Neus (neusfigueras) | 20 comments I'm at chapter 4.

Clara seems to be very powerful but she has too much pressure on her. Everyone is counting on her and that is a lot to take in.

On the other hand, the idea that witches control the weather is very original and the allusion to climate change is very relevant at this point in history:

"They began to push the limits of our power and our atmosphere. At first, we went along with it, caught up in their excitement. Then their excitement turned to greed, and they refused to slow down, ignoring our warnings and charging ahead, behaving as if magic were infinite. As if this planet were infinite. Now they’ve overplayed their hand."

"The shaders couldn’t see past their desire for more, developing land that humans were never meant to touch, requiring control in areas that were only ever meant to be wild.

There isn’t enough magic to support it all."

Neus (neusfigueras) | 20 comments Each chapter begins with a quote from "A Season for Everything" that is significant to the chapter it precedes, and some of them are really beautiful!

I am on chapter 16 and I hope you will join in the reading. This is a good one!

Welcome SonataReader!
Glad you're joining.

Meghan | 2 comments I tried very hard to get into this book, but unfortunately I just don’t think it was for me. Although the writing is beautiful, the conflict left me always wanting more. I also had a hard time connecting with the main character, finding her almost petulant at times. Curious to hear other people’s thoughts!

Neus (neusfigueras) | 20 comments Interesting reflections, Meghan! Thanks!
I'm on chapter 30 now, and while Clara is more confident, I don't think she's reached a petulant tone, at least not yet.
At times I find her selfish about her plans for the total eclipse, but now there has been an interesting twist in her magic, so I'm excited to see what happens next.
I also think it was unfair that she didn't give Paige a proper clousure.
On the other hand, Sang is perfect and such a flawless character may appear implausible.

I love the quotes on each chapter! Everything ties into a lesson Clara has to learn.

Yeah, I'm jumping in too, I read almost half the book in a single afternoon! It's really great, eloquent prose, Clara is relatable (to me at least) and I love the simple magic system, and it feels like a slice of life fantasy story.

I can understand why people wouldn't like Clara though, but her crippling self doubt is really relatable to me.

I agree, Janine! I get that Clara's self-doubt is crippling, but at the end, she's a teenager who has lost many people close to her and there's no one alive like her that she can talk to.

I'm almost at the end of the book and so far, I like where the book is going.

Janine | 155 comments Finished. I love how the story ended, and it was great growth for Clara. I like that it takes place over a year, it makes the story realistic. I also like that it's not this "save the world" plot, but more of a character study. While Clara does seem selfish, I easily understand her wanting a way out of her situation.

I can see why someone wouldn't like this book. I 100% think your enjoyment of this book is dependent if you're okay with characters going through crippling self-doubt and slowly going through it. I happen to relate to having those feelings and loved the transformation.

I agree with you, Janine. Seeing Clara, and some of the other characters, change was great.
I also liked that it's not about one person saving the world, but a collaborative process, as it is in the real world.

I'll write my review soon to share with you :)
