Starting now or tomorrow we can begin nominating quarterly reads for 2021. Use this topic thread to do so. After we gather nominations then we will vote. Please try to choose books that are between 601 to 900 pages. If you want to nominate a book between 901 and 999 you can do so. I am just trying to save the longer ones for annual reads. Diane | 2044 comments Kristel's reply gave me license to create a long list. Unfortunately, there are far too many books I have left in this page-range despite my progress into the list. I will be thrilled to knock another 4 of these off through quarterly reads. I plan to read at least 20 of these next year, anyway. Here are my nominees:

On Diane's list I have or am interested in

The Man Who Loved Children (Stead) - on Audible
The Glass Bead Game (Hesse) - on Audible
The Devils (Dostoyevsky) - on Librivox as "The Possessed"
The Children's Book (Byatt) - on Audible
The First Circle (Solzhenitsyn) - on Audible
Gravity's Rainbow (Pynchon) - on Audible
Underworld (DeLillo) - on Audible

message 4: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 554 comments From the above list I have or could find online:

Quo Vadis (Sienkiewicz)
The Tin Drum (Grass)
The Mysteries of Udolpho (Radcliffe)
The World According to Garp (Irving)
Julie, or the New Heloise (Rousseau)
The First Circle (Solzhenitsyn)
Peregrine Pickle (Smollett)
Emile, on Education (Rousseau)
Parade's End (Ford)
Underworld (DeLillo)

Actually most of these are on my TBR Takedown shelf at the moment, so I won't know till the end of November which of these will carry over unread into 2021, but obviously only one of them could possibly be chosen for December's TBR.

Is there a handy version of the 1001 List that shows official page numbers? I'm sure some of the other books I want to read next year are in that size range, but if there is a list with page counts on our group somewhere I am not finding it yet today. Thanks!

message 5: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 852 comments Of Diane's list, I am most interested in:

Fingersmith
Mason & Dixon (I have a like(?)/puzzled relationship with Pynchon - maybe this one will tip the scales!)
The World According to Garp

I really enjoyed:
The Engineer of Human Souls

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 554 comments Here are the books in the >600pp range that I have not read yet and would like to get to in 2021. Since I went with the page counts from the editions on the Listopia list, I included some that on that list are less than 600pp, since they probably have longer editions too.

Gargantua and Pantagruel - Rabelais, François 1,041 pp
Gone with the Wind - Mitchell, Margaret 1,037 pp
Camilla - Burney, Frances 992 pp
The Making of Americans - Stein, Gertrude 926 pp
The Last Chronicle of Barset - Trollope, Anthony 890 pp
Vanity Fair - Thackeray, William Makepeace 867 pp
Castle Richmond - Trollope, Anthony 837 pp
Parade's End - Ford, Ford Madox 836 pp
Martin Chuzzlewit - Dickens, Charles 830 pp was a QR in 2014
Underworld - DeLillo, Don 827 pp
The Goldfinch - Tartt, Donna 771 pp
Cloudsplitter- Banks, Russell 758 pp was a QR in 2016
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman - Sterne, Laurence 735 pp
Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family - Mann, Thomas 731 pp
Julie, or the New Heloise - Rousseau, Jean-Jacques 728 pp
House of Leaves - Danielewski, Mark Z. 705 pp was a QR in 2016
Of Human Bondage - Maugham, W. Somerset 684 pp
Fall on Your Knees - MacDonald, Ann-Marie 672 pp
The Mysteries of Udolpho - Radcliffe, Ann 654 pp
The Corrections - Franzen, Jonathan 653 pp
Midnight's Children - Rushdie, Salman 647 pp
Look Homeward, Angel - Wolfe, Thomas 644 pp
Finnegans Wake - Joyce, James 628 pp
Shirley - Brontë, Charlotte 624 pp
Adam Bede - Eliot, George 624 pp
Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ - Wallace, Lew 620 pp

Amanda Dawn | 1669 comments Since we're being pretty liberal with the nominations, here are the ones I own in book or audio that I would most want to vote for:

The Good Soldier Å vejk
Gravity's Rainbow
Ulysses
Daniel Deronda
Martin Chuzzlewit
Forsyte Saga
The Swarm
The Mandarins

As usual, I always have a look on what lies on my TBR shelf before nominating or voting. Here are my candidates this year:

Metamorphoses (Ovid)
The Betrothed (Manzoni)
Indian Summer (Stifter)
The Woman in White (Collins; I recall this was a quarterly around 2012 maybe)
Finnegans Wake (Joyce; we did Ulysses around 2015, only a few of us survived :) )
The Glass-Bead Game (Hesse; might not qualify but has 637 pages in French)
The Children's Book (Byatt; don't throw any bricks, please; it has to be done and been on my TBR since 2011)

message 9: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 852 comments I have the The Good Soldier Å vejk on my 2020 Randomizer list, and don't think I will get to it before year's end. I would like to read this.

I have The Woman in White in the giant, tottering pile of owned books. It's always good to read one from the RL pile.

My nominations (from my shelves)
1. House of Leaves (past quarterly read, I failed)
2. Underworld
3. The Adventures of Caleb Williams; Or, Things as They Are
4. Melmoth the Wanderer (tho would like to read that one this year)
5 Adventures and misadventures of Maqroll

message 11: by George P. (last edited Nov 02, 2020 08:11PM) (new)

George P. | 701 comments I will second Life: A User's Manual (Perec) and The Discovery of Heaven (Mulisch) I already have copies and was planning to read them in the next couple months.

I would also second The Glass Bead Game, if this is allowed, but it is evidently a bit shorter than 600 pages. Maybe close enough we could allow it?
I also want to read Buddenbrooks.

11/02: So I'll stick with The Discovery of Heaven and Buddenbrooks with the other 2 being too short to qualify. I'd also like to read The Magic Mountain and The Idiot.
I'm planning to start The Savage Detectives in a few weeks if anyone wants to talk to me about it.

message 19: by Diane (new)

Diane | 2044 comments If you have all of the 1001 books in your Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ TBR together on one shelf, an easy way to get pages counts is to add "number of pages" to your shelf settings. You can also order them from high to low or low to high.

Nominations will close on 11/24/2020 and voting will commense after that. Voting will go from 11/24 to 11/30. Six days? Is that long enough?

Do you want to vote for all 4 books or would you like the randomizer to pick one book from all the nominations? That way every book has at least one opportunity to be a quarterly read. Let me know your thoughts.

message 21: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Robitaille | 1556 comments Mod
3 votes plus one random sounds fair. 6 days is enough for voting.

message 23: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2125 comments Ditto

The word ditto comes from the Tuscan language, where it is the past participle of the verb dire (to say), with the meaning of "said", as in the locution "the said story". The first recorded use of ditto with this meaning in English occurs in 1625.

I love words.....

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 560 comments I fully plan to read the following next year:

Midnight's Children
The Once and Future King
Adam Bede
The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman

But I have fully planned to read them for a couple of years, so it would be great if they were quarterly reads to help me actually get to them. lol
