Jim Holden is XO of an ice miner making runs from the rings of Saturn to the mining stations of the Belt. When he and his crew stumble upon a derelict ship, "The Scopuli," they find themselves in possession of a secret they never wanted. A secret that someone is willing to kill for - and kill on a scale unfathomable to Jim and his crew. War is brewing in the system unless he can find out who left the ship and why.

Detective Miller is looking for a girl. One girl in a system of billions, but her parents have money and money talks. When the trail leads him to "The Scopuli" and rebel sympathizer Holden, he realizes that this girl may be the key to everything.

Holden and Miller must thread the needle between the Earth government, the Outer Planet revolutionaries, and secretive corporations - and the odds are against them. But out in the Belt, the rules are different, and one small ship can change the fate of the universe.

I'm very behind on my buddy reads, so I just started this tonight.

Prologue - Chapter 5

Ok so far this is pretty similar to the show. We're following Holden and Miller in alternating chapters (plus Julie in the prologue).

The interactions between Holden and the crew members are great so far. Naomi is the voice of reason which I like. The destruction of the Canterbury and death of the crew is rough. Jim's message is sure to cause a lot of chaos after it gets out.

Miller's chapters are slightly less interesting to me. He's been ordered to find Julie, who we saw in the prologue, and I'm looking forward to that investigation ramping up. The belter dialogue is definitely a bit confusing and I'm glad I've seen a few season of the show as that's helping me with it.

Chapters 6-15

Ok wow, a lot went down here.

Miller's chapters are still slightly boring but assuming his storyline is like the show then it will pick up some later. The different factions on Ceres are interesting and the OPA seems to have their fingers in everything. Dawes is an interesting guy and he seems to be at the center of the OPA stuff on Ceres. Miller's investigation into Julie's disappearance is getting interesting.

Holden's chapters are holding my attention a lot more than Miller's. After the destruction of the Cant Holden and crew have been picked up by the MCRN only for the MCRN to be attacked forcing them to flee. We lost Shed in that attack which was a bit sad. Now that they rest of the crew is safe, they're set to meet up with Fred Johnson, a character that seems to have his own agenda. I'm looking forward to reading more as the group have found themselves at the center of something big.

Chapters 16-30

This is great so far. Holden and crew are now on Eros and so is Miller. I'm enjoying the back and forth between Holden and Miller. They don't know what to make of each other. I feel bad for Julie and what happened to her, the Phoebe pathogen is super creepy. Holden and Miller getting dosed with radiation is really bad and they need to get back to the Roci ASAP.

Chapters 31-45

The plan for dealing with Eros is crazy. But it's something so ridiculous that for this group, it could work. What the protomolecule is doing on there is so creepy and no one seems to understand how bad it is.

I love how loyal the Roci crew is to each other and to Holden. I feel a bit bad for Miller as he had a taste of what it's like to be on the inside of that but by doing what needed to be done with the scientist, it's put him on the outs with Holden.

Chapter 46 - Epilogue

Damn, so it was Julie all along that had Eros behaving so oddly. I liked that Miller figured it out and talked her into not destroying Earth.

What's happening on Venus is sure to have ramifications going forward and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

This was a fantastic read and I definitely need to pick up the next book soon.
