Daniel Varian | 3 comments Hello,

I've just completed the first draft of the first act of my first book (lots of firsts) and I'm looking for a Beta Reader who will join me for the next few years as I plough on through the series of four books. Working in acts as apposed to completed works so I can apply the feedback as I go.

The Daytime Void is set in England a few years from now, in the wake of another Lockdown. It's a commentary on medical politics, the unique ways we survive trauma and Dissociative Identity Disorder (a condition I have), as well as how we bond together during times of crisis. I described the series as genre bent because it jumps between psychological thriller, urban comedy, science fiction, LGBTQ romance, speculative fiction and social commentary.

I would like the Beta to have experience reading work with challenging/problematic content, be comfortable reading 18+ LGBTQ erotic content and be willing just to see where it goes. I have to take my time with it because the pandemic in the book actually happened and now I have to pay a lot of attention to present events. There may be gaps of 6 months between acts. I would appreciate a reader who is sensitive to addiction, mental illness, the ongoing COVID pandemic, survivors and the villains.

My aim is to represent my condition and the lives of those close to me as accurately as I can while keeping it relatable, making people laugh and encouraging empathy/thought/questioning.

I plan to hybridise it with a characters sketchbook later on so there will be illustrations, but right now, I just want feedback from someone who doesn't know me/my world, doesn't know the plot of the book, to answer the question 'would you continue reading and why?' amongst others.

Thank you!

Fanna (fannaforbooks) | 102 comments Hey, Daniel!

I've read various genre-bent series and I'm particularly appreciative of the thrilling, romantic, and speculative undertones. Of the various themes I prefer to see infused in a narrative; politics, social commentary, and mental health are certainly high on the list.

I'm absolutely comfortable reading LGBTQ+ romance and flexible enough to be a long-term beta reader, especially since I already have and am working with writers on a frequent check-in basis. I think I'd be a great beta reader for this manuscript.

Considering the specific pointers you're hoping to receive in the feedback, I would suggest my overall, general feedback that costs according to a base price of $1/1K words. You can expect a comprehensive and honest feedback from me as an experienced beta reader.

Expected turnaround time for such a word count would be one week. You can read more about the feedback being offered and other details of the service here.

If you wish to place an order, simply fill out this and I'll reply with a confirmation or if you have a query, just send an email to [email protected] Looking forward to working with you!

Ackash Kumar (adkthehurricane) | 40 comments Hi! I would love to read your first act as I too feel EXTREMELY exhausted from this pandemic and need some reading material to embody that haha (*dies*). All of the genre bending warms my soul as my books also genre bend between speculative fiction to self help to young adult and other genres depending on the book.

As for payment rates, I've decided to make my rates as affordable as humanly possible. There can be bargains to decrease prices if I see necessary, and there will be fluctuations if additional reviewing is required. The following is my set of rates (all prices are in USD):
- First chapter = $1 (if the first chapter is a prologue, then add the chapter after it and it will be $1.50)
- 2-4 chapters = $3
- 5-7 chapters = $5
- 20000 words to 35000 words = $10
- 35001 words to 50000 words = $15
- 50001 words to 65000 words = $20
- 65001 words to 80000 words = $25
- anything higher may be considered depending on how much college work/beta reading work I have
- anything in the middle of 7 chapters and 20,000 words will be bargained for

Do email me at [email protected] if you would like. or dm me on here <3 I think if you want someone to work with you for a long term project of this nature, I would be EXTREMELY honoured as I, too, have a long term project that I'm working on and might need some critique for it too hehe

Christopher (chrisrow83) | 78 comments Hi Daniel,
The more I read your post the more I liked. I've read mostly scifi and spec fic novels, but in most recent years, I've stuck almost exclusively to romance (vast majority queer). I'm queer myself and also mentally ill. I've marched through several diagnoses and so I take a constant interest in mental illness, and by coincidence have recently started following a few people with DID. Also, I've struggled with prescription medication so I certainly sympathize with addicts. I could go on, but I won't. My own books are all themed of "problematic" subjects, or what I like to just call "taboo"; everything from drugs, to violence, to lgbtq issues, etc. As for goodies and baddies, everyone is the good guy in their own heads, right? I absolutely love an intriguing bad guy.

Message me or contact me through my website.

Daniel Varian | 3 comments Thank you for the interest everyone! I wasn't expecting it and I appreciate it. I will be looking through everyone's sites and drawing up a list. I have about eleven friends reading through it at the moment under a contract and have a budget for multiple betas set aside. More the merrier I think as I would like to have as broad a review as possible. This makes it easier for me to establish what works and what doesn't across an audience as apposed to one or two betas.
I will hope to get back to people over the week but I am working 40 hours 5am starts with a five year old upon my return, so I'm fairly dead right now.

I suppose the only thing I would add at this point is, I don't feel comfortable submitting the manuscript to anyone under the age of 18 given the content right from the outset. It's also Very Personal, and as my situation changes/processing of events evolves, so will the text and my relationship to it. I aim to be professional with all Beta's but writing about my condition is a tricky thing *points to amnesia sitting in the corner*. I may forget quite a bit, change perspective rapidly or discover things I am not ready for which may require a major rework. None of this is said to scare anyone off, just simply, it may not be straightforward in the writing or editing process, and in working with me on the book, you'll also be at ground zero in my brain as I process a lot with my system.
I won't talk about my system outside of book setting unless we get on well, I'm nervous even discussing it but trying to get used to being open so I can get proper dialogues going on the book.

Thank you again for all your interest,
I hope lockdown ain't got you bad,
Daniel
