Jonathan | 6 comments So i read this book around 2006-2010, it was part of a series, i recall the main premise behind the book was that it was possible to create spirits/gods that personified specific concepts, the stronger the concept the stronger the god, however each spirit/concept could only be embodied once, making the act of passing down the surviving spirits after some ancient war a key part of each nations power.

I vaguely recall the books involved certain characters "bending" the rules to create spirits that had concepts similar in result if different in execution than the old spirits in an attempt to stop/win the war between the nations.

Ergative Absolutive | 44 comments This sounds a lot like Daniel Abraham's The Long Price Quartet: The Complete Quartet. The first book is A Shadow in Summer. The creatures are called andat, and the idea is that they can be personified through specific poetic descriptions, but each description can only be used once. So if a particular andat escapes the control of its poet, they must be described differently.

It is superb! I read it around 2014 or so and was blown away.

(He's also written an excellent quintet called The Dagger and the Coin (first one: The Dragon's Path), which I highly recommend as well.)

Jonathan | 6 comments Aha, yes! thank you, for some reason all i could think of was Tom Lloyd but he wrote the Twilight Reign series around the same year as this.

Jonathan | 6 comments Oh, sorry,
Yes, the quartet is the series i was looking for. With "A Shadow in Summer" being the first one of the four books.
