Stephanie (stephanie-somanybooks) | 719 comments Hello Bookworms!

I hope you all have had a good reading year and are ready to enjoy an even better year in 2023!

SPECIAL NOTE: The survey will close a little earlier this year, December 23rd. So let's get this party started! I'll be closing this thread on December 16th so I can get the survey setup and sent out for voting by December 19th.

For all who would like to participate in 2023, please start sending your suggestions for themes, genres, etc. for both the year-long challenges and monthly specials to this thread. I will collect your responses and create the survey as we have done in the past and we'll all vote on the ones we'd like to see for 2023. You guys are all so creative and enthusiastic, let's see if we can come up with some new ideas, too!

For the BONUS challenges, tell us how you liked the Checklist challenge. Should we keep it again for next year? What about Book BINGO or the Book Chain, do we want to do one of those again? Any other ideas? What about non-point challenges, like the ABC challenge, do we want to keep one of those going for 2023?

As always, we appreciate your participation in this laid back group! If you have any questions, suggestions or other feedback, please contact me and Connie. We love hearing from our Bookworms!

Wanda (callie4) | 325 comments Thank you Stephanie and Connie for all the work you do for this group!

My suggestions are:
Space opera (Murderbot, Expanse, etc)
Paranormal
Speculative fiction
Books in a Series
Mysteries

For monthly:
Books with boy, girl, man, woman in title
Books with word light or source of light (sun, moon, stars) in title

I liked the Checklist. It had a lot of variety and no pressure to complete entire list to earn points.

Ann-Marie (amsjob) | 180 comments Thank you for this wonderful group!

I have a few suggestions for next year.
- set in snow-ice-winter time
- sea stories
- rereads
- academic setting
- historical novels
- set on islands
- sci-fi
- prize winners (for example booker, nobel, hugo, edward)
- crime/mystery/thriller of course

I am liking a lot of the suggestions that I have seen so far! I will add a few of my own (possibly more to come later)

- something to do with various decades ( maybe this could be a special challenge starting in 1850 - 1859 and working up by decades to 2020 - 2023
- a book word in the title
- genres: historical fiction, thriller/suspense, cozy mysteries, contemporary romance, sci -fi, nonfiction
- a plant in the title

I like the checklist challenge. ( I would be happy to create a new list for 2023)

I like the ABC challenge as well - maybe be switch it to the authors this year - first or last name

I'm sure I might think of more and add them later.
I am hoping to do better with my numbers next year. I have been working on trying to finish off a few series and unfortunately they don't seem to fit the categories.

I just had an idea and was coming to post it in the chat before I forgot haha, in the middle of watching the soccer game. Apparently I sensed the idea chat had been started for 2023 haha

It's an idea for the ABC challenge--maybe use places next year to switch it up from titles and authors?? Fictional or not but like tattooist of Auschwitz could be for the letter A and Chronicles of Narnia could be for the letter N.

New ideas (i think):
I liked the "ing" books category we did this year so here's a similar one: Double double - two sets of double letters in the title (or author?)
Books related to [insert home country here] - e.g. canadian author, set in canada, non fiction of canada, canada in the title, etc. (or it could be any country and the reader gets to choose their country and read 5 books related in various ways to that one country)
Linda suggested "nothing in the title" last year which i thought was amusing and a fun idea!!
Books with twins
Books with gods
Books with pirates
Cowboys
Aliens
Books with clothes in the title
Books with revenge
Food in the title
Spy stories
Books of rescue stories
Books set in the 1800s
Books in space
Books with a question in the title
Robots
Books with ‘s in the title (apostrophe-S)

Old faves:
Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ choice winners/nominees (any year)
TBR list for over a year
rereads (preferably a year long challenge instead of just monthly)
mythical creature
retellings
wildcard
books with magic
books you own
mystery/suspense/thriller
sci fi
graphic novel
tv/movie adaptation
I liked the bonus challenge this year and also liked bingo from previous years if we want to switch it up

I'm seeing some great ideas! I don't have many this year (grad school is using every bit of my brain), but I'll go ahead and list them. Some are similar to others posted. :) Some are repeat suggestions from previous years, because I still like 'em, dang it!

5 books title that are consecutive alphabetically (choose any 5 letters in a row)
a mini book chain - just 5 books
related to books in some way - book on the cover, character is an author or other book-related profession, a retelling of a different book,
take place in 5 different centuries (5 books, not 1)
character with a disability
single word titles
books set during your lifetime
Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ award - nominees and winners from 2022

I'm wishy-washy on the ABC and checklist challenge. I'd prefer to do Book Bingo, but I'll participate in anything.

I love this idea of using a place name instead of author or title. I think it would be fun.

Lots of good ideas already. I do like the place names as the bonus A to Z challenge. I think I prefer the Bingo challenge over the checklist. I think it makes doing a mini challenge (5 in a row) feel more satisfying than just doing a few from the checklist.

I'd love to see one over 1000 page book somewhere (not 5) as it always challenges me to tackle at least one of my big books on my TBR.

I still like my "nothing in the title" but understand it can be confusing. A variable of that could be to put that challenge in December and make it "Nothing that could fit in the past 11 month's prompts"

I also really like the 5 books by the same author.

I also like the mini book chain that Rhonda suggested. The year long was just to derailing for books I wanted to read, but a it was still a lot of fun.

And let me also say how much I appreciate Connie and Stephanie for all the work they do on this. We really appreciate you! The Bookworm Challenge is the Best !

Wanda, I think we could go sit in the library together for an entire year and never read the same book! LOL

Oh Linda, who doesn't love Murderbot! :)

I do love Murderbot! And the crazy thing is, that if we were sitting in the library all year together, we would pass each other great reads in other genres. The wonderful thing about the Bookworm challenge is that you can fit a lot of books that you normally read into prompts, but it also broadens our horizons with others.

I take full credit for introducing you to Murderbot! :) You probably would have never read it otherwise. Let's hear it for sharing the books we love with others! (New Murderbot in 2023, btw. Yay!)

message 14: by Turtlefrog (new)

Turtlefrog | 93 comments I'm fairly new to this group but have really enjoyed it. Here are my suggestions:

I'd really like to see the TBR over a year back and books by the same author.

I also enjoyed the BONUS challenge and wouldn't mind if that one came back. The ABC challenge was ok. Although I really like the idea of doing the ABC challenge with author's names instead of book names.

Not sure if you've done a Who, What, Where, When, & Why challenge before. But maybe we can read a book with these words in the title. Total of 5 books (one for each word).

Books with short stories

A decades challenge. Maybe read 5 books that are all set in different decades. Or pick a decade and read 5 books that were published in that decade.

Stephanie (stephanie-somanybooks) | 719 comments Thank you, Bookworms! So many good ideas so far. Keep them coming. I'll leave this thread open until Friday night. I'll get the poll up for next week, starting Sunday or Monday.

Connie and I really appreciate all of you, too! We can't do any of this without your support.
