There are many options here, but I'd say you can begin with these two. For a brief overview of the history of physics (which contains an excellent Further Reading section), take a look at The History of Physics: A Very Short Introduction. For a book that is similar to the book you read in that it highlights important ideas and their history, take a look at Great Ideas in Physics. These two are a good beginning.

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson; this book discusses some history behind physics, as well as some of the histories behind other scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, and paleontology.
A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking; Hawking explains some aspects of physics as well as the history behind them.
Relativity: The General and Special Theory by Albert Einstein; if you want to learn how Einstein himself came up with the theory of relativity, you can read this book! I do believe that some background knowledge in physics and relativity might be helpful, although I think it should be pretty easy to understand if you pay careful attention to what he is saying.
In Search of Schrodinger's Cat: Quantum Physics and Reality by John Gribbin; I have never read this book, but based on the reviews and synopsis, I think it does discuss a little bit of history behind quantum mechanics. You might enjoy this one. :)
Happy reading!
