Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments I am interested to hear what everyone's favorite reads of 2014 were. For me, the year included lots of sci fi classics, which I listened to in audiobook format at my summer job cutting grass.

Here are my personal top 5:

1. The Book of Paul by Richard Long
2. The Postman by David Brin (audio)
3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (audio)
4. The Green Mile by Stephen King
5. Old Man's War by John Scalzi (audio)

Honorable Mention:
Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe (audio)

For Shane I would recommend pus junkies if you like gross out bizzaro horror, or maybe Fat Off Sex and Violence or Muerte Con Carne

My top 5 reads for 2014 were:

Necroscope by Brian Lumley. Just so freakin' awesome. I can't wait to read the whole series.

Murderland by Garrett Cook. Something about this bizarro book really got to me. I loved it.

Uzumaki by Junji Ito. A graphic novel, very Lovecraftian in a way, about a small Japanese town where people become obsessed by spirals and everything slowly falls apart.

Jack & Jill by Kealan Patrick Burke. I love it when an author can nail a novella and this one made my jaw drop.

The Charlie Parker series. Each book (I've read up through #6 now) has been fantastic.

Also worth noting:

~ I read Neil Gaiman's entire Sandman graphic novel series last year and it was brilliant.

~ I also read the entire Ender's Game quartet and was blown away by it. Definitely going to move onto the Ender's Shadow series soon.

~ Got 2 great classics out of the way, Song of Kali (Dan Simmons) and Harvest Home (Thomas Tryon) both of which every horror fan should be required to read!

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments Sounds like you had a great year of reading Maxine. I've gotta check out Necroscope.

Lots of people didn't like Murderland when we read it in this group so I gave it a skip. Maybe I should give it a chance.

Song of Kali is a personal favorite.

Yeah, that seems to be the thing with bizarro, sometimes you connect with it and sometimes you don't, I really found the story and premise very interesting.

You totally have to read Necroscope!

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments All the Brians of horror fiction have long been muddled together for me (Keene, Smith, Lumley). Perhaps it's time to remedy that.

Smith is a Bryan, right? That helps...

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments I'll pick up a copy of Necroscope at my next used book store trip.

Bryan Smith has a lot of good books and I have bought most of them from Amazon so they are lendable if you ever want one andy. Also, I have necroscope if you want to buddy read it sometime this year. I'm not up for it right now but let me know when you find a copy.

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments How about we nominate Necroscope for the group read next month. If not, I'm very down for a b.r.

I would actually do a reread on that one (and I rarely do rereads).
