Lillie | 1546 comments I really like reading across the genres, so I'll keep it the same as I have in the past. But this time around I'll limit myself to 4 (except maybe mystery) in each genre plus add 3 genres I'm normally not comfortable with. It's a challenge after all. Still trying to decide whether to make a separate list for tomes. Nothing is set in stone until it has to be ;-)

These look great, Lillie! I like that you limited yourself to 4 books in each genre, to start with.

Good luck, Lillie!

Lillie | 1546 comments Thanks everyone. I’ve been working on the lists since September. Can’t wait to start. I’m excited and a bit nervous with the new categories of Poetry, Interconnected Short Stories, and Classics. Not a big reader of any of those, so it’ll be interesting. Now I just need to finish the 2022 list

Lea (leaspot) | 3458 comments This looks like a great list. I have read hardly any of these books. I have read Klara and the Sun (can't wait to see what you get out of that book...), Jamaica Inn and The Enchanted April, and I have Call Us What We Carry on my Individual Challenge this year. I hope we both like it. Best of luck!

Thanks Lea! I'm going to try to read Klara and the Sun in January. We'll see what kind of mood I'm in, lol. I've been eyeing The Enchanted April for a while now. And, since reading Rebecca this summer, I'm very interested in reading more of Daphne du Maurier and decided on Jamaica Inn as the one to start with.

Have decided to listen to the poets, well, the ones still alive that have audiobooks...

I'm also interested in reading more du Maurier, but not sure where to go. I loved Rebecca (one of my top 10 books), but did not find Jamaica Inn to be of the same caliber, so I'm not sure what to read next. I hope you love Jamaica Inn and wonder what the heck I'm talking about. :-)

Thanks! I enjoy reading across genres and have been doing my challenges in a similar fashion for the past several years. But I had more books listed in each category. Felt slightly constrained this year and needed to mix it up a bit. Added a couple new categories and less books listed. So I still challenge myself but have the time and space for mood reading and not feel guilty. Long explanation for needed a slight change, lol

Thanks Martha! Leslie Jordan has 2 books out? I’m so excited! And sad at the same time. I’ll be missing his humor on social media. He really did make quarantine more bearable.

Oh no! You’re making me second guess Jamaica Inn. It was a toss up between My Cousin Rachel and Jamaica Inn.

I three starred it, which means that I liked it, but not nearly as much as Rebecca. If I recall correctly, I hated the ending. It's possible that I read it wrong, though, as most of my GR friends list really liked the ending. So, you'll probably be fine.

My only Daphne du Maurier was Rebecca, which is one of my big favorites and one of the handful books I've ever re-read. So you can imagine, I absolutely loved it. I have these other 2 on my TBR, but haven't read any of them yet. I hope you'll enjoy whichever one you pick!

Martha (marthas48) | 766 comments I enjoyed JI, but not as much as My Cousin Rachel. She writes the BEST opening paragraphs in her books. Really sets the tone, Her short stories are good, too.

Lillie | 1546 comments Martha and Lea, you've convinced to try My Cousin Rachel first (not that you had to try too hard, lol)

Have updated Classics. Added what we chose for RL Book Club. And I threw everything out for 2023 Releases and picked 4 new books. Three new-to-me authors and one author that I've read and enjoyed but in sci-fi not fantasy.

I won't be reading for a while, maybe in the summer? Maybe you'll be able to pick up at that time?

Lillie | 1546 comments Ok, some changes made under the wire. Added 3 books (The Measure, The Twist of a Knife, Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers) and changed Martha Wells' new 2023 Witch King to her new Murderbot release System Collapse.

Lillie | 1546 comments Book #1 How Y'all Doing? Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived by Leslie Jordan How Y'all Doing?: Misadventures and Mischief from a Life Well Lived 4.5 stars audiobook

Really love his voice, both as a narrator and storyteller. I’m sorry that I came in late to the game. Just as I was beginning to appreciate him, he tragically died a couple of months ago. He didn’t shy away from the good or bad in his life as some actors do in a memoir. He let us into his life. It was funny and sad and sweet. 4.5/5 stars

Book #2 A Very Merry Bromance (Bromance Book Club, #5) by Lyssa Kay Adams A Very Merry Bromance 4 stars audiobook

No 5 in the Bromance series about a men’s book club who read romances. It’s very sweet and, being a romance, has some steamy scenes. I enjoy these books. They’re a great respite from the realities of our world. Liked the romance between Colton and Gretchen.

Lillie | 1546 comments Book #3 Mrs. Jeffries Takes Stock by Emily Brightwell Mrs. Jeffries Takes Stock 3.5 stars audiobook

4th book in the Mrs. Jeffries series. I really like Mrs. Jeffries, the housekeeper of Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard. She and the rest of his staff help him in solving murders behind his back. Love how the characters interact with each other.

Book #4 The Measure by Nikki Erlick The Measure 2.5 stars audiobook

I really really wanted to like this book. Such an interesting premise, boxes have started appearing to all adults 22 years old and older. The boxes hold strings of different lengths. Which tell how long people live. It's very much about the world we live in, the prejudices detailed. It should've been so much more than it was. It's so funny, because I believe in the politics of the book. But the author failed to keep my interest. Too many characters were crammed in it. In the end, I didn't care what happened to any of them. Bottom line, I hated the author's writing. Gave it the stars I did because I did like the premise and the potential.

Book #5 The Twist of a Knife (Hawthorne and Horowitz Mystery, #4) by Anthony Horowitz The Twist of a Knife 4 stars print book

#4 in the Hawthorne and Horowitz murder series. I really enjoy how the author of these books have written himself into these books. This time out, Horowitz is accused of the murder of the theater critic who panned his play. Loved the interaction between the private detective and the author. Fun outing.

Currently reading one poem every couple of days by Edna St. Vincent Millay from her Renascence and Other Poems collection.

Lillie | 1546 comments Book #6 Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou Disorientation 4 stars audiobook

A phd candidate is struggling to finish her dissertation when she comes across something that could blow everything up. We follow Ingrid, the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, as she deals with out right racism towards Asian Americans as well as internalized racism on a university campus in NY. At first I thought this was going to be a light comedic read but it turned out to be so much more nuanced. Kept me engaged throughout.

Lillie | 1546 comments Book #7 Mrs. Jeffries on the Ball by Emily Brightwell Mrs. Jeffries on the Ball 3.5 stars audiobook

I'm really enjoying this series. Another fun one. Realized that this series is over 35 books long. A fact that makes me happy cause these books are a great palate cleanser.

Book #8 The Murder of Mr. Wickham by Claudia Gray The Murder of Mr. Wickham 4 stars audiobook

The author has taken Jane Austin's world and put all the characters from her books in one place (Emma and George Knightley, Elizabeth and Darcy, the Wentworths, the Bertrams, Colonel and Marianne Brandon). Mr. Wickham from Pride and Prejudice is the murder victim and the son of Darcy and Elizabeth investigates the death that has taken place at a month long house party. Fun. A second one should come out this year. Looking forward to it.

Lillie | 1546 comments Book #9 Coq au Vin (A Nanette Hayes Mystery #2) by Charlotte Carter Coq au Vin 4 stars print book

Number 2 in series of 3. It’s listed as a mystery but I’m not sure I’d classify it as such. There is a mystery at the center of it (finding Aunt Vivian) but it’s really more about Nan meandering through her trip to Paris. It’s a little bit romance, a little bit about jazz, about street musicians, a little bit love story of Paris, and a little bit murder mystery. Not Aunt Vic’s murder but someone connected with her. If you’re looking for a straight mystery, this isn’t it. But if you’re looking for a good book to read on a rainy day, try this.
