Teodora Paslaru (teodorapaslaru) | 245 comments Khaled Hosseini's writing is as beautiful as ever, but this story didn't engage me the way the others did. There were too many characters, too many points of view, and some of them were only distantly related to the main story.

Taken together, these storylines did paint a complex picture, with the common theme that the human being is flawed. Ia also learned a lot about the history of Afghanistan and the people from this country that now live all over the world. Taken individually, I can't deny that each storyline had its beauty, its life lesson.

The problem was that as soon as I started to be engaged by a character, the story would move to another. While I read about a character, it was engaging, but I had to force myself to move forward each time the point of view changed.

This doesn't mean the story wasn't good. After all, I've rated this book four stars. But if I compare it with The Kite Runner or with A Thousand Splendid Suns, which is one of my all-time favorites, this book wasn't at the same level. But if this would've been the first book by this author I would've read, I would continue with his other work. So, in the end, I think this was a book worth reading, just not as good compared to what the author is capable of.
