You start reading the book around the date that is set and you put your thoughts in a message. If you use parts of the book, you use the spoiler tags. That is because other readers who aren't so far in the book yet, don't get spoilers. You also can react on other posts of other readers in your message. You just discuss the book ;)

I've started and it's great being here again. I've read the first three books years ago but I've watched the TV series so sometimes both things muddle a bit. Especially since the first time I read the books I did it at the same time that I was watching the show

(view spoiler)[ the prologue is always amazing and raises more questions. It's so much better than the portrayal of the Others in the TV series. Its very atmospheric and creepy which contrsts a lot with the following chapters

Jon having an albino wolf that is clearly different from his siblings matches perfectly with his life. I've always enjoyed his meeting his Tyrion, how he tried to give him advice as he saw jon struggling

It's incredible how quickly Martin made me hate viserys. Well, Joffrey is clearly a runner up

I understand catelyns opinions on Jon but that doesn't make me like how badly she treates him

I hope that mention of Aryas corpse being found in spring with a needle stuck in her fingers won't be a prediction (hide spoiler)]

I've started and I'm somewhere around page 163, but need to find time to post.

@Paula: the dynamics of the characters and between the characters are so much more interesting than in the series.

So, just finished the first 4 chapters. They don't have a number, just names, and I finished the first Daenerys chapter. Let's start with the prologue - the Wall! You can just feel the cold and fear penetrating your bones! Then in Bran's Ch., (view spoiler)[ When he had to watch his dad take a life, I kind of felt sorry for the kid. He is only 7 years old, and John is 13!!! Their oldest brother is, I think, 17 and Grayjoy is 19... The youngest boy is only 3. They are all so young! And the wolf puppies - exactly six, as many as the siblings. It is a sign of things coming... Catelyn comes off a bit snooty at first. With her being a part of the new and prevalent religion, while the Starks are of the First Man's blood and follow the old religion with the watcher trees ... It is very mood setting, this introduction to the Stark family:)
Speaking of young, wow, Daenerys is only 13 and about to be sold into marriage!!! No wonder her inner monologue sounds like a scared little girl... And her brother is just disgusting! I can't believe the tradition in their family is to marry brother and sister, in order to keep the family blood pure... And now she will be sold for the Kal's army... I feel terrible for her... I sometimes wished he had put both names and number of chapters. Nevertheless its not too much of a biggie!

The prologue had me holding my book so tight xD I have so many questions yet left me on a cliff hanger! I hope I get to read more on what happen there !! And Bran.. his gonna go through so many life lessons i feel like haha. Although, him talking with his dad Edd was cute for me. I always feel sorry for Jon he deserves to be treated well, but I'm glad he got the coolest wolf out of all of them hell ya! and, I'm glad the rest of the brothers are friendly with him especially at a young age. and I'm happy him and Robb are quite close too. UGH I just love the starks family. and for Catelyn she does kinda come off snooty, but I guess it adds bit of flavour to the starks family.

I reealllly hope Khal treats deanerys well, her brothers are just so disrespectful.

I agree. I like how Jon has a good relationship with his siblings, but his dad and Catelyn are not the warmest to him, are they. I am two chapters later, and he just told his uncle that he wants to join the Black Watch on The Wall, and obviously that means to become celibate like a monk, for life!!! I was glad his uncle reminded him that he is only 14 going on 15 years old and hasn't had a woman yet, so he is too young and inexperienced to make that kind of a choice for the rest of his life. And, he seems to really love Jon, because he said he is sorry Jon wasn't his son... That was very sweet!
We got some more ages - Sansa is 11, and the King's kids are 12, 8, and 5... As I said, all of them are younger than young! And the descriptions of the royal family - Robert is big and fat, his wife and her twin brother are golden and beautiful, and Tyrion, ugly, blond and a dwarf... Robert was cruel to insist Eddard become The King's Hand, since it will mean putting him in the middle of a wasps nest... He is obviously all about the North...

Tyrion giving advice to Jon about claiming his being a bastard and accepting it, so it will be a strength not a weakness, and how "all dwarfs might be bastards, but not all bastards need be dwarfs", was a very strong moment. You immediately know, just by this conversation, that his father blames Tyrion for his mother's death and that his father hates him... So sad...

So, Rob is 14, Jof is 12, and Arya is only 9 years old and the only one who looks like Jon... And Jof is already acting like a brat, despite being "dreamy" kind of beautiful... Nothing is fair. Jon, you are so right!

Bran's chapter... (view spoiler)[ Yeahhhh, that happened...:((( A seven year old boy being thrown from the tower, just because he has seen the Queen and her brother f@#king... What a shame! How can anyone like those two, when this is the way they deal with anyone in their way? And obviously, the old King's Hand has been snooping around the two of them and they are most probably responsible for his death... But Bran is just a naive kid! He didn't even know what they were doing... Naked wrestling indeed... (view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)]

Robert is obsessed with killing "the Dragon Spawn" as he calls them... So he has ordered them killed... Not that I would mind the brother dying... Robert wasn't right killing the indiscriminately when he took the throne though... The Lannisters are not much better than the Targaryens thought... And Jamie is very questionable.

The last words Jon and Catelyn exchanged when he left, kind of hurt my heart for both of them... For him, because he hasn't done anything to deserve that type of hate coming his way, and for her, because even though I don't agree with her, I can understand where she is coming from...

Boy, Jon is in for a rude awakening with realizing the type of people who join The Black... His uncle has done him no favors romanticizing the valor of those who protect against The Dark...

Eddard's chapter... OMG! This chapter made me so angry!!! (view spoiler)[ I can't believe that bitch Queen and her lousy son just had Lady killed!!!! And I am both pissed at Sansa and feel sorry for her. She obviously is a dainty girl who dreams of pretty things and fairy-tales... She has been coddled and raised to be a lady, but she hasn't any clue of the reality of court life and the people who thrive there...

Poor Lady, but also poor butcher's boy!!! Just because he played with Arya at swords with sticks, he was run down like an animal and slain by the Hound!!!! Mother f@#_er!!! My heart is just broken for those poor souls... Now the girls are cut off from their most fierce defenders and are going into an enemy territory... :(((( (hide spoiler)]

I feel for Bran and all of his emotions... I get it, he is such a hurt child... But I am even more worried about the little brother, who seems to be kind of left to cope with everything on his own, and he is like 4-5 years old only... That is not boding well... And we get the old woman who tells stories and Hodor!!! I love those characters:)))

Paula, GRRM is great at making us hate Viserys! He is such a slimy, pathetic waste of space! And Daenerys is starting to grow a backbone and is (view spoiler)[ pregnant at 14!!!! 14! I know this has been the norm for many more centuries of human existence, than the puny 150 years since we as majority of cultures, have decided that a woman becomes culturally such at the minimum age of 16, but I agree with the more current mores... I think 16 is still a child, but darn it, 14 is just too young in my opinion...

Jon finally understanding that he has been privileged, despite being a bastard, and deciding to actually trying to understand his fellow brothers, is a great moment in his development as a character... Good for him! (hide spoiler)]

The tournament - I was so happy that the less horrible of the two pretty despicable brothers won! And once again, Sansa shows her unwillingness to accept reality and to pretend she lives in a pretty fairytale world... Arya is adorable with her "dancing" lessons:)

However, despite all being so young I was very surprised jon wanted to join the black watch. I mean from my understanding it's probably from the emotions he had of being 'left out' and wants to escape.

For Robert and Tyrion they are both very funny... maybe Tyrion the most haha he knows how to make one's laugh! But yes, I could understand Tyrion expression when discussing being a bustard.. very very sad. both Jon and tyrion may become really good friends I hope. Robert however, can be lil rude when he was chatting with Edd about becoming the kings hand.

I feel like the lanninsters may be lil worse than Targaryens.. hm I need more info on those two clans, and Jamie is so very questionable don't like him so far.

OMG YES THE CONVO JON AND CATELYN HAD! there was some strong connection there so emotional for both !! Edd has strong love and loyalty for Jon .. CATELYN SHOULD TOO : ( I'm sure Jon will be happy if she accepted him.

I can tell you, I am 40%in... An Arya chapter. Let me count the chapter numbers... I think it is chapter 32-33, not exactly sure... She is running after cats:) For her dance lessons:))) Do you need me to slow down? I will, just let me know...

I am so caught up in the story, I can't make myself put it down... I am telling myself, well, let me finish this chapter and I'll go to bed, but then I want to check the next one, then the next... It's addictive...

Things in the castle are getting soooo tens, I know I could never live in a place or with a position where intrigue and machinations, backstabbing and assassinations are just a regular part of the day...

We are in the Erie, and Catelyn's sister and nephew are absolutely horrible!!! I wonder if the Stone girl Catelyn met going up the mountain to the castle, is also King Robert's bastard child... He is a piece of crap also, in my opinion... He might have started out as a good man with honorable intentions, but he has fallen big time ever since...

Jamie Lanister is horrible so far as well. Honestly, apart from the Starks, all the rest I would like to stay away from... (view spoiler)[ Jamie ordering all the Stark men was just... I am starting to run out of adjectives for despicable anymore... The only good Lanister is Tyrion, and only horrible things are piling up over his head... Life really isn't fair... (hide spoiler)]

YIKES!! poor tyrion... he is honestly the nicest lanister written, yet why is he going through soooo mucch. I honestly doubted when I first read it was HIS KINFE that was going to slit Brans throat.. has none of the starks family seen his loyalty and kindness but JON SNOW ?!?! if I can guess IT BE THAT DISGUSTING GUY JAMIE OR HIS SISTER UGH.

also true, at first I liked Robert but as the story goes along he starts to change especially when edd said quote "and pray that he is the man I think he is, not the man I fear his become". when I read that im like woah woah red flag edd feels it toooo... Exactly! It seems like being a King looked good at first, everyone doing whatever you say, but the actual responsibility of governing the realm is too much for him, and he has kind of given up. He has bankrupted the kingdom, but never stops spending, never thinking of where the money is coming from and how he is becoming a slave to the Lanisters and those the council keeps borrowing from... On top of that, he is married into one of the most smart, powerful and cunning families, and Cersey being the disillusioned and prideful woman she is, and no wonder he just wants to close his eyes and deny his reality...

For a smart, strong and honorable man, Eddard Stark is very stupid! All the chances he was given to get to live another day, and he stuck to whatever he thinks is honorable, and now he has gotten himself in deep trouble and his men killed... Wake up! You are the only warrior on the battlefield who is playing by the rules! Everyone else is there to lie, cheat and steel there way to victory, not to be honorable... I am simultaneously proud and disappointed in him... He should have known that Little Finger is not going to do anything to jeopardize his position, if there is even a small chance of him being on the losing side. I am just so pissed at the whole situation! And the Queen is just vile!
