Robert Reiner | 14 comments I’m a huge horror fan. Stephen King being my favorite author I’ve read many horror novels by many different horror writers over the years. Love McCammon, Joe hill, old school Koontz. Love Blake Crouch and Preston/Child who are probably more considered thriller writers with a touch of horror. Who do you recommend I try who might be newer to the horror genre (say maybe from the past 5 years or so)?

message 2: by Robert (new)

Robert Reiner | 14 comments Also a big fan of Laymon and Little. Bunt yeah I see a lot of newer horror fiction on Amazon by authors I never heard of so if anyone has any recommendations that would be helpful

Andy Davidson is an author with two books that I've seen mentioned often: The Boatman's Daughter and In the Valley of the Sun
Haven't read either yet but I will soon.

message 9: by Randy (new)

Randy Money | 424 comments I'd second Tremblay, Langan, Nevill and Sager. I haven't read everything, but what I've read makes me interested in reading more.

Would Stephen Graham Jones still be considered a new writer? If so, I'd add him. Again, I've only read a smattering, including The Only Good Indians, and look forward to reading more.

message 10: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 75 comments Probably not really "newer" but for me whose faves are King, Koontz and McCammon I have really enjoyed Jeff Strand and Grady Hendrix lately, I would highly recommend them if you haven't already tried them.

message 11: by Diane (new)

Diane Johnson | 115 comments Would Silvia Moreno-Garcia count? I enjoyed Mexican Gothic in particular. Also got enough of a taste of Jeff Strand's work to suggest him. And Stephen Graham Jones' The Only Good Indians? Wow! Also, I'm in the middle of P. Djeli' Clark's Ring Shout, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a recommended book for me.

message 12: by Mort (new)

Mort | 26 comments Depends on what kind of horror you are looking for, there are so many sub categories these days it is difficult to narrow it down, but adding to the above mentioned:

Max Booth III
T.J. Payne
Michael Patrick Hicks
Patrick Lacey
Rich Dawkins
Jeff Menapace
Tim Curren
Tom Deady
Michaelbrent Collins
James Newman
Chad Lutzke - different kind of horror, but brilliant writer
Aaron Dries
Adam Howe
The Behrg
William Malmborg

Now, if you are looking for the edgier stuff (Layman/Little), here are some people I can highly recommend for extreme/splatterpunk:

Aron Beauregard
Daniel J. Volpe
Elizabeth Bedlam
River Dizon
Gord Rollo
Todd Keisling
Ryan Harding
Edward Lee
Anton Palmer
Monica J. O' Rourke
J.F Gonzales
Ryan C. Thomas
Sian Rose
Kristopher Triana
Shane McKenzie
Matt Shaw
Ash Ericmore
Matthew Cash
Jon Athan
Michael Bray
Kyle M. Scott
Jack Ketchum
Bryan Smith

And a few who will gross you out:
Chandler Morrison
Rayne Havoc
Simon McHardy

Honorable mentions:
UNBORTION - Rowland Bercy Jr.
BILLY SILVER - Daniel Volpe
THE SLOB - Aaron Beauregard
CHERUB - David C. Hayes
WORMWOOD - Lutzke/Meyer
SCANLINES- Todd Keisling
THE SMELL OF CEDAR - River Dixon
SLAUGHTER BOX - Carver Pike
TOUCH THE NIGHT -Max Booth III
THE MIDWIVES - Duncan Ralston
HELLSWORLD HOTEL - Matthew Vaughn
MUERTE CON CARNE - Shane McKenzie
MEAT - Michael Bray
If you like the humor (Jeff Strand always!) - check out LARRY by Adam Millard

Hope this helps

I didn't mention Moreno-Garcia because she appears to change genre with each book. I agree that Mexican Gothic was very good, and I'm looking forward to the paperback of Certain Dark Things as well as one she's tagging as noir, Velvet Was the Night.

Mort, of the names I recognize, those aren't exactly newer writers. Ketcham, for instance, died in 2018.

Then again, I'm not sure what newer in quotes means. New to the poser?

From OP:

"newer to the horror genre (say maybe from the past 5 years or so)"

They were looking for horror authors who have started publishing/come to prominence in more recent years.

message 16: by Mort (new)

Mort | 26 comments Dear Robjr73,
I hereby release you from this contract and will no longer force you with a gun to your head to check out the authors I mentioned. The amount of shame and sorrow I feel for not meeting the brief has forced me to resign as agent Polkadot from the Red Nose Agency, and the disinformation I have spread will make me go directly to jail without passing GO and I will not collect my $200. Furthermore, I want to thank Mr. Money for saving your immortal soul from damnation by making you aware of my pathological, harmful lies, before it causes the Apocalypse.

The rest of the board is for READER discussion, not self promotion.

message 44: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 77 comments E.V. Knight is sort of new. She's only been published for about two years now.

message 45: by Mark (new)

Mark (markpeters) Catherine McCarthy is a more recent author I've discovered, and I really enjoy her style. Mists and Megaliths is a wonderful collection of short stories that has a good mix of psychological, gothic, and cosmic horror, along with dark fantasy. She has a few other books out, as well.

message 46: by վíܲ (new)

վíܲ Bomfim | 1 comments I recommend the author Eric Mota, I love the universe he did create in Hell Contract.

message 47: by Michael (new)

Michael F Simpson | 5 comments I recommend Iain Reid, specifically his book 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things.' It has elements of your typical Stephen King novel, in my opinion.

Theresa (mysteries.and.mayhem) (mysteriesandmayhem) | 359 comments I don't think I saw anyone mention Jeremy Robert Johnson I apologize if I missed it, but he's fantastic if you like shorter reads. He has a few great compilations of short stories that weirded me out on all sorts of different levels. :)
