New for 2023, we have the Decades Challenge! For this one, you get to choose horror books based on the decade they were published in. You can choose as many decades, and as many books per decade, as you wish (ex. ...60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's...).

Sign up here: /challenges/...

Mark the chosen decade, and the book(s) you've read for it here. You'll want to set aside a shelf on your "bookshelf" (ex. "Decades-Challenge") in order for ŷ to count it.

Have fun! We can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Elke (misspider) | 651 comments My spot - want to read some of my old paperbacks for this one.

Have to think some more on how I will approach this challenge without just listing all horror books I‘ll read next year by pub date.
Definitely want to focus on some older titles.

Marie | 3995 comments This sounds really cool! Claiming this as my spot. :)

I am not sure yet what I have in decades on my kindle so going to research it and then add in my decades on here. Decided to do 10. I found some cool stuff that I didn't know I had. That is what happens when you have 5000+ books in the cloud. lol
Going to have two books under some of the years. :)

10/10

1800's
(1887): The Canterville Ghost - read 8/10/2023

1900's
(1909): The Ghost Pirates - read 1/12/23

1970's
(1978): Devil in the Darkness - read 5/5/23

1980's
(1986) The Hungry Moon - read 2/4/23

1990's
(1993): The Summoning - read 3/22/2023
(1994): A Room For The Dead - read 6/16/2023

2000's
(2004): Dark Corner - read 7/8/23
(2007): Heart-Shaped Box - read 1/19/23

2020's
(2020): The House of a Hundred Whispers - read 6/26/2023
(2021): Paradise Club - read 7/14/2023

I will check them off as I read them. :)

Anja Henriksen | 145 comments my spot - interesting challenge :)
I've changed my entry from 13 to 16 as I thought I wanted it to start at 1900, but looking for stories I found so many earlier ones, and I might go even further back as the year goes lol. now it's looking like this: one for each decade from 1870-2020.
I'm sure I'm going to have some struggles with the mid-19century, but I'm keeping the goal as for one of each, to push myself a bit to read something I normally would steer completely far away from :D

1870s
1880s
1890s An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
1900s The Ash-Tree
1910s
1920s
30s
40s Animal Farm
50s Fahrenheit 451
60s
70s Fluke
80s The God Project
90s Joyride
00s Depraved
10s Tell Nobody
20s Q

I have chosen to read horror short stories instead of horror books though ... One short story, or novelette/novella, for each decade from 1900-2020 ... Hope this is not cheating 🤔🤭

Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and The Road Through the Wall were both published in the 1940s.

For the 1920s, H.P. Lovecraft has a slew of work published then, including The Dunwich Horror and The Call of Cthulhu.

Thank you for the suggestions, Netanella! I've already read The Lottery (classic!) and am reading The Haunting of Hill House for the 1950s but will definitely add The Road Through the Wall on my To Read shelf. I'm reading Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness for the 1930s (love me some Lovecraft!), so I'm still a little stumped. The link at the top is only for the mods to change something with the set up of the discussion thread. What you're looking for, to edit your own and add books, you should see an "edit" button on the bottom right side beneath your message (this will be the same for ALL your messages, only YOU can edit them). Press edit, and then you will have to scroll up usually to find your comment. It will be in a box that enables you to change or add to it. When you've finished, save it, and it will be the "new" message in it's place. That's how you add books as you go along. :)

Zen (zzmarie) | 39 comments I think instead of starting with a set of dates, I'm going to start with the most recent decade and work my way backwards and see how far I get with a minimum of 12. That would be one month at the very least, but I'm hoping to do more. I'm not counting re-reads, but do have my first few planned out.

Found it! I had to switch to "desktop site" in my browser (I'm on my phone) and now the option to edit shows up. I've been having the hardest time navigating GR because it's so different between the app, browser, and actual desktop site. Thanks for your help!

No problem! Personally, I don't even bother with the app, except to read messages. There's too much I can't find/do--it's so much easier for me with the laptop. :)

Netanella | 526 comments Agreed! For me, the app is useless and I deleted it from my phone. Don't want to waste the space. If I need mobile access, I'll do the web-based version on my phone until I get home to a laptop or tablet.

Badseedgirl | 1030 comments So question, I have included Fatal Vision as my 80's read. This is a true crime novel, but I consider the the murder of a pregnant mom and two small children to be a horror story. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

My opinion is any true crime novel is true horror.
