Alex Kheimov | 3 comments Hello,

I remember reading a book about teens? going into a magical world from the real world around the 2010s.

It was about returning a sleeping queen to her kingdom.
They had to cross a forest where these creatures would follow behind you talking like humans but you couldn’t look back or they’d kill you. The voices these creatures imitated are said to be the ones who looked.

There was also this race of people who were conscious while asleep. Like their hearing and other senses were better while asleep. It was custom to knock lightly when you would want to enter a house as to not startle them if they were sleeping.
These people would go into the real world and find people who were like them in what was called “the wandering day.

Spoilers
It ended with a sort of last stand against their enemy who has been wiping them out. When the main characters get to where the queen rules they’re informed that this is the last remaining city of their kind. They had built a wall in the city which was thought to be impossible to break.
It ends with the enemy rolling up with cannons. The queen says they won’t expect a charge and that’s how I think it ends.

Some more details:
In the last city someone says they were in the US? Air Force
I remember the beginning of the book being in a sort of catacombs or underground.

Thanks for reading and the help!

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5391 comments Dormia by Jake Halpern looks like a match. The sleeping queen is called Lady Spack:
"That coffin belongs to the so-called Queen of the Loafers a woman named Spack who sleeps in it all day long," explained Resuza. "They say she's awake for less than ten minutes each day. She does everything in her sleep eats, walks, talks, even swims "

Still, Spack dreamed. Most of all, she dreamed of participating in Great Wandering Day.

The creatures that mimic voices and you musn't look back at are called Straszydlo:
"Never look back," both Rosalina and Masha said at once.
"That doesn't sound like such a big deal," said Bilblox.
"That's what they all say," replied Rosalina with a dark chuckle. "But just you wait until you have a Straszydlo right on your heels so close that you can feel its steamy breath on the back of your neck. It happened to me once never again!" Rosalina took another swig of finklegrog. Her eyes blazed with the heat of the fire.
"The worst is when they start talking to you," added Masha. "The Straszydlo can mimic the sounds that they hear, like parrots. Sometimes what they say is just harmless nonsense like, What time is it? But often what they mimic are people's last words you know, what they said just before the Straszydlo finish them off."
