How do you decide what age-range a book is recommended for?

I noticed that there was a range of opinions on this in the On the Horizon discussion, with many feeling it was too intense for children while I felt comfortable handing it to my 8yo.

I have just finished the book Fighting Words. According to the author, it is written for ten year olds, but I can imagine a lot of people disagreeing with that.

How do make a decision about which age group to recommend a book to?

The publisher mostly makes the decision. Bookstores will shelve it where the publisher directs (for the most part). Beginner, middle grade, young adult. Many booksellers will get the advance copies of the title and read them before the release date. Most of us through education and experience can determine what age group is truly most appropriate. It isn't always easy. Books today deal with topics and situations rarely written or discussed even a decade ago.

A good rule of thumb for children's books is the age of the main character. If there is disturbing content and you are recommending it for a child that is not your own, be on the safe side and raise the age. Parents are the best people to know what their child is ready for or not ready for.
