Rebecca | 37 comments Hey guys--
I've been MIA from the goodreads community for awhile, so I didn't realize we finally have the ability to make and sort folders for our group discussions--woohoo! A big thanks to symbol for messaging me about it, otherwise I may have never noticed.

I made a few folders for solved books: Children's/YA SOLVED, Adult Fiction SOLVED and Nonfiction SOLVED. Let me know how this system works for you and we can tweak it if we need to.

I also added this Group Suggestions folder, for... (you guessed it!) suggestions to make the group run a little more smoothly.

I look forward to hearing from you!
:) Rebecca

Angel (mnemosyne) | 25 comments So once a question is solved, it's then going to be moved to the appropriate SOLVED folder? Who does that, the person asking the question, or the group moderator(s)?

message 3: by rivka (new)

rivka Probably whichever gets to it first. ;)

message 4: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Well, if the person asking for help finding the book, finds the book, when they post their thank you/correct book found, I'd think right then they could move the thread to the correct solved folder.

I realize some people do not know that they're even supposed to put SOLVED in their topic when a book is found, but for those of us who do I think it would be considerate to put the thread in the appropriate solved folder. Too much for Rebecca the moderator to do if most of us don't do that.

message 5: by Dina (new)

Dina | 28 comments Rebecca,

I just discovered we are to label found titles as SOLVED. I attempted to do that with my post 'NF author bullied in HS/Wants to go to reunion'. The title is Please Stop Laughing at Me. I don't think I did it correctly though. I hate to mess up your order, so please help me fix this. Thanks!

message 6: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) There are so many titles in unsolved. It becomes difficult to add a title or browse to see if you can help. How about a one year time limit. Then the person posting can re-add it if they want.

message 7: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Ed, Have you noticed a lot of unsolved threads that were started over a year ago?

message 8: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) Lisa, I counted 72 more than one year old. That's almost three full pages. Actually, the cut-off could even be less than one year and then put in the archives so if there is a late thought the original request could be accessed.

message 9: by Lisa (last edited Nov 22, 2008 06:43PM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Ed, Ugh. I'm not sure if any of the other 3 moderators are participating here and I do not have time to do this in the near future. Sometime next year perhaps. Possibly if a thread with many links I could work on it at some point then.

I would want all threads to continue to be available forever; the solved ones are a great resource and it's not uncommon for very old solved ones to get solved.

Edit: If you (or anybody) wants to work on these sooner, I suggest messaging Rebecca and requesting moderator status.

Edit again: The top showing ones in the unsolved are at least the ones with the most recent messages.

message 10: by rivka (new)

rivka I don't see what the problem is. When someone adds a new one, it goes to the top. If someone posts to an existing one, it also goes to the top.

If you don't want to browse ones past the first page, don't. Problem solved! ;)

message 11: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Rivka,

Thank you. :-)

That's how I look at it too.

And it's already a big job to move solved threads to the various solved folders. Which is gratifying and is necessary to keep things here organized.

message 12: by Ed (new)

Ed (ejhahn) Rivka,

Good point. I guess I'm too obsessive to stop at the first page.

message 13: by Sarah (last edited Nov 23, 2008 12:17PM) (new)

Sarah I've got some time today to go through some of the older unsolved posts and sorting them into the right folders if you'd like my help. I just took a peek and found a few that had been clearly solved. The others are probably abandoned or simply forgotten.

ETA: I know I'm not an active commenter, but I do read this group every day.

message 14: by Sarah (last edited Nov 23, 2008 12:35PM) (new)

Sarah Lisa-- I sent a message to Rebecca, but her profile says she hasn't been active since September. Is she the only one who can assign moderators?

ETA: Nevermind! Rebecca must be reading through email too, because she got back to me right away. I'll start sorting those I can figure out!

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Sarah,

I've been trying to keep up with the solved but I wait for the original poster to come back to say it's the right book - otherwise at most I put them in the probably solved folder. I realize some posters never come back to check.

I think any moderator can add another moderator but I still think of this as Rebecca's group so I'd leave that up to her.

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah You did a great job on keeping up with those solved posts! I only found a couple where the original poster had said it was solved but hadn't moved it. I did find some that had a lot of really good suggestions, and I moved the older ones to the Possibly Solved folder.

I wish I knew more of the books though...my memory is bad enough that I can't remember what I read last year!

message 17: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Sarah,

Thanks for finding those I'd missed.

I also saw some that needed moving to the possibly solved folder but the ones I moved some of the original posters thought the thread had been deleted because they couldn't find it, so mixed feelings about losing it. Maybe we need an addition to the group's description letting members to look in both the unsolved and possibly solved folders for their queries.

What do you think? What do all members think?

message 18: by Slumbering Rose (new)

Slumbering Rose (slumberingrose) | 33 comments Yeah. Something should be done. Maybe it should be put in the How To Post thing, and then a reference can be made in the group info to read that.

BTW, if I could be of any help...just let me know. I mean, I could add books to the shelf at least.

message 19: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Rose, I've been meaning to post about adding books to the shelves, something I did for ages (and do with my own books: that I find or help others find) but haven't for ages.

If you - and all of you - can add found books to shelves that would be a huge help and much appreciated!

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments I just put (in bold) a request to do some of the above putting it in the group description for now. Rebecca wrote a really great sticky with this information plus more but I suspect most members don't read that. I know many don't read group descriptions either but it's one more place posters might see it. Ok for a short term solution anyway.

I am sorry, it has been awhile since I was ABLE to get in here....and it has been a VERY long time since I was able to check on the book I was looking for...but I can't seem to find it....

message 22: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Mike, I'm not sure what you're asking, but if you're trying to find where you posted here, go to members, find your name, click on however many comments you've made, and a list of the comments you've made in this group will show. If/when you find the one you're looking for, click on that topic title and you'll get to the correct thread.

message 23: by Mike (new)

Mike (3lan) | 46 comments Thank you Lisa.

message 24: by Mir (new)

Mir | 802 comments I figured that out right after browsing back through pages trying to find my posting. Sigh.

Yes, There's so much at Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ we're all continually learning new ways to do things, how to do things, finding new or existing features, etc. I'm glad you did figure it out though, Miriam.

message 26: by George (new)

George Avgeris | 36 comments moving to 'solved' is hard to understand, with respect.

Perhaps create a button that would do it?

thx!

George, As I explained before, there is no way to create a button. These boards are the infrastructure of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ and we have to do it the way that we do it.

I think that you'll get used to this way.

Most seem to find it easy enough.

Once you've done it a few times it will be a quick process and seem like second nature, at least I hope so.

message 28: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments George,

You can make a suggestion for buttons over at the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Feedback group. Use the questions and suggestions folder if you post a message about this there.

message 29: by HJ (new)

HJ I don't know if this has been considered and rejected before, but I wonder if we should start grouping books by type, instead of having each book query be its own folder, so that on our Home pages (where we see see all the groups which we follow) we see a list of the queries until we run out of space.

I ask this because I have the impression that there are many more new queries than there used to be, and I am missing books which I might be able to help on because they're lost among all those I know I can't help on. There are huge numbers of fantasy books - I never read them and can't help. Ditto YA.

I know they're often identified as fantasy or YA in the title (or it's apparent from the title description) and so I don't have to waste time opening each one, but the point I'm making is that there are so many of them that the others get lost among them and never seen because they go off the bottom of the visible threads.

Periodically I do open up the Group page and check down the list, but I think it would benefit everyone if books were grouped together, so that one could open up e.g. Historical Romance or Mystery, and check the unsolved threads in there, and ignore Fantasy and YA. I think that there's a greater chance of the query being solved because its more likely to be seen by those who know the book.

I know you're having to work within the constraints of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, and maybe that doesn't give you enough layers?

Caroline (caro7) Hj wrote: "I don't know if this has been considered and rejected before, but I wonder if we should start grouping books by type, instead of having each book query be its own folder, so that on our Home pages..."

I agree completely with this. I think the group could really benefit from more folders. Posts are getting bumped off the main page much too quickly right now.

message 31: by Beverlyc (new)

Beverlyc Absolutely! I enjoy reading in hopes that I'll be some help, but the fantasy, YA, and children's books seem to be dominating the queries right now, and I'm no help at all!

message 32: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) We have gotten awfully popular. You make good points.

Two things: seekers who care 'bump' their threads, so if you don't see it this time around you might next time, and if you have to dig to find, well, they probably don't care anymore ...

and: there are so many queries we volunteer moderators are swamped as is, and making folders would be quite a chore, especially at this late date. If any of you care enough to take on the task, and can vow to do your darndest to commit for at least several months, please send me a PM.

I agree with Cheryl.

Other things to consider:

* People already make errors about posting in the Unsolved Folder. Adding numerous Genre Folders would be confusing.

* I like the mish-mash of genres. I just kind of browse through them, even if I know I'm practically useless on Romance books. I share in the satisfaction of a book found and returned to its seeker.

* Genres can be confusing. One person's Romance is another person's Western. Where is the line drawn between Science Fiction and Fantasy?

message 34: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thanks Kate. Those are actually very good reasons not to get involved in details.

I still like the idea of somehow doing something to be a little more organized so we can be more efficiently helpful. I just have no guess what would actually work.

message 35: by HJ (new)

HJ In message 29 I wandered if we should start grouping books by type, instead of having each book query be its own folder so that on our Home pages (where we see see all the groups which we follow) we see a list of the queries until we run out of space.

I have become completely frustrated because the situation has worsened, and fantasy and YA books seem to drown out any queries on which I may be able to help. So I've decided to leave the group.
