhabit the sea...and, of course of mental strength and weakness. I never read survival stories, but I can't wait to read this one again!

The whole story takes place near the ocean.

message 34: by Sara (new)

Sara (sarabelle) | 438 comments I would like to nominate Salt to the Sea because it's about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in the Baltic Sea by a Soviet submarine in the form of accurate historical fiction. The ocean is the primary setting and I've heard great things about the book.
