Juliet Brown | 30 comments this is one I am having a very hard time with. I have a specific sub genre in my head of what an 'adventure story' is and other going back to Alexandre Dumas I can't seem to find anything

message 4: by Meredith (last edited Dec 10, 2021 07:36PM) (new)

Meredith | 39 comments Miracle in the Andes is an amazing true-life adventure book that works for this task. It's beautifully written (and the audiobook is great, too!). It's not for the feint of heart, but, my goodness, you will be rewarded for the effort you put into this one. Really life affirming and thought-provoking -- and a page-turner to boot!

Rebecca Huerta | 125 comments Miracle in the Andes sounds good!!

Mandie (mystickah) | 218 comments This looks to be a good starting point: /list/show/1...

message 7: by Mandie (new)

Mandie (mystickah) | 218 comments I feel something like NK Jemisin's The Fifth Season , Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, or Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse could work well here.

they definately could, depending on how this genre divide works in your head. For me those are all firmly fantasy or sci fi which I why I am probably re reading The Three Musketeers

message 9: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Ryan (reikifeet) | 13 comments Is Cutting For Stone an adventure book? It's on another list i'm doing.

message 10: by Bonnie G. (new)

Bonnie G. (narshkite) | 1413 comments Cutting for Stone is not an adventure story

message 11: by Tara (new)

Tara | 20 comments I'll read A Touch of Darkness (Scarlett St. Clair).

A Touch of Darkness (Hades & Persephone, #1) by Scarlett St. Clair

message 12: by Asakosophia (new)

Asakosophia | 19 comments I'm thinking My Year Abroad

message 13: by Juliet (new)

Juliet Brown | 30 comments maybe I can stretch 'adventure' far enough to read Mycroft and Sherlock, the first was pretty actively paced

message 15: by Rebecca (last edited Dec 11, 2021 10:46PM) (new)

Rebecca W | 17 comments I'm thinking Ascension, which I think should count for the queer challenge.

message 17: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 360 comments I'm considering reading Huntress or Dragon Pearl, but there are a lot of books that fit this task that I'm interested in.

Washington Black"

Oh that is a great suggestion, I read it a few years ago and it definitely qualifies as an adventure tale!

message 20: by Ron (new)

Ron As Long as Grass Grows: The Indigenous Fight for Environmental Justice, from Colonization to Standing Rock

I can see this book working for this category since it's about environmental justice so that kind of fits within the adventure aspect.

message 21: by Brittany (last edited Dec 15, 2021 08:13AM) (new)

Brittany Morrison | 71 comments Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi is on my TBR and seems to fit here. It's a middle grade read, but sometimes I need those to break up some more difficult reading.

message 22: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (kelwal) | 4 comments I'm going to read The Unlikely Thru-Hiker by Derick Lugo which seems to fit the bill and is nonfiction for those who asked above.

The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey

Jennifer (jennifermreads) | 26 comments Mandie wrote: "This looks to be a good starting point: /list/show/1..."

Thank you for this. It made it very easy for me to scan for titles on my TBR already. I've added a bonus goal for myself to read off my TBR whenever possible. Too many good ones languish on that darn list of mine!

message 24: by Beth (new)

Beth (drippingfaucet) | 13 comments Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse is also a great fit for this

message 26: by Alex (new)

Alex (papercraftalex) Has anyone who's read Labyrinth Lost think it would count?

message 27: by Audra (new)

Audra (themonkeygirl) | 101 comments Not sure why this category was so hard for me to choose a book, but I'm going with Sorcerer to the Crown. It was in my TBR so I must have thought I wanted to read it.

message 28: by ChezJulie (new)

ChezJulie | 50 comments I'm reading Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley. The protagonist, who is part Ojibwe and part White, goes undercover in her community. I am enjoying the main character and depiction of Ojibwe culture.

I read this a few years ago; it's not an adventure story.

message 30: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (booklovinleslie) | 5 comments I just read it a couple months ago, but Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia would be a great one!!

message 31: by Sue (new)

Sue (sue_re) | 35 comments I can't tell if this is meant to be fiction or nonfiction. For now I'm planning to read The Black Veins by Ashia Monet. If it's nonfiction, I'll switch to The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey by Derick Lugo.

message 32: by Ron (new)

Ron Amy wrote: "I read this a few years ago; it's not an adventure story"

Oh okay, thanks. It kind of sounded like one.

I'll have to go and find something else.

If anyone has any nonfiction adventure stories that would be great. I think I have several in mind but I want other ideas as well.

I may be doing "Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands" for this one.

BookRiot says that the point of the reading challenge is "to push yourself to expand your horizons and break out of your comfortable reading bubble." So we all get to choose what our own personal definition of a category is, and take advice as we like to help us make a selection.

Okay, I think I get it.

I'll look through my book collection. I have a lot of nature stuff that I think could work I just need to see if I have any that are BIPOC.

I just finished The Unlikely Thru-Hiker: An Appalachian Trail Journey by Derick Lugo.

It was humorous and upbeat. I gave it 5 stars.

message 37: by Liza (new)

Liza (lizae) | 33 comments I’m a little embarrassed to say I don’t really know how to define an adventure story. You could probably argue there’s some type of adventure in most stories.

Thank you! It's already on my shelf, now I have a great excuse to move it up to my TBR list.
Appreciate the suggestion!

message 40: by Regan (new)

Regan Slaughter | 46 comments I'm almost finished with Valerie Valdez's Chilling Effect and I think it's a really good fit for this prompt (as long as Book Riot is defining adventure story in the way that I would).

message 41: by Kate (new)

Kate (kate_noe) | 16 comments Would Kindred by Octavia Butler work here? It has time travel, which seems like an adventure to me...

message 42: by Sarah (last edited Jan 05, 2022 12:13PM) (new)

Sarah French (sarahelizabeth82) | 10 comments Firekeeper's Daughter is SOOOO good! I would also recommend Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin - it's children's but it's a masterpiece and the audiobook is excellent!

message 43: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessefozbom) | 18 comments Just about to finish Washington Black by Esi Edugyan - it is definitely an adventure!

Whitney | 2 comments Kate wrote: "Would Kindred by Octavia Butler work here? It has time travel, which seems like an adventure to me..."

Most of Octavia Butler's books and especially Kindred fall into sci fi but I see why you may want to stretch it into an adventure

message 45: by Roman (new)

Roman Colombo | 10 comments Just finished The Dragon Republic. Absolutely incredible and more amazing (and, be warned, brutal) than the first book.

If you like comics, this one is more of a zine. I just finished Montana Diary and I'd definitely categorize it as an adventure story.

I read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon for a prompt a year or so ago, and completely concur!
