This is the question that Julian Jessop, an eccentric, seventy-nine-year-old artist, poses within a pale green exercise book that he labels The Authenticity Project, before leaving it behind in Monica's Café. When Monica discovers Julian's abandoned notebook, not only does she add her own story to the book, she is determined to find a way to help Julian feel less lonely."

And it goes on from there, as the book finds its way to other people. This is one of those feel good stories that turns quirky or lonely strangers into friends. (Think - A Man Called Ove.) Some of the situations are too contrived, but there are many moments that feel painfully honest and realistic. Julian is the most memorable character, with colorful stories that might (or might not) be true.

This book has a lot of heart and good intentions. Sometimes I really need to read a feel good story like this to give me hope for the human race. The author has some interesting things to say about human nature, secrecy v openness, taking risks, friendship, and the choices people make in life.

3.5/5
