Nominations are now open until July 22nd for the September 2021 Open Pick.

Nominating guidelines:
- Fiction (original & translation, if applicable) first published between January 1, 2000 and September 1, 2020. For translations the latter date must be an English edition.
- One nomination per person (please do not nominate or vote for a book unless you are certain you can read and discuss if it wins)
- A book this group has not yet read (see the group bookshelf or the Index of all Group Reads here)
- A book that is not better suited to the wild card (genre) category

If you are nominating, please begin your post by stating "I nominate [name with hyperlink to book]"

The discussion will start on September 1st

Luke (korrick) I've a couple pieces of literary historical fiction in mind this time around, but I'm not sure where most would fall on whether one or both are too "genre"-y for this category, so. Any discerning advice would be welcome.

They are:
At Swim, Two Boys - Jamie O'Neill
We, the Drowned - Carsten Jensen

Thanks Lark.

Aubrey - as far as I can tell from a quick scan of the blurbs both of those are OK for the open pick, but I have never read either so I am not 100% sure!

Alright. In that case, I nominate At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill (pub 2001, 562 pp).

Both looked appropriate/good for nominations to me, as well--thanks!

I am tempted to throw one in myself. I nominate The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard.

Wow, that's tossing a huge unexpected log on the fire here at the last minute, Hugh!

This is possibly the most varied list for the same poll that I've ever seen on goodreads.

We now have a three-way tie in the poll. Still plenty of time to go, but more votes would be welcome - it might be tempting to put at least one of the runners-up into the next moderator poll (which is my turn).

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments I see Real Life is leading and that the Kindle edition is only $2.99 in the US.

The Great Fire is a very enjoyable read.

The other two books sound quite interesting. I'm tempted most by At Swim, Two Boys but a vote for it won't help and a vote for The Polish Boxer would create another tie. So what to do?

I wouldn't worry about creating another tie - the poll has two more days to run, and if necessary I may switch mine at the last minute.

I have just picked up a copy and look forward to it. Lark - are you happy to lead the discussion?

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) | 721 comments I'd love for people to recommend this novel to their libraries for acquisition, even if you do get the Kindle edition.
