message 2: by Rosemary (last edited Aug 15, 2023 03:37PM) (new)

Rosemary | 676 comments I've read 22. I have physical copies of Platero & I and The Golden Bowl on my shelf... but since Eyeless in Gaza is a group wishlist book, that might be a good one.

message 3: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1667 comments Glad Rosemary mentioned Eyeless in Gaza, its the only one i haven't read this time so going for that lol

message 4: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 851 comments I checked earlier in the day, and I can access Eyeless in Gaza through Hoopla. So, I am thinking this will be my choice for this month.

message 5: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 22 and will go for The Last Temptation of Christ because it is on my shelf.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5047 comments Mod
I’ve read 31 counting the not included books and I am open to reading any of these
Antic Hay
Against Nature
The Unconsoled
A Pale View of Hills
Three Trapped Tigers
The Golden Bowl
The Ambassadors
What Maisie Knew
Storm of Steel
The Trial
Measuring the World.
My Hoopla doesn’t have Eyeless in Gaza so if that one gets voted in I will have to search for a source.

message 7: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2123 comments I have read 18 and could read Eyeless or The Last Temptation of Christ but would prefer to red one of the James that Kristel and I have not yet read such as What Maisie Knew.

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 554 comments I have the rest of Henry James's listed books in my audiobooks queue for this season, so I'd go for the lst 2 of his I have not read yet-
20. The Golden Bowl
21. The Ambassadors

or Aldous Huxley's
7. Antic Hay,

Nike | 98 comments I haven't got a mail from you this month. Or maybe you haven't send them yet?

I haven’t sent it yet, but feel free to vote anytime. I will send it probably Saturday.

I've already read 30 of this lot and there is only one on my TBR shelf (Artist of the Floating World, Ishiguro). I might use that month to deal with the quarterly read, unless an easy-to-find book gets picked.

message 13: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 561 comments I’ve read 13, the only Ishiguro I haven’t read is A Pale View of Hills. There’s nothing that particularly jumps out this month, so I’ll wait to see what gets picked.

Karen | 422 comments I just bought What I Loved so that has my vote. I would love to reread Platero and I though. I love that book so much.

message 15: by George P. (last edited Aug 22, 2023 10:23AM) (new)

George P. | 701 comments I've read just 13 of these, or 27%. There seem to be more than the usual number of obscure ones in this month's group, but also a few well-known ones.
I'm going to vote for Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The only J Joyce I've read before is the "Dubliners" stories and I'm interested in Irish writers since our visit there last year. Some of the others are in my to-read list, like Last Temptation... but pretty far down the list.
If a Henry James novel gets picked I won't be reading it.

I would really like a reread of …the Artist as a Young Man. I just picked up a used copy for the shelf.

Don’t forget to vote.

Please vote to break the tie. The poll is here. /poll/show/2...

Kristel (kristelh) | 5047 comments Mod
The winners are Eyeless in Gaza - Huxley and a Thousand Cranes. The TBR number for September is #6

What will you be reading?

message 20: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 851 comments I will def be squeezing in Eyeless in Gaza..... since I voted for it! I read A Thousand Cranes some years ago. It might be nice to reread, but it won't be a priority.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5047 comments Mod
A Thousand Cranes was beautifully written but I doubt that I will be doing a reread. I will need to try to check out a ILL copy of Gaza closer to October.

message 22: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1667 comments Excited for eyeless in Gaza, will def be reading.

message 23: by Pamela (last edited Aug 26, 2023 12:24AM) (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 561 comments I’ll be reading Thousand Cranes, I’ve had that waiting for a while. I quite like the sound of Eyeless in Gaza, I’ll see if I can fit it in after the other BOTM and my TBR takedown book.

message 24: by George P. (new)

George P. | 701 comments I read Thousand Cranes two years ago. I'm not wanting to read Eyeless in Gaza now but probably some day. It's somewhat long and I have other irons in the fire at present trying to read more translations and books by women writers.
Hopefully we will pick Portrait of the Artist next time around but I may have read it by then.

message 25: by Mette (new)

Mette (therealmette) I might read Eyeless in Gaza if I find the time.

message 26: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I am looking forward to Eyeless in Gaza. A Thousand Cranes was BOTM innFebruary 2016 and I gave it 5 stars, though I noted that others did not rate it as highly
