(this is sort of non-review kind of review) This is the third in the scifi mystery series (yes, these four books in themselves are also in the Robot series, etc, but these are also murder mysteries solved by a police detective and his partner) by Asimov--well, at least three of the books are mysteries and the protagonist is a police detective who works on solving them. It looks like the fourth is something different, but features some of the same characters. Sometimes the fact that a book in a genre can fit in more than one genre is overlooked, but in this case, I would say the scifi is the dominant one (but mystery is one of the top shelves for this).
I don't love Asimov's writing, but he definitely qualifies to be in the top classic scifi writers, even if this one was written three decades after the one before it. Some say that it's not necessary to read the books prior to this in order to enjoy this, and I suppose you could do that, but I thought it helped to know the previous two books about Elijah Baley and his partner, Daneel.
