This series starts off with two normal siblings going to (I believe) their relatives house. I remember them as the grandparents.

Pretty soon in the first book, the sister is feeding fairies. She is having trouble getting them to drink it, so she drinks it herself to gain their trust. This results in her becoming a half-fairy or fairy kin or fairy mage, or something along those lines.

Near the end of the first book, the brother pulls a cursed nail out of a tree or something and similarly becomes a shadow mage/shadow walker/something similar.

I also remember there being a zelda-like dungeon early in the series. One part requires them to choose an opponent from a handful of pictures on the wall. I do not remember much else about it.
