Carolien (carolien_s) | 891 comments Does anyone have recommendations for short stories by female authors? My short story reading skewed about two thirds male in 2022 and I want to add more female authors in that category, but I'm starting the year with 4 collections by male authors which is not a good sign. I've got Seven Gothic Tales planned, but need some more.

I took a look at your short story shelf and these are a few I can think of right now

The Collected Stories of Katherine Mansfield
The Collected Short Stories of Virginia Woolf
The Birds and Other Stories by Daphne du Maurier or Don't Look Now and Other Stories
The Wind's Twelve Quarters by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson
A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O'Connor

I love Kate Chopin but couldn't find any collected works.

I agree wholeheartedly with all of those, would like to add in Edith Wharton and Willa Cather :).

Thank you! I like Ursula K Le Guin and the library has this one! And The Birds came out of a box yesterday, so will add it to the pile.

message 26: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5330 comments Wow--these are such great suggestions!

One I think is lesser-known that I liked: Incidental Music: Stories by Françoise Sagan

And I've only read the title story, but bet this would be fun:
The Ballad of the Sad Café and Other Stories by Carson McCullers

I'm so excited you'll be reading Seven Gothic Tales. So good!

Sue K H (sky_bluez) | 3676 comments Great lists, Carolein. It looks like you have a good list of woman authors of short stories. Also, I like to go into the group's bookshelf by short stories and see which ones I've missed.

I need to work in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day on one of my challenges too.
I'm so glad you listed out so many second place or worse books, it will be much easier to come back over here to look. In fact, I may need to copy those over in the event that you delete them!

Hi Sue

I'll keep the second place or worst list. I just add to it at times and then copy it across for the next year!

I already copied it over and took off the ones I've read. That's a great idea to save it for next year!

Carolien (carolien_s) | 891 comments I've completed Challenge 7, Expanding your horizons and am halfway with the genre and century challenges. I've got more hope for the Old/New challenge this year.

Does anyone have suggestions for female African- American authors who were published in the 1930's and is NOT Zora Neale Hurston? Failing that, some male ones would be useful.

message 41: by Laurie (last edited Mar 12, 2023 05:44AM) (new)

Laurie | 1881 comments Carolien, I've read two books that fit your criteria but only one by a woman. I read Comedy: American Style by Jessie Redmon Fauset. The book by a male author was Black No More by George S. Schuyler. A few others by men that I have not read are Not Without Laughter by Langston Hughes, The Conjure-Man Dies: A Mystery Tale of Dark Harlem by Rudolph Fisher, and Infants of the Spring by Wallace Thurman.
