knight and squire

A plague has past through Novel Kingdom, on the edge of Lake Lexicon. The heroes who were previously keeping the kingdom safe from monsters have been particularly badly hit and Queen Skye has put out a call for new heroes to come and maintain the safety of the kingdom.

In recognition of the fact that the kingdom is in a perilous state with all the new monsters, she is planning to pair experienced adventurers with the newcomers to help them find their way around the kingdom while they settle in.

How to take part
Post below saying whether you are a newcomer to the kingdom or an experienced hero. We will pair you up to complete the tasks together. Both of you will receive the same rewards from completions.

Tasks
1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
7. Together spell out one of NOVEL, ROLE, PLAY, GAME using standard spell out rules
8. Visit the melting pot and suggest a quest idea that you have worked on together
9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)
10. Both partners read a book that involves a teacher or student, or that has a link to a video game (i.e. Ready Player One or The Last Wish). It does not have to be the same book. The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.

Rewards
These are additive (i.e when you complete hard, in total you will have 23 XP, 10 gold and a major heal potion).

Tutorial: Complete 2 tasks for 2XP
Easy: Complete 4 tasks for 4XP
Intermediate: Complete 7 tasks for 7XP and 10 gold
Hard: Complete 10 tasks for 10 XP and a major heal potion

Stephanie | 286 comments Hi I just saw this buddy thread. I am so excited to get start I have started my thread already. From the welcome basket I used two of the books from this previous year to level up both the sword and the staff once. I am a very fast reader so we may be done fairly quick.

Hi Stephanie! Excellent start :) Levelling up weapons is important - I focus on the staff, as I read a lot of series, and there are plenty of longer series that you don't necessarily need to read in order, but the sword is doable, especially with the Glue quest to join books together, so don't fret if you aren't a series reader!

I'd suggest that you get one of your weapons to level 3 quickly, so that you can kill the Sewer Rats in one go - which is super satsifying, let me tell you!

One of the key things at the start of the game is to time your level ups cleverly, to take advantage of the free HP boost when you do so. So first advice would be to do some quests to get to 3XP, have a weapon at level 3 and then smite a Sewer Rat in one fell swoop, followed by a Goblin, which will take two hits and cause you harm, but you'll heal with the level up :)

One easy way to get 3XP is to to the "Hello, my name is..." quest - introduce yourself in the Tavern (if you've not already!) The other quests can be found here

From a logistics point of view I find it easiest to do my actions on a Sunday, as that's when the weekly monsters respawn, and it keeps things straighter in my head. So, I'd say you've a couple of days to prep for some monster fighting on Sunday!

Just had a look in your log -looking good, but I'd suggest you include a note of your current and max HP. Not essential for the lower levels, but later on it really helps.

Like: Hero: Level 1; Health 10/10HP etc

Stephanie | 286 comments Sounds great I'll add that in.

Stephanie | 286 comments What word would you like to spell out?

Cat (cat_uk) | 9742 comments Mod
one of the four letter ones? I've no particular preference :)

Typically the books I've in mind to read in the next week or so don't obviously have any of the letters! But I could pick up an A so let's narrow down to either GAME or PLAY? You pick the word and your preferred letters (giving me the A!) and I'll work with whatever's left? I have a LOT of books so it won't be a problem!

Stephanie | 286 comments Alright, I'll pick GAME. I'll take M and E if you are good with G.

Stephanie | 286 comments Ok following your advice I killed a rat and a goblin. Now I am level 2 and feel great!

What kind of quest should we put in the melting pot?

I wondered about one acknowledging recent deaths in the literary world - le Carre (fun spy quest possible?) or Rachel Caine (vampires? weather? Great Library? - lots of possibilities with her!) ??

message 15: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 286 comments I love Rachel Caine! So many possibilities how do we decided what to do?

Hi Stephanie, sorry for the silence - Christmas in my support bubble distracted me! Hope you had a good holiday period :)

Re our quest idea, we could have a task for each of her main series? Like :
Read a book with a weather word in the title (for Weather Warden series)

Happy New Year Stephanie! Hope you had a lovely time over the holidays - I was lucky enough to be with my family, so had lots of fun with my nephew & niece, and if not entirely rested (running around after them) I'm definitely recharged and ready for 2021!

so.... more ideas for the Rachel Caine quest:

for Stillhouse Lake: how about a body of water on the cover?
Vampires could be as straightforward as Vampire MPG?
Great Library: book with BOOK in the title? GREAT in the title (letters of or actual word?) or alternative history tag on the first page of shelves?

Finished The Secret Runners of New York - features students

Stephanie | 286 comments Sorry for disappearing for a bit but I'm back and ready to finish. Glad you had a good holiday with your family.

Weather warden - book with a weather word in the title
The Morganville vampires - Vampire MPG
Stillhouse Lake - Body of water on the cover
The Great Library - book with book in the title
Outcast season - mc is an outcast

I like it do you want to post it into the Melting pot?

I started The Last Wish and will have it finished in the next day or two. (task 10)
