Summer TBR Challenge 2021-- Rules and Questions

The Last Enchantment-an Arthurian story-it is HF and also Fantasy on the Main Page

You can join any challenge that we currently have going. You don't need to wait for a new one to start. :)

I have a number of books that are downloaded to my Kindle or my computer (to transfer to the Kindle) but which I never shelved in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I also have boxes under my coffee table with books that I bought at library sales, street fairs, or used book stores over the years but also never shelved.
Would it be acceptable for this challenge if I created new shelves before June 1st: "unread on Kindle" and "unread books in boxes" and used those in addition to the To-Read shelf? Or is this limited to what was on a TBR shelf at the time the challenge description was posted?
I do realize that I wouldn't get any Date Added points for anything on shelves created this month.
You can create a new shelf or you don’t even have to do that. As long as you put the books on your list they count and like you said you just won’t get the added bonus points

New questions: If the most popular edition is Kindle or ebooks, is that page count still used, or does it default to the most popular paper edition? (In another challenge group that I participate in, the rule is to always use the paper page count because it may change in ebooks/Kindle depending on how the reader sets the font size.)
If the book page on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ doesn't have a page count for any editions, is there any way to verify if it fits? (Betrayal: Historical Stories)

The most popular edition is typically the one that shows up when you select a book. It doesn't matter if it's e-book or paper.

I've never had a situation where goodreads didn't have a page count. That is a first for me. In that instance, since there is an Amazon link, click on that and use the page count it provides as your page count.

Sounds good!
I also posted in the Librarian's Group to see if they can add the page count from Amazon.

You can work your challenge however you want.

What is the total number of books that can be read from the Mod list 3 or 5?

Three. You can only claim the bonus once a month.

We generally use the most popular edition in general - the one that comes up when you use the search bar for the book. This was originally done for consistency when page count bonuses are in play (so Person A isn't using the MMPB version at 830 pages while Person B actually read the hardcover with 612, for example.)
However, in cases where that edition may not have a page count, or maybe is the Audio CD edition, which lists the number of CDs as the page count, that won't work for ELIGIBILITY, so I would say to use the most popular edition that has a realistic page count. I'll leave the final decision to Jasmine, though. This is her challenge. I'm just adding a bit of context and my opinion. :)

The rules say "You will also be allowed to add up to 5 new books at each "re-arrange" time."
Does that mean we can REPLACE up to 5 books on that day? Or can we only add if we don't already have 50 on the list?

Great question. You replace books. You cannot add to how long your list is once the challenge begins. At the beginning of the month I'll open the list and give a reminder about replacements. I also normally give instructions on how to indicate you have swapped a book so I can edit the master list I keep.

Thanks!
I'm trying to use as many books as possible for two challenges at the same time (this one and SRC Summer 2021). Some of the SRC tasks won't be posted until early June. When I posted my list I left some slots open to fill on July 1. So I'll go back and fill them in now, and then replace next month if necessary.

Jasmine, how strict is the rule on starting after June 1? I want to include a book that I had previously started (about 5%), but had to return to the library. I plan on completely restarting though. Can I use it?

Yes. If you are restarting it that is fine.

Joanne wrote: "New here and wondering- Some Authors use a middle initial, or middle name-when you say "Author's initials" does that mean first and last, or does the middle initial have to be in the phrase/word?"
For this bonus initials refers to first or last name.

Jasmine - do any of these qualify for the "summer scene on the cover" bonus? None of them are traditional summer activities, but they all look like summer on the cover to me.

I'd say all but the last one work. The only reason I hesitate on the last one is because when I enlarged the cover there were puddles on the ground.

No. You can read them in whatever order you so choose. The numbers are just for points value.

Jasmine, I have more questions! :D
I am sure that at least one book on my list (quite possibly the one that I'm reading now) may be a DNF for me. SO... If I DNF a book, do I get any credit for it? Partial credit? Getting it off my TBR pity points?? LOL

HAHA! Unfortunately no, though I admit I'm afraid of running into this same problem as I go down the line.

I'm locking the lists this evening so if anyone has any last minute changes please make them now.

Just mark as one you will change out July 1st-that's what my thinking has been as I am the queen of DNF's-LoL
Joanne, I like your style! :D
(Though pity credit definitely would be nice. LOL) Oh well. Rules is rules!

Seconding this! I keep a "reserve list" of books in case of

Ethel Rosenberg: An American Tragedy (1950s) is on my list.
Agent Sonya: Moscow's Most Daring Wartime Spy (WWII) is among my "possible replacements".

OK. Thanks for the prompt answer.

No. The edit option is unavailable when a thread is locked.

Hey all! I put together a Google sheet for tracking this challenge...
It's MOSTLY automated and does almost all of the scoring stuff for you (with one exception I can't figure out how to make work, GAH!)...
Here's the link:
Please MAKE A COPY (File > Make a copy), don't edit the original... and then you can track your books to your heart's desire. :)
Instructions: It's pretty self-explanatory, honestly. You'll fill out the columns as headed: Title, author, # pages, whether the book is HF or not (Y/N only), how many years the book has been on your TBR, and any A-E bonus that is applicable. (Keep in mind, these bonuses can only be used ONCE EACH during the challenge.)
From there, when you have finished the book, select "Y" in Column A (Read), and the line will turn a pretty green, all of the scoring will be tabulated, and Column R will have new text in it.
Click the cell in Column R for the book you just marked read, Copy, and then Paste in the Reporting thread comment box, and you should be all set. It will look like this when you paste:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen〈br〉Task #50 - 50 points〈br245 pgs - 2 points〈br〉HF N - 0 points〈br〉TBR Years 8 - 15 points〈br〉Bonus Category - 〈br〉Total Points = 67
And like this when you post:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Task #50 - 50 points
245 pgs - 2 points
HF N - 0 points
TBR Years 8 - 15 points
Bonus Category -
Total Points = 67
NOTE: If you do NOT have an A-E bonus, the text "Bonus Category - " will be listed. You can remove it from the comment post if it bugs you, or leave it if it doesn't. That's the only part I couldn't figure out how to IF Statement out without massive reformatting. So we accept a bit of imperfection and move on with life. lol

Pre-planning is required for this challenge!!
This will be a 3 month challenge, but you will only be able to join at the 1st of each month.
Sign-ups Participants MUST sign up and provide a list of books prior to starting the challenge. The number of books is determined by the start date:
Starting on June 1: 50 books
Starting on July 1: 25 books
Starting on Aug 1: 15 books
There will be TWO opportunities to re-arrange your unread book list on July 1 and Aug 1. Aside from this date, the order of the book cannot be changed. Choose wisely! ;) You will also be allowed to add up to 5 new books at each "re-arrange" time.
IMPORTANT: If the thread is locked, you should NOT edit your list.
NOTE: This is a personal challenge and meant to be a fun way to motivate you to read books that you've been thinking about for a while. However, you decide the parameters of how you want to make your list, like only reading books that you own or reading books on your "wish list". The only real requirement is to read from a pre-determined list.
RULES:
1) Books must be at least 200 pages long. Eligibility for this is determined by the most popular edition on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. If the most popular edition is 197 pages, it will not count, even if the edition read is 215 pages.
2) The first book used for the challenge should be started on or after June 1st. Exception: Each person will be allowed 1 exception for a book that is longer than 500 pages, as long as they are not more than 1/2 way through the book on June 1. You must be using the "progress update" feature of GoodReads to claim this.
3) Audiobooks are accepted. Page numbers are determined by most popular edition on GoodReads.
4) Re-reads are NOT permitted for this challenge. (sorry, one objective is to read down your TBR).
5) There is no genre requirement for this challenge, but there is a Bonus tasks for reading HF.
6) You may always use these books for other challenges in the group as well.
SCORING / HOW IT WORKS:
1) At time of sign-up, each participant will select the books from their 'To-Read' list on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. Any variation of a To-Read shelf will count, including Wishlist. Example, I have a shelf called Nonfiction which are nonfiction books I haven't read yet but want to.
Books will be ordered from 50-1 (if you are not doing the 3 months, adjust when starting later), and their placement will determine their point value. Examples: A book in the #1 place will receive 1 point when done, a book in the #25 spot will receive 25 points, etc.
Tip: Order books that you are most likely to read in the higher value spots to earn higher scores. :)
NOTE: If you are a slow reader, and don't want to list 50 books, you can have a shorter list. However, if you start with 20 books, you can only play with 20 books for the whole challenge (Also, you will want to still start your list at spot 50 if you are playing for points)
2) Bonus Tasks for 50 points each: After you have read at least 5 books on your list, once a month, you can read a book from one of the mods TBR lists. Each month you need to pick a different mod, so if you chose to read one each month, you will have read one from each of the mods.
Choose a book from one of the moderators TBR lists ( Jackie, Becky, JoLene, Gretchen, or Jasmine) that you have not read, and read it.
Jackie's TBR
Becky's TBR
JoLene’s TBR
Gretchen’s TBR
Jasmine’s TBR
**Note: Most of the moderators have multiple TBR lists. However, I have only included one for each mod on this list, but you can read a book from any of their TBR lists so long as it is labeled some form of "want to read" or "to be read".
**Bonus book choices do not need to be chosen ahead of time and these can be changed at any time. ONLY the list of books from your own To-Read list need to be selected by the deadlines. **
***You may not give yourself a shelf score for a bonus book even if it is on your own TBR shelf.***
3) Summer theme bonuses: You can claim 5 point bonus for each of the following. You can only claim each bonus once during the challenge. Only one summer bonus can be claimed per book.
a. Read a book set in summer.
b. Read a book where the main character takes a trip.
c. Read a book with a summer scene on the cover.
d. Read a book set in a different country than where you live.
e. Read a book where one of the author's initials is in the word SUMMER.
f. Read a book set during a pandemic
4) There are several opportunities to earn Bonus Points. Bonus points will be awarded PER BOOK READ when task points are awarded. Partial task points and/or bonus points (page count, HF point, etc) will NOT be awarded if the task is unfinished. Bonus points can only be claimed when reporting the book score (so make sure to check your postings).
4a) Book Length Bonus:
Bonus points will be awarded based on the length of each book read, as follows:
200 to 300 pages = 2 bonus points
301 to 500 pages = 4 bonus points
501 to 750 pages = 6 bonus points
751 to 1,000 pages = 8 bonus points
1,000+ = 10 bonus points
4b) Historical Fiction Bonus = 5 point
WE WILL NOT AWARD HF POINTS IF IT IS NOT REPORTED.
The definition of historical fiction that our group uses is a work published at least 50 years after at least half of the events in the work. Historical fantasy, alternate history and magical realism books are not considered historical fiction for the challenge.
If the book has a dual story-line than 50% of the action needs to take place in the historical setting.
4c) You can claim 2 points for each year that the book has been on your TBR. You should use the "Date Added" field on your bookshelf and you may need to add the field to your bookshelf view. The bonus is as follows, if the "Date Added" is before:
June 1, 2020: 2 points
June 1, 2019: 4 points
June 1, 2018: 6 points
June 1, 2017: 8 points
June 1, 2016: 10 points
June 1, 2015 and beyond: 15 points
_________________________________________
Here's an example of how it will look when reported:
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
#15 spot - 15 points
664 pages - 6 points
HF - 5 point
Date added: Jan 1, 2015: 15 pts
Total - 41 points
