As a group we are reading An American Tragedy for the rest of October through mid-December. I thought we could have another shorter read for those who don't want to read AAT. Of course, if you want to read both, you are more than welcome to. I ask that we keep the book under 500 pages, preferably under 400 pages. And as always, please only nominate books that are classics at least 50 years old.

I will keep this nomination thread open for a week, and then post the poll next weekend.

Amle | 28 comments As I can't get my hands on An American Tragedy, I'm going to have to look forward to next month. Most of the books I'm aching to read are on the longer side, but I do have The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux on my TBR and it's only 360 pages.

Some ideas for the shorter read.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote
Mrs Dalloway - Virginia Woolf
One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich - Solzhenitsyn
The Old Man and the Sea - Papa
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde
The Catcher in the Rye - Salinger
Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth
Rabbit, Run - Updike

Armin (hellishome01) Although AAT is my main course for the next 2 months I would join a Solzhenitsyn-Reading. Read Ivan Denisovich more than 40 years ago.

I would also try to join in reading this. Of all books named so far in this discussion it is the only one I have not read.

3. Melody of a Tear/ Haroon Khalid Akhtar
4. A Fine Balance/ Rohinton Mistry

Looking forward to the book selection and discussion.

These are great suggestions (I'd like to read all of them), but none of them meet the requirement that they be at least 50 years old. At least two of them will likely be considered classics someday, but they're still a bit young for this group. Personally, I thank you for the nudge on Achebe: there's a lot more from him I need to read!

Yulianna | 1 comments A few more books on the shorter side :
- The Foundation Pit by Andrei Platonov
- R.U.R. by Karel ÄŒapek
- How Green Was My Valley by Richard Llewellyn

Otherwise, I will definitely be looking forward to rereading "The Picture of Dorian Gray" or "One Day In the Life of Ivan Denisovich"!

Poll is up!

Sorry I didn't do it over the weekend. I was waiting to see more input on the suggestions to narrow it down.

The Picture of Dorian Gray won the polls. Brian will be leading the discussion for this book, and he will have a reading schedule out soon. Thanks for voting!
