Jessy (jollybookshelf) Writing a book review comes very natural to some and very difficult to others (like me!). Reviews can be very short, very long, or somewhere in between. Everyone has their own style of writing reviews, and that's okay. Have you ever used reviews to decide whether or not you wanted to read a book? Great! Now it's your turn to help future readers. Here are a few questions to consider/answer when writing your review:

Think about whether the book is part of a genre. Does the book fit into a type like mystery, adventure, or romance? What aspects of the genre does it use? []

What do you like or dislike about the book's writing style? Is it funny? Does it give you a sense of the place it's set? What is the author's/narrator's "voice" like? []

Make sure your review explains how you feel about the book and why, not just what the book is about. A good review should express the reviewer's opinion and persuade the reader to share it, to read the book, or to avoid reading it. []

Give your reader a taste of the plot, but don't give the surprises away. Readers want to know enough about what happens in a book to know whether they'll find it interesting. But they never want to know the ending! []

Are concepts well defined? Is the language clear and convincing? Are the ideas developed? What areas are covered, not covered? How accurate is the information? []

Could you relate to any of the characters in the story? []

Adriana Pereira (adrianacecilia) Oh this is great! I've been wanting to write more reviews for awhile now but I'm either too lazy or don't really know how to express myself. I'll try to keep these guidelines in mind the next time I write one!

Me too, actually! I've written maybe two reviews so far, but they weren't very helpful. I guess I'll have to follow my own guide!

Renee (Larimel) (goodreadscomLarimel) | 62 comments Thanks Jessica. I'm fairly new to doing reviews so I'm still trying to find my style. I'm not only trying to review more books I've read but I've started doing review videos as well. These tips might help.

Rona (ronadareader) My reviews are rather short, bland and basic.. I am not great at expressing myself either. So I really want to get better at writing them. These tips hopefully will come in handy! Thanks.

One thing which catches me is the personality in the writing. It's different to write a review like saying "the sky is blue" or to write it with enthusiasm (like) / dark humour (dislike)...
So maybe the important thing is not to explain things but how you explain them. The more you write, the more you'll find your own style. Try to have fun while writing and try to write something you'll enjoy reading ;)
