Today I've started reading it since the ebook was on the library.

I also started today, have gotten to chapter 4 so far.

It is my first book by Kazuo Ishiguro but so far I'm enjoying the flow of the read and the building of the story.

I watched the movie a couple of years back and while the details are a bit blurry I do know where the general story is going although I am interested to see how the book explains certain details as there is of course (or so I hope 😉 ) more time/space for proper exposition than in the movie.

But the first three chapters were promising in this regard especially for the relationship of the main characters. Although being a bit nebulous in certain portions seems of course part of the story I guess.

I didn't know there was a film! I'm going completely blind reading this, since I don't know anything about the author nor the book/film. I didn't read anything more, but for now is just the relationships between characters and there isn't any SF, but I'm so curious about what the donors and caretakers do...

I'm on chapter 6 and I feel that I had enough memories for now haha But it's a good book to read before bed, since I don't need to do a big effort to understand it.

How are you doing? I think that I more or less understand how Hailsham works, but want to know more.

I finally picked this one of from the library. It may be a September read for me at this point but still looking forward to it.

Nice! I'm reading it little by little, maybe you catch me on your read. It has a slow pace at first, though, but I think it's good to get immersed on the world.

Thanks for the heads up! This is my third by Ishiguro and I thinking it is a trend in his writing but I'm fascinated by how his brain works and look forward to the slow character building.

Chapter 7
(view spoiler)[ Wow. I know they said they were donors but I thought they wer art donors, not organ donors. I think it happened to me the same it happened to the Hailsham students: I didn't know what was gonna happen until they said it plainly.

So... they are some kind of copies? Maybe not humans? Maybe done in a laboratorty, and that's why they don't say anyhting about parents?
It's like having a farm for human organs, then... It's freakng weird. (hide spoiler)]

So life got in the way of my reading plans^^
I'm guessing it is still okay to post here since the thread does not seem closed or anything.
I have arrived at chapter ten now and yes chapter 7 also hit me quite hard.

(view spoiler)[ Even knowing the baseline of it it packed quite a punch, imagining being told at around 15 years of age that their sole exitstence is being organ donors. But I have to admit it also made me quite angry, not at Miss Lucy for telling them but at the rest of these childrens universe for what Kathy calls the "told not told"-part. I understand Kathys kind of nonchalance because she is telling this story from a perspective in which she had to live with the inevitability of where her live is leading for quite a long time.

But for me as a reader even though I understand that this seems the only purpose of Hailsham, the idea of raising these children and letting them grow their own dreams of what their future might be (like the boy wishing to be an actor) without ever telling them straight even though most of them will be dead by the age of 30 seems quite cruel to me.

But I am also interested in where the story goes on how the children where created (hide spoiler)]

I finally started this one!! So weird and intriguing already!

How are you doing with the book?

I have finally managed to finish and I have to say I like the writing style and the ideas and questions the story ultimately asks are quite intriguing. (view spoiler)[ Especially the discussion with Miss Emily and Madame raises interesting points regarding the morality of their world that can also easily be applied to our reality regarding the clones, the medical advances they are responsible for and the way humanity ignores the cruelty towards them (hide spoiler)]

I generally enjoyed the pace of the book although some of the revelations were made a little more disturbing by the casualness of them simply coming up in normal conversations between Kathy, Ruth and Tommy, which I guess is understandable considering that Kathy as the narrator is completely at home in this world.

I also finished. I thought it was really well done, kind of a quiet horror. Still haven't managed to process my thoughts into a review. There is just so much packed into the little book.

I definitely agree with the spoiler point.

I liked it, as you say, @Juliane, it has a lot of questions to do that can be applied now. Maybe not in humans, but what about the cosmetics tested on animals? :(
