BJ (bjlillis) | 50 comments I posted this in the old collections, anthologies, magazines thread, where I was encouraged to start a new thread for my question!

I have been reading more short fiction lately, and I'm sort of amazed by how many magazines there are publishing new scifi! I just discovered Fusion Fragment, and the first issue I read,
No. 15, was really excellent! I'm a long-time reader of Asimov's (which I get in print) and I've dipped in and out of Clarkesworld and a few other magazines, but I'm curious how many people here follow the scifi magazine scene? Do you have opinions about where the best work is being published, what to watch, how to figure out what magazines have what kinds of personalities? I find it all a little overwhelming, I must say, although it seems like there is a plethora of good work out there!

Kaia | 568 comments I really love Uncanny, and a number of stories published there have won awards in the last few years (including two recent Nebula Award winners). (Uncanny has sci fi, fantasy, poetry, and essays.) You can read issues for free from their website, but subscribers have access to them first. I support them through their annual Kickstarter, which gives you a year's worth of issues in ebook form.

I also regularly listen to Escape Pod, which is a free (listener-supported) sci fi podcast. They release a new story every week. Not quite the same as a magazine, but it's a great way to access new stories - especially if you like audiobooks - and a lot of the stories are quite good.

Sarah Connell (sarahconnell) | 312 comments I get Fantasy and Sci Fi in print - it’s good 9 times out of 10 and I like the punny comics.

Just started reading Lightspeed and really enjoying their voice - it’s quirky, not too dark or hard sci fi, and usually very out of the box.

Mary Nova (authormarynova) | 1 comments Wow! I'll have to check Fusion Fragment out. It's like when I found out Netflix has a Watch Movies Under 90 Minutes section

I haven't listened to escape pod in a few years! I sort of forgot about them... I guess I've been doing less driving! I'm not really a fan of audio books but I do enjoy short fiction podcasts. I would sometimes listen to the horror one too, Pseudopod! Just checked out Uncanny. Their nonfiction looks really interesting too, actually!

I have read Lightspeed before! I don't think I realized that Fantasy and Science Fiction still published new issues! Part of me would love to subscribe to a few more print magazines, because getting a new issues of Asimovs in the mail is so fun. But then I never seem to get to even half the stories in each issue, so it seems sort of silly to subscribe to more...

Sarah Connell (sarahconnell) | 312 comments I didn’t know that either about F+SF but the yearly sub comes in paperback form and I’m really enjoying it so far. It has spec poetry too which I was not familiar with and is fascinating - quirky like the Star Trek episode about the Tribbles.

DivaDiane SM | 3630 comments Oh, my! There are so many. Besides the ones already mentioned, check out (online access unless otherwise noted):

Beneath Ceaseless Skies
Strange Horizons (they also have a section of translated stories and poetry)
Interzone (British, print)
Apex
Tor.com
Subterranean
Fiyah
Apparition Lit
Augur
Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine
James Gunn's Ad Astra
Shoreline of Infinity (Scottish)

And for podcast fiction listen to:
StarShipSofa.com (the closest to a magazine with fiction and articles)
PodCastle (Fantasy)
Cast of Wonders (for a younger YA type audience, because gore and adult themes are kept to a minimum)
Tales to Terrify (Horror)

And for speculative poetry only there's:

Star*Line (*print only)
Eye to the Telescope
Illumen
Scifaikuest (micro-poetry)
Dreams & Nightmares (print or digital subscription - not online)

I think I'll leave that there. There's so much more.
