Miriam Murcutt | 7 comments Do you think there's a growing pressure now to finish a book, then the next one, and the next one?

Has the emphasis moved from quality reading to quantity reading?

Has the focus moved from considering the meaning of what you've just read to zipping on to another opening chapter?

Book reviews, reading challenges, data on reading habits, competitions for the number of books read per annum - all can push you to read more. That's good. But do you find yourself galloping to finish a book just so you can get along to the next one; picking short books over long ones; choosing easy reads over complicated ones?

Has the race for The End come to dominate your reading habits? What do you think?

This is a good topic you have put up. I think I have been affected by this need to read more books at some point but not always. I am a mood reader so usually I pick up books acc to my mood and otherwise drop reading if it doesn't suit my mood. But I have never been influenced to reach the end except for some books which were too boring to go through but I had read them >50%.

Fabitha (fabitha89) | 575 comments As usual I agree with you, Rushali!
I am a fast reader, always have been and probably always will be, but that's all me.
I feel like the pressure is there, but I've been a strong reader way before social media, so I am not easily affected. I set a challenge each year but I'm not so eager to complete it to chose books just for that purpose - I'm a mood reader too!

In fact I am also wary of the social media sensational books, I usually come around to read them way after the hype is spent, or I read them before the hype begins because I find them with other means. Then socials explodes and I'm like "tsk tsk" lol

In short, I hope people don't feel pressured to read, that would be sad as it would probably ruin part of the fun for them.

Erica | 1309 comments I have noticed that I’m reading shorter books but that’s because I’m a mood reader. A short book has a better shot at being finished before I see a shiny new book. 😁 I don’t like dnfing books but I still do and hope I’ll get back to them.
I have joined a couple of reading challenges and they do cause pressure to finish them. I started them to push myself out of rereading the same things and to try new authors. Making use of groups on goodreads definitely helps manage that. If a book isn’t enjoyable or a prompt is tough there are many people with helpful suggestions to keep you from hitting a slump. Mostly though I’m the one putting pressure on myself.

Challenges do increase the pressure, especially difficult ones but sometimes they are also"challenging" and fun but only when I find I have time 😅 otherwise it becomes a necessity. 😑

Fabitha (fabitha89) | 575 comments I've always only joined easy challenges for that reason, I don't like to be pressured into reading stuff and I can get in a bad mood XD reading is my oasis and I like to keep it clean and peaceful!
