Says there is a rise in cross-posting, perhaps it should be in the rules/directions?

TNTpuplover | 4 comments My thread was closed after I was about to confirm it solved because I was helping a user from another social media platform with a book search.

I wouldn’t have even spent my time making the request if I had known that cross posting wasn’t allowed (which I don’t quite understand why it’s not allowed, could someone please explain?)

It would be helpful to add no cross-posting into the rules since it seems to be a prevalent issue.

SamSpayedPI | 2299 comments I agree I don't see it anywhere in the Group Rules, unless you can say it's a violation of the "Can't remember the title of a book you read?" premise. But we do allow people to post for friends and relatives, or librarians to post for patrons.

The language we normally use is:

Sorry but we don't allow cross-posting from other social media sites. There's been a rise in requests appearing in the group that were generated on sites like Facebook. Our group is not intended to be a clearinghouse for every book request. Rather, the purpose of the group is to help you locate a book that YOU read and then forgot.

I think that explains it well - a few years ago there was suddenly a flurry of requests that were cross-posted; we would sometimes see 3-4 identical requests in one day, and once we googled their phrases, we figured out they were originating on Facebook and similar social media sites. Once this started happening, it continued to happen on a fairly regular basis, so we decided to shut it down.

If there are several identical requests appearing here in a short period of time, all generated from some other site, it's a waste of our searchers' resources. Not every member here reads every thread every day, so you might have several people looking for Request #1, several other people looking for Request #2, even more people looking for Request #3, none of them realizing these were duplicate requests. That's a lot of time and effort expended on behalf of someone who isn't even a member of our group - they're someone over on Facebook or a similar site.

Additionally, if all these duplicate threads are solved, mods might waste time shelving the book multiple times. It's a bad use of moderator resources as well.

"Our group is not intended to be a clearinghouse for every book request."

Amber (Daisymau) (daisymau) | 1872 comments Even if this was posted in the rules, how many people actually read the rules before posting?

PaulGamerBoy360 I found a post on a different site that was posted years ago, I was genuinely interested in the book, so about a week ago I posted the request in the Unsoved folder here.

Is that ok? Because:

1. I'm genuinely interested in it

2. It is many years old

3. I could not find a similar request in this group

4. The original request on the other site had no answers.

PaulGamerBoy360 And since cross-posting is not listed in the rules as a violation, Mods who close threads due to cross-posting don't have the rule to support themselves.

PaulGamerBoy360 I understand about there being many all at once from other social media sites, But if you are interested you should be allowed to put it on here.(id say maybe a week after original posting with no answers)

No, it's not. We don't allow cross-posting for all the reasons enumerated above.

A query you post in the group should be a book that YOU read. The most basic reason for this is that YOU will be able to recognize the correct book when someone suggests it. If you've copied someone's forgotten book request from another site, you don't have their memories of the book. How will you know when the correct book is suggested?

PaulGamerBoy360 The thread on the other site has been inactive for many years, so it should not be considered cross-posting.
