Grace Meredith (koreantrash) I'm a bit of a late starter to this whole reading challenge. In fact, I just started a few days ago. I saw it on Pinterest and I thought, "Ah, at last! A challenge for my inner nerd and bookworm!" However, I'm having some trouble deciding which books to read. I don't want to read anything very inappropriate or explicit. A few of the sections I'm stuck on are:

A funny book. I really can't think of any good funny books that I've heard of, or seen on the Internet, that aren't completely innapropriate or silly kids books. I really need some recommendations on this one!

A book set in high school. Anybody know some good ones? There are too many.

A book with magic. I've read literally ALL of the fantasy books in my library, so... I need some weirder ideas here. I love magic, but I can't seem to find any books that I haven't already read.

A book set in your hometown. I live in Providence, RI, so if anyone knows some good books set there... That's a hard one.

A banned book. Also, really hard to find an appropriate one. Does anyone know some interesting religious ones, perhaps?

A book based or turned into a TV show. I do not have cable TV, so I'm afraid this is way out of my league. Help me!

Jessica | 225 comments "Funny book" is basically whatever you think would be funny. Terry Prachett books are considered funny, and I found a 'how to survive' parody book that is funny and I am actually really enjoying.

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) Thanks, Jessica! I've decided to go with 'The Importance of Being Earnest' by Oscar Wilde.

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments Books with magic, I am just going to mention some books that I can think, maybe you have not read one of them:
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
- Magyk (Septimus Heap series)
- Charmed Life or any other book of Diana Wynne Jones
- The Amulet of Samarkand

- Beautiful Creatures
- Revenge of the Witch

I love Diana Wynne Jones and she has a lot of books about magic, maybe you could find one of them that you haven't read. Good luck with the challenge, I am enjoying it very much :)

message 5: by Grace Meredith (new)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) Thanks! I haven't read any of Diana Wyne Jones' books, I'll check her out! I have read Harry Potter and Magyk.

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments Excellent! I would recommed especially "Charmed Life" and "The Lifes of Christopher Chant" from her.

message 7: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 225 comments Ah! Yes, Howl's Moving Castle is awesome! :D
If you need any more options for magic books I highly recommend Through the Door especially if you like Irish mythology (set in modern times).

Jessica | 225 comments Also for books based on tv shows, I am doing The 100, but I could see Attack on Titan, Vol. 1 working if you don't mind manga/graphic novels. It is a very well done series (though quite violent, which is what happens when there are mindless man-eating giants).

Michelle Winchester A banned book: Have you read The Last Temptation of Christ? It's in one of the Banned books lists, so it's probably a save bet and a lot of people are praising it.

message 10: by Grace Meredith (new)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) Thanks a bunch for all these suggestions! I happen to really like manga, so I'll try Howl's Moving Castle, the movie of which I have seen. I've heard of The Last Temptation of Christ... I'll check it out. ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Michelle Winchester But really, if you go through the Banned books lists on ŷ, the books aren't inappropriate at all. The lists are full of books that are a part of Western book canon and really populat books (like Harry Potter), so I don't think you would have a hard time to pick from it.

message 12: by Grace Meredith (new)

Grace Meredith (koreantrash) I didn't know they had some banned book lists. Interesting! I'll go check it out.

.•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*•. Christine .•*¨`*•✿ ✿•*¨`*• For TV shows, there is also Bittenand Outlander, both of which I enjoyed. I'm actually planning on re-reading Bitten for my TV show week.

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) If you can't find any for the specific town you live in try searching for books just based somewhere in your state. That is what I had to do because the town i'm from is so small that no books are based in it, lol.

Lorraine | 57 comments There is actually a week sometime during the year called Banned Book Week. Google that and you'll find long lists of books that have been banned or "challenged" for one reason or another. "Little House on the Prairie" (and maybe others of Laura Ingalls-Wilder) was banned somewhere because of how it portrays Native Americans. The thing is, that's how people looked at Native American back then. It's like "Huckleberry Finn" and its portrayal of black people. Also I think that was banned because of how it shows a friendship between a white boy and a slave.

Anyway, there are lots of totally appropriate books that have been banned for all sorts of reasons. Personally, if I hear some group is trying to ban a book I'll specifically want to read it. :)

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments Oh,yes! The one of the Moving Castle, that's a good one too!

Oh I agree with Bitten and outlander. These are both great books to read for the TV show week! I have read the whole Bitten series and I really enjoyed it.

I agree Lorraine. I want to read books that may be banned just to see whats so bad about them. I also agree about the Laura Ingalls books and Huckleberry Finn. When those books were written it was based on how people felt at the time.

Megan (megan_morris) | 170 comments A book set in High School -
I decided to try Eleanor & Park for this week. I loved Fangirl, it was adorable so I expect Eleanor and Park to be similar.

A book with Magic -
I went with a book from the Heroes of Olympus Series by Rick Riordan. It's not really magic, it's more like powers but it's close enough that I went with it.
Half Bad bad was an ok read, but I will warn that there is a bit of violence in it. Other than that I haven't read a lot of magic books lately.

A book Based or Turned into a TV show -
I can think of quite a few here but I can't vouch for how appropriate they are...
Vampire Diaries The Awakening and The Struggle If I remember correctly it's good however, not at all like the show.
The 100 as Jessica said above, though I have not read it, the show is good.
I expect there's probably a list on ŷ here with a bunch that you could look through and find something you deem appropriate.

Ella | 234 comments For a book set in high school - try Colleen Hoover's Slammed or Hopeless.

message 21: by SaraFair (new)

SaraFair Just saw your thread on here and just wanted to suggest Jim Gaffigan for a funny book. I read Food: A Love Storyand really liked it, easy reading or read while you are reading another book. His dvds are great too, nothing inappropriate. I am a Christian reader and want to broaden my horizons in book genres, but don't want to get into/waste time on any books that are explicit or full of swear words. It was all I could do to get through the Goldfinch with all the f-words, FYI. I appreciate your asking as I was having trouble with those catagories.

message 22: by Peter (last edited Mar 17, 2015 06:07AM) (new)

Peter For a book with Magic, if you have not read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, I cannont recommend it enough.

If you are a fan of fantasy, you will probably LOVE this book. It's absolutely incredible.

Also, if you're looking for something "weird" or a little off the beaten track, check out Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko. It's supernatural/magic/thriller/crime/urban....

It's a whole lot of things mashed together and has been described as Harry Potter - Russian style. Very, very good and a completely unique and original concept to magic.
