What should I do if some of these topics I don't have a book for (#s 25 & 50 specifically). I read every book assigned at my school and I've technically never not finished a book. I have started a few only to realize they weren't what I wanted to read right then, but I've never not finished a book really.

message 3: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) For #25 (I have a similar issue), ask around (friends or on here) about books that were assigned in their schools. Some schools read Beowulf, some didn't. Many schools read Anthem, many did not. So go with something like that.

For #50, I would go back to the books that weren't your "cup of tea" (as me and Taylor like to explain it). That or if there is a series you haven't finished or a series that has a book recently added. Since #50 is the last week, you may have a book in mind by then!!

Hope I helped Britteny :)

message 4: by Frits (new)

Frits | 6 comments Hi do i really have to stick to the weeks? Cant i just read what i want and check them when i read them?

message 5: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Hey Frits! Yes you can complete the challenge that way. Not all 52 folders are up though. I would love for everyone to stay on a similar pace (easier for discussion) but it is not required!

So for #30 I have the perfect book planned. I need to find a copy tho. I want to read THE GIRAFFE AND THE PELLY AND ME by Roald Dahl. Why it is extra cool is that I was born on his 69th birthday (Sept 13, 1985) and this book was published that year as well! (My fave of his books is Matilda which was published 3 years later--I plan to read that one for the childhood book on week 35!)

I love Roald Dahl, Britteny. I plan to read George's Marvelous Medicine for my childhood book in Week 35! It was always my favorite Roald Dahl book. It's not as popular as Charlie, Matilda, or James but it was the first Dahl book I read as a kid and it stuck.

Question about #21, Jessica or Taylor... what if your mom is not a reader. I know, I know! If we didn't constantly get told how similar we look I'd swear I was adopted. ;) What do you suggest for me?

message 8: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Michelle, I'll leave that one up to you. Aunt, grandmother, close friend, teacher, etc.

message 9: by Frits (new)

Frits | 6 comments Then I go on it my way :) but i will be reading in on others. I havent been usinggood reads much and need to change that. It is fun reading what others see in books, what they like or dislike.
will try to stay with the order in the weeks but not promising anything. Starting today in Robert Jordans wheel of time book 2 (in dutch - my language)

message 10: by misplacedselchie (new)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Frits, The Wheel of Time is so good! You'll enjoy it all :)

message 11: by Frits (new)

Frits | 6 comments i know Lora i've started them years ago! and then i had to wait for a new volume and after a couple of months i decided i couldnt do that after each book so i stopped. and waited for years and now im going to start again. i think it has been 15 years since i read the first so i dont count them as rereads :p it all has to come back to me again

message 12: by misplacedselchie (new)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments yeah when it has been so long it is like reading it for the first time again :). I think you will like Brandon Sanderson taking over. He does a good job finishing the series off.

message 13: by Stacy (new)

Stacy Harper | 1 comments I am not planning to read in order - this challenge is going to be difficult enough for me to get all 52 books in. But will add to discussion as I can and certainly will add to book recommendations! Thanks for administering this group - that's a task in itself!

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I think you're missing a prompt -- 46 should be a book by an author with your same initials, between Christmas and play. I think the numbering went a bit off at the trilogy prompt :).

message 15: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Wow you're right Angela! Thank you!

message 16: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Bruce | 1 comments I'm sooooo excited to try and get through this list. I always tend to read the same books over and over

message 17: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Heidi, I am the complete opposite! I typically despise rereading books. I usually have a difficult time find new things to read, so that's why I'm truly looking forward to this challenge. ^_^

message 18: by Mari (new)

Mari Säisä (seregi) I'm so excited (and just can't hide it ;))

message 19: by Larissa (new)

Larissa Weckesser (larissawecks) | 1 comments I already have all the books I'm going to read picked out. I can't wait till midnight on New Years so I can start reading the books for this challenge. :)

message 20: by Johanna (new)

Johanna | 31 comments I'm so excited too! I think I wil begin tomorrow because i'm afraid to not finish at time (cause of the trilogy week and also the week "a book of short stories" with "One Thousand and One Nights" for choice xD)
Can't wait to share with you this challenge =)

message 21: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Mari, are you about to lose control and you think you like it? ^_^

Larissa, you have them all picked out?? Wow! And I couldn't wait either. That's why week 1 & 2 are done for me. ^_^

message 22: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Johanna! Welcome! Go ahead and get started. Me & Taylor did :)

message 23: by Michelle, Mod Assistant (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 403 comments Mod
The trilogy week is actually three weeks, as I understand it? That would put the number of tasks at 52.

message 24: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Yes maam! I'm not sure why I numbered it the way I did. I should change that now...

message 25: by SaraFair (new)

SaraFair Ok I am such a beginner at this group thing. I am a stay at home mom to two teenagers, so I hope that I get even 1/2 of this done. But if you don't try, how will you know anything new? Sooo looking forward to seeing others suggestions, I tend to get lost in reading the same type of books and I want to change that. Thanks for this, I know its a lot of work! Also, is everyone supposed to copy the list and show what they are going to read?

message 26: by John (new)

John The hardest one for me to decide on might be 22 cause I've never actually been scared reading a book.

message 27: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
I'll have a hard time with the scary one too. When I look at the horror lists, I see a lot of Stephen King (often disturbing, but I never found it scary), some Anne Rice (Lestat will never be scary, sorry) and old books which were probably frightening for their release, but now... I'll follow the different books chosen to see if something seems interesting :)

message 28: by Saara (new)

Saara (lamiena) | 32 comments I think I shall be reading a nonfiction as my first book. It just so happens to be over 500 pages long, and I need to read it for an exam on the 16th of Jan. Then, I'll just read another nonfiction for week 14. :) I have more than plenty sitting on my shelves, crying for attention...

message 29: by Michelle, Mod Assistant (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 403 comments Mod
I don't usually get frightened from reading either so I decided to take a different approach with it and go with a book that intimidates me. I've always wanted to read Battle Royale but the gratuitous gore kind of turned me off. I'm challenging myself to get over it and read it anyway.

message 30: by Saara (new)

Saara (lamiena) | 32 comments I'm maybe thinking House of Leaves for the scary book. Can't be sure as I've never read it before, but from what I know of it I expect to be at least a little bit frightened.

message 31: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Sara wrote: "Thanks for this, I know its a lot of work! Also, is everyone supposed to copy the list and show what they are going to read?"

Welcome Sara! You don't have to copy the list, but there is a folder labeled "2015 plans" where everyone is writing down what they plan on reading. Feel free to create your own thread!

message 32: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
I was taking the road "a book that intimidates me" like Michelle, but I went to the book store for the "based entirely on its cover" book and ended up looking at Bird Box. It's a dystopia were people had to close their eyes if they go to the frightening outside. Seems enough scary and, well, it's a dystopia, who am I to resist? :p
(obviously I need another book for the cover one... tsss)

Next challenge: antonyms in the title.

message 33: by Cathrin (new)

Cathrin Antonyms? Can anyone please explain what that even is?

message 34: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
It's like black/white, love/hate, etc. So words with opposed meanings :)

message 35: by Jessy (new)

Jessy (jollybookshelf) What Zaz said!

message 36: by Luisa (last edited Dec 30, 2014 10:54AM) (new)

Luisa (deborahluisa) for antonyms in the title challenge i could think ok two book and one of them i'm not sure if it fits:

- War and Peace by Leo Tolstoi
- Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

War and Peace it way too long and i believe is a very hard reading. Lock and Key i'm not sure if it qualifies since its not really an antonym. i don't know...

I'm planning to read Lord and Lady Spy (can't remember the author at the moment--it's linked in my plan). I just googled book titles with antonyms. :-)

Britteny, here are a couple antonym titles I'm considering if you are still not sold on Sarah Dessen.

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott
Brightest Kind of Darkness by P. T. Michelle
The Distance Between Lost and Found by Kathryn Holmes

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott Brightest Kind of Darkness (Brightest Kind of Darkness, #1) by P.T. Michelle The Distance Between Lost and Found by Kathryn Holmes

I didn't have much luck with Googling titles with antonyms so these are just ones I stumbled upon in Listopia while hunting for other books.

message 40: by JackAttack (new)

JackAttack Its been awhile since I've read it but I really enjoyed Brightest Kind of Darkness. It was also a very cheap e-book when i purchased it.

Here are a few more (or more-ish, open to interpretation) I found by searching my library's catalog that weren't in the middle of a series.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
First Love, Last Rites by Ian McEwan
Hot Ice by Nora Roberts
Cold Fire by Dean Koontz
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown
My Life in Black and White by Natasha Friend
Where the Truth Lies by Jessica Warman
The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 414 comments I'll do a version of this challenge and aim to read 25 new books, wherein each book hits two categories (like it's a 500+ page book AND a Pulitzer Prize winner).

But if I finish the 25 books early, then I'll keep going to hopefully finish the whole challenge. :)

message 45: by Ireene (new)

Ireene | 36 comments For me, the most problematic topic is "a book that made/makes you cry". I don´t think any book has ever made me cry or even particulary sad. How would I even know before reading that it is that kind of book? Any suggestions? (Fault in Our Stars or similar books don´t work for me.)

message 46: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
I cry easily when I watch movies or tv shows, but it doesn't happen a lot with books. My plan is to peel some onion when reading to complete fully this week :p (ok this is the worst suggestion ever! But crying about something is so personal. You have to look to what can touch your sensitive points and find a book with it).

message 47: by Michaela (new)

Michaela (michaelaaimee) | 1 comments I have a question! I'm a participant from the Netherlands, and therefore my first language is Dutch. Even though most of the books I read are in English, I like to read the occasional Dutch detective...

If you can't tell where this is going yet, my question is: am I allowed to read books in a different language, as long as I explain in English why a book fits in that certain category?

message 48: by Jessy (new)

Yes of coure Michaela! We have a lot of members whose first language isn't English. This challenge is for you. It's so you can expand your reading tastes and experiences.

I feel a little bit out of the loop--so many people I'm noticing are reading the same book (whether for the same week or a different one) or know of the books others are reading. And then there's me over here, reading some of the strangest things, and having never even heard of a majority of the books mentioned (not including those that are mentioned from our participants who live outside the US and have access to books we don't).
But I guess that means I can share it with everyone and tell you what it's about...maybe. LOL! I'm really bad at reviewing books. It takes a lot for me not to like a book.
