Lucy | 5 comments I'm a bit late to the game so will have to read fast to catch up! I'm really excited about this challenge, looking forward to pushing outside my comfort zone a bit,

1. A book with more than 500 pages
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
6/10
I felt it was too dragged out. I enjoyed the story but didn't connect strongly to the characters for some reason.

2. A classic romance
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
8/10
Better than I remember, but there was just so much misery! Some incredible writing though.

3. A book that became a movie
Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally
I'm taking a break from this for a little while, very intense.
Update: I finished this several months later. Harrowing but essential reading. 8/10

4. A book published this year
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
7/10
Easy, enjoyable read but nothing I would rush to read again.

5. A book with a number in the title
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
7/10
Not really my type of book given the focus on gaming, but I enjoyed reading something a bit different and I love anything alternative reality / post-apocalyptic.

6. A book written by someone under 30
Not That Kind of Girl A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned" by Lena Dunham
7/10
I admire Lena Dunham for what she's achieved and what she has done for young women and feminism, but that doesn't mean that I necessarily enjoyed her style of writing or think that we would be friends if we met!

7. A book with nonhuman characters
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
9/10 I enjoyed this so much! Unfortunately, there was a period near the end that just had too much sadness and it was a bit unpleasant to read, but other than that, this was a great book.

8. A funny book
Yes Please by Amy Poehler
7/10. I love Amy Poehler an insane amount and this was good, but I'm just not that into autobiographies.

9. A book by a female author
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
10/10. Astounding.

10. A mystery or thriller
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
9/10 Eek eek eek. I don't know how Dennis Lehane manages it but his writing is simultaneously creepy but restrained, so it's not graphic but it stays with you long after you're finished. *shudder*

11. A book with a one-word title
Joyland by Stephen King
8/10 I love a good basic Stephen King and this was great.

12. A book of short stories
Touchy Subjects Stories by Emma Donoghue
Short stories upset me a bit. I get really into the characters and the plot and then all of a sudden it's over! These were great though, a bit different to other short stories I've read and I really enjoyed them. 9/10

13. A book set in a different country
Baking Cakes in Kigali by Gaile Parkin
I'm on the fence about this one. I enjoyed reading it as it was nicely written but i kept waiting and waiting for a "problem" to arise and none really did. It wasn't massively exciting but it was fine. 6/10

14. A nonfiction book
Columbine by Dave Cullen
Very thorough account of the Columbine massacre. Psychologically intersting without sensationalising the case. 8/10

15. A popular author's first book
Secret Lives by Diane Chamberlain
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Diane Chamberlain sounds like chick lit on the surface but deals with some very complex issues. 8/10

16. A book from your favorite author that you haven't read yet
No Safe House (No Time For Goodbye, #2) by Linwood Barclay
I love Linwood Barclay! And I love that he's starting to write sequels for some of his early books. I enjoyed this a lot. 8/10

17. A book a friend recommended
The Lost Daughter by Diane Chamberlain
I wouldn't have read this if it hadn't been recommended but I really enjoyed it! 8/10

18. A Pulitzer-prize winning book
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
This was amazing. Jeffrey Eugenides has an incredible way of writing where you feel like you really know the character by the end of the book. 9/10

19. A book based on a true story
In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume
Possibly a bit of a stretch to put this in, but it was based on a number of actual plane crashes. Delighted that Judy Blume has finally released another adult book! This took a while to get into, but I enjoyed it so much. 9/10

20. A book at the bottom of your to read list
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway

21. A book your mom loves

22. A book that scares you
A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing by Eimear McBride

23. A book more than 100 years old
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs
9/10 This was fantastic. It's the first book I've read about slavery from the perspective of a slave.

24. A book based entirely on its cover

25. A book you were supposed to read in school but didn't
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys
Think I'd need to attend a book club on this or do a little more research into it to fully understand and enjoy it! 6/10

26. A memoir
Bossypants by Tina Fey
Again, not really into autobiographies but this was funny and enjoyable. 6/10

27. A book you can finish in a day
The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan
Ian McEwan is so strange. This has a lovely flow of prose but I found it hard to connect with any of the characters or really care about what happened in the end. 6/10

28. A book with antonyms in the title

29. A book set somewhere you've always wanted to visit
Burial Rites by Hannah Kent
Set in Iceland
7/10 I thought this was brilliantly written; I could almost feel how cold it was there and it's just made me more determined to visit!

30. A book that came out the year you were born
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
5/10 This was a bit crazy and I didn't enjoy it very much. i didn't connect with any of the characters and it wasn't for me.

31. A book with bad reviews
Wideacre (The Wideacre Trilogy, #1) by Philippa Gregory
God this was fairly awful. The main character is horrendously unlikable and I rushed to the end just for the sake of finishing it! Can't believe this is the same author as her Tudor novels. 4/10

32. A trilogy (the first)
Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver
9/10 I LOVED this series! Fantastic idea for a set of novels and I read them all in a very short space of time.

33. A trilogy (the second)
Pandemonium (Delirium, #2) by Lauren Oliver
9/10 As above

34. A trilogy (the third)
Requiem (Delirium, #3) by Lauren Oliver
9/10 As above

35. A book from your childhood
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
It's hard to go back to books you loved when you were little. This was so much shorter than I remembered and I didn't connect with the characters in the same way. Brought back some nice memories though! 6/10

36. A book with a love triangle

37. A book set in the future

38. A book set in high school
The Face on the Milk Carton (Janie Johnson, #1) by Caroline B. Cooney
I love young adult books. This wasn't great but it was enjoyable enough. 6/10

39. A book with a color in the title
The Color Purple by Alice Walker

40. A book that made/makes you cry
The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

41. A book with magic

42. A graphic novel

43. A book by an author you've never read before

44. A book you own but have never read

45. A book that takes place in your hometown
Nora Webster by Colm Tóibín
Not quite in my hometown, but there's very few set there so I took some creative license with this. I <3 Colm Tóibín. That is all. 9/10

46. A book that was originally written in another language
The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker
8/10 I read this for book club and really enjoyed it.

47. A book set during Christmas (or similar holiday)

48. A book written by an author with your same initials

49. A play
A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen

50. A banned book
Forever by Judy Blume
9/10 I would have enjoyed and appreciated reading this book as a teenager.

51. A book based on OR turned into a tv show
Orange Is the New Black by Piper Kerman
I love the show and also enjoyed reading this. 7/10

52. A book you started but never finished
The Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer

Jessy (jollybookshelf) Welcome Lucy!

Marina H | 272 comments I'll be reading The Color Purple in week 39 also. I don't know how but somehow I've managed to never read nor see the movie. And it just seem to be one those books you should read at least once.

message 4: by Kirsty (new)

Kirsty I loved The Color Purple but I haven't read it since secondary school (or High School if you're american) how are you finding it?

message 5: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 5 comments I'm a bit of a stickler for lists so I'm reading this in order! I've had The Color Purple on my kindle for ages and never got round to reading it, so it's good to have a reason now. What are you reading for 500+ pages? I found it really hard to find one I hadn't already read!

message 6: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 272 comments I read The Grapes of Wrath the first week, and I think I could easily find other 500+ pages books to read. My problem sometimes is to find books with fewer pages. If I'm going to complete this challenge the books can't be too long every week.

I'm going to read Schindler's list as the book based on a true story. Have you read it before or seen the film?

message 7: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 5 comments No, but I've set it for book 3! (A book turned into a film) I'm really excited about reading it. I read the Grapes of Wrath a few years ago, it's amazing. What are you reading at the moment? I've tried not to fill in too many of the books in advance unless they're books I really want to read, in case I come across a different one in the meantime that I want to read more and I don't want to go back and change the list.

message 8: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 272 comments I've just finished Pride and Prejudice, and later today I'll start reading Chocolat. That's my choice for week 3.

I've found a book for almost every week, but I'm pretty sure I'll make changes. I always find new ideas for books when I see what others have chosen!

message 9: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 5 comments Pride and Prejudice <3

Thanks for the comments, keep checking back to see my updated list and let me know if you come across anything unexpectedly amazing!

Erika Quinonez | 18 comments Hi Lucy,
I like your choice for week 1. I'm still searching around for something to add to my list for that week. I like the plot of the book you chose. Have you read it before? This is my first time hearing of it.

message 11: by Lucy (new)

Lucy | 5 comments Hi Erika,
I've never read any of the books on my list, that is what makes this challenge so exciting. If i were filling out the list according to books I've read before, it would be no problem! All The Light We Cannot See was published quite recently, so I didn't have a chance to read it until now. I'm really really enjoying it though! There are lots of options, depending on what you like. Have a look through the other groups on this page for some ideas!

Erika Quinonez | 18 comments I love that, I'm doing the same thing, reading books I haven't read or books I started but never finished. I read up a little bit on All The Light We Cannot See and I'm considering this one for my week 1. But I'll still keep looking around.
Thanks :)
