NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 10593 comments This is a space opera with adventure, war, and romance. This isn't really my kind of book, but surprisingly, one of the war plots was a highlight. Cordelia Naismith is the leader of a survey team on a distant planet, when they are attacked by soldiers from the planet Barrayar. She ordered her ship to escape, and she is taken prisoner by Aral Vorkosigan who was left by his ship. It takes them days (weeks?) to reach safety, giving them time to get to know one another. Their discussions about honor would be at home in many 17th or 18th century novels involving officers. The book had an interesting mix of old-fashioned and futuristic elements. The devious politics on Barrayar could have been inspired by many royal courts in earth's history, but the obstetrical methods on another planet were clearly science fiction. I didn't really get a sense of the cultures or planets of the people from the three different groups at war. I understand that this was the author's first book, so I imagine that the worldbuilding continues in other books in the series.

Andie | 42 comments If you enjoyed this one ... keep going to the next book in the series (Barrayar)! I love the times of honour, identity, love - the characters and especially relationships - in the context of politics, military, puzzles to solve etc. I discovered this series in September and am immersed in the world now. Great pick!
