The Sympathizer is a compelling story about the Vietnam War from the point of view of a Vietnamese military man who works for a South Vietnamese General while spying for the North. He was educated in the United States and was groomed by a U.S. (CIA?) officer to help in the fight against communism. When Saigon falls, the officers are moved to the United States as refugees. Some of them eventually go back to resume the fight. The writing is excellent. His prose is electrifying at times. Some sections toward the end were intense and difficult to read, but this is a very worthwhile read.
Regardless of your opinion on the Vietnam war and communism, I think you will find something to support your prior opinions, and something new and illuminating. This was the author's debut novel and he won the Pulitzer Prize for Literature.
