For this one I think I'm going with The War of the End of the World by Mario Vargas-Llosa of Peru ('81). He has four List books.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily | 9 comments I've picked Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky (Russia), but it feels like cheating since the book itself is set far from the Pacific (Saint Petersberg).

But also I'm really enjoying it, so never mind :)

Tashii (tashypnw) I think I am going to read Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en.

Nike | 55 comments I haven't seen this challenge until now and I love to participate. I didn't do good on the 2022 challenge so let's see if I can do better this year.

I wonder if there are any lists with books that suits every prompt?

Or do I simply need to go through the entire 1 300 books and google to find out what fits?

There are probably lists on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ that would help with some topics, but you would still need to make sure the book was on the Boxall list. The best way is to read through the suggestions group members are posting for each task and will continue to post through the year. You should also download the spreadsheet for the Boxall list. It contains the country for each book and you can sort by country.

I haven't found any. There are a few set on these islands but the authors are from different places, so they don't count.

There are 13 list books by Japanese authors- 17 if you count Ishiguro, who was born there.
Japan is considered Asian rather than Pacific island but is in the Pacific Rim.

I wouldn't, Ishiguro, to my knowledge, never even wrote in Japanese even if some of his most famous novels do take place there.

Can't say I'm surprised but it is really a shame. All list authors from Oceania I've thus far encountered are white, too.

Nocturnalux | 465 comments I'll be going with A Cidade e os Cães by Mario Vargas Llosa; known in English by a title that has zero to do with the original, to the point I had to dig around to even find out what book it actually was.

Mario Vargas-Llosa of Peru has four List books, two of which I've read before. I wanted to read his The War of the End of the World but it isn't available from my libraries for at least a month so I'll read his The Cubs and Other Stories instead. It's a short one.

I read it last November. It's published in Spanish as
La ciudad y los perros (The City and the Dogs) but has the English title The Time of the Hero. The "dogs" is the nickname of a group of military school cadets. Vargas Llosa attended military school in his youth. I don't think the English title fits it, I don't know who chose it.

He probably didn't, it's not up to authors or translators to pick the titles of the translation: it is the publisher's.

Portuguese translations of the Spanish are very close (and even from other other languages, but in particular Spanish) and vice-versa, so in this case it is a literal translation.

English language translations take severe liberties with titles, way too often. I mean, Saramago's Memorial do Convento is known in English as Baltasar and Blimunda. You do not need to even know a word of Portuguese to tell this is not a close translation.

To the point I had no clear idea what this book even was supposed to be when I stumbled on the list. I thought it was some underrated Saramago title I'd never heard of, he is a very prolific author and while I am conversant with the names of his books, there could very well be one I was not familiar with.

The London-born English author Andrea Levy was of primarily Afro-Jamaican descent- her Small Island was on the 1001 list only in the 2008 edition. I liked the book and it was made into a pretty good movie. Zadie Smith who has 2 list books (White Teeth and On Beauty) is mixed race. Her mother was Jamaican. Zadie was born in London and her father was English. I don't know of any others so far.

None are from Oceania, though. No Aboriginal authors.

I ended up reading The War of the End of the World by Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru. The story is set in the backlands of Brazil however. It's somewhat overlong but a good story.
