Use this Topic to discuss books you’re reading or that fit the 10th Scavenger Hunt task.

To B, or not to B, that is the question;
Seek ye the answer in the Boxall Bookshelf.

Nocturnalux | 465 comments I have question, can Clarice Lispector be used for this task? She was born in the Ukraine but went to Brazil at the age of two months old and wore extensively in Portuguese. Technically, Brazil is not her country of birth, though.

Ultimately it's your challenge. You can make the rules. Also, I am all about being creative. I would say that perhaps her personality, her being, her essence was born in Brazil.

Ivo Andrić was born in Bosnia. I read Bridge on the Drina. Also, Bosnian Trilogy is high on my TBR list.

James Spencer (jspencer78) | 243 comments Boy this one is going to be tough. I've already read Bridge on the Drina so I may have to go with the Clarice Lispector "cheat." There are not even that many countries that work.

message 8: by Nocturnalux (new)

Nocturnalux | 465 comments I was trying to an all-women's challenge for this one but I don't think it'll happen. Even I go with Lispector for this one, I will still have to slide in one or two male authors here and there.

If you want a short read you can use Fear and Trembling by Amélie Nothomb. She was born in Belgium even though she says she was born in Japan (cheating in a different way I guess). Cheese by Willem Elsschot is also a quickread.
Or you could use A Ballad for Georg Henig by Viktor Paskov. It's a beautiful story; I believe it is hard to find though.

James Spencer (jspencer78) | 243 comments Found one which I didn't know about before: The Lion of Flanders by Hendrik Conscience!

message 11: by Nocturnalux (new)

Nocturnalux | 465 comments For those who, like me, want more women in their Scavenger Hunt, there is always Memoirs of Hadrian from Marguerite Yourcenar who was born in Belgium.

LOL, that cracked me up! =)

As for more B country options, the list has a few Brazilian authors: Jorge Amado, João Guimarães Rosa, Machado de Assis.

Maria | 38 comments For this part of the challenge I’m reading «Veronika Decides to Die» by Paulo Coelho.

Irem A | 60 comments Is Britain Britain or is it England? :D Options seem to be Brazil or Belgium.

I read Bridge on Drinks, don't want to go for another Andric. I also read Selimovic Dervish (loved it!).

so hmm what are the options here apart of Brazil?

Shereen | 77 comments Irem wrote: "Is Britain Britain or is it England? :D Options seem to be Brazil or Belgium. "

Sorry Britain isn’t a country! (Although it would make the challenge easier if it was).

You also have Bosnia and Bulgaria.

message 20: by Irem (new)

Irem A | 60 comments Bulgaria was a great tip! The Green Hat is the winner then to cross both color item and this one. THank youuuu

message 21: by SaraSian (new)

SaraSian | 76 comments Also using the Clarice Lispector cheat (I’m sure she would identify as Brazilian) and I read The Hour of the Star. It was amazing!

message 23: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 105 comments I chose Bosnian Chronicle by Ivo Andrić.

She actually did identify as Brazilian several times, in writing on interviews and the like.

Yrinsyde | 287 comments I picked up Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho, who is a Brazilian.

message 26: by Maddy (new)

Maddy | 86 comments I think this was the hardest one to find a book for!

I am also reading The Hour of the Star

message 27: by James (new)

James Spencer (jspencer78) | 243 comments I read the Lion of Flanders written by Hendrix Conscience from Belgium but wish I had chosen something by Coelho or Lispector.

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 640 comments The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano

I know where he was born is modern day Nigeria, but hear me out. At the time he was born and for more than a hundred years after the place he was born was called the Kingdom of Benin, not to be confused with the modern day country. So, for centuries the place of his birth was Benin and only for a century and a half has it been part of Nigeria. By the weight of years I believe it qualifies and I rest my case.

I'm nearing the end of my "B" country book, Under the Yoke/ Pod Igoto: A Romance of Bulgarian Liberty by Ivan Vazov. It's a rather obscure one. That's the 11th of my 12 Scavenger Hunt books, and I've started the 12th today.
Actually, strangely perhaps, this is the third book I've read by a Bulgarian, the others being Auto-da-Fe by Canetti and A Ballad for Georg Henig by Paskov, both 1001 list books. The short Paskov book was the most moving, Auto-da-Fe the weirdest.
