This is a one book mini-challenge that must be completed in January.
Read a debut novel. (First novel by any author of your choice.)

Here's a link for some famous firsts...

As long as it's his first published novel (and not just first in the series), it's an excellent choice. What fun!

message 6: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments I'm currently reading The Sword of Shannara which as far as I'm aware is Terry Brooks debut novel.

Nice! I read that when it first came out. Good stuff!

message 8: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments My Dad did too, it's on the bookshelf at home and saw it whilst I was home for Christmas so got myself a copy, his is in need of some TLC and isn't up to me taking it places with me

Aww. Let your dad know you're reading it and maybe he'll be up for a reread. I think it's fun to Buddy with someone and compare notes. :)

Mary (mhbrown) | 1 comments I have Still Alice by Lisa Genova on my TBR list and just checked and found out that was her debut novel from back in 2006. So I will pick this book for this mini challenge and finish it by the end of January hopefully.

Are you starting or finishing, Marc?

message 12: by Karen (new)

Karen | 289 comments Would first novel count if the author has done other non-fiction or academic works before? I just read the Roxanne Gay but she was a blogger before and Sharan Newman who I believe wrote academic works before.

If the author is switching from academia or from blogging, then the debut novel is a first. I think either author sounds like a possibility.

message 14: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments I've read Dauntless by Jack Campbell and it's the first book by Jack Campbell under that pen name. He has I believe written other books under his real name. Where do I stand in terms of it being a debut novel

If he wrote fiction under another name, then it's not a debut novel for him. I thought you had decided on Sword of Shannara? Did you abandon it?

message 16: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments I've had exams this month and spent most of my time revising for them. I'm still reading that but wanted something easier to read for evenings after working all day

Inadvertently completed this with Wuthering Heights, Emily Bronte's first and only novel.

Love it when this happens!

Hooray!
Serendipity strikes again!

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments Like Holly, I too accidentally completed this mini-challenge after reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn for another challenge. I was impressed it was her first novel.

P. S. I'll leave this challenge open into Mid February for anyone who needs a little "grace" period to finish up. Sometimes life just gets in the way.

message 22: by Gareth (new)

Gareth | 166 comments I loved all 3 of Gillian Flynn's novels. I find it so hard to separate them. As a psychology student I love the how all of the main characters she creates have huge flaws in their personality. I want her to hurry up and write another novel, but I'll have to wait because she's writing another screenplay this time for Dark Places

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 800 comments Ditto Gareth, I read all 3 of her novels now and wish she could write more!

message 24: by Yocheved (new)

Yocheved Does it count if you're rereading the book?

message 25: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments I ended up reading The Magician's Lie which is my debut novel for January.

A reread is fine!! I almost did a reread of To Kill A Mockingbird or A Wrinkle In Time for this challenge. Both were fabulous, and worth reading again. And again. :)

Remember, you have a little extra time to finish this January challenge, but it will close in mid-February to make room for other minis.

message 28: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Coyle | 1557 comments Finished Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel on 2/8/15 and this was her first published novel in 1989. A little bit fantastical for me. I had a few eye roll moments on this one, but at the same time it moved along quickly.

Renee M | 4783 comments Mod
I did not realize it was her first. Cool bit of trivia.
