yes. exactly.

thats what some "free" ebook platforms do. so you can download their books for free but you need to be a member and in order to be a member, you have to make a "donation"

lots of classical books are free, like pride and prejudice or most shakespeare plays on gutenberg.com also, thriftbooks.com sells used books for less, and there’s also always the library!

Bookfunnel has a lot of free indie books. Often it requires signing up for a newsletter that you can unsubscribe from later.

You can lend Kindle books and buy them for others.

z-lib.org is the website I use. It's not really legal but that's how I download all my books. If you can't access the link, use a vpn.

Why not just check them out from the library?

Just use z library, it's free. I use that, it's honestly amazing
