The Gothic Project - Dracula Week 5: Chapters XXI - XXV

1) What kind of master is Dracula to Renfield, and how do Dracula's actions shape readers' opinions of Renfield?

2) Renfield’s confession: is this the most sane we have seen Renfield? What is the difference between sanity and madness in this book?

3) Mina’s ordeal is the worst thing going right now: Who is reacting to it the worst? Who is bearing up pretty well? Are these reactions what you would imagine them to be or did something regarding this take you by surprise?

4) Hypnosis was cutting-edge science at the time (as was trepanning, phonographs, etc). How do the protagonists incorporate both new technology and old beliefs in their fight against Dracula?

5) Mina is changing. What is different about the way she acts now as opposed to when she was first under Dracula’s influence?

Nancy | 239 comments Gem, your question about the difference between sanity and madness is intriguing, but I have no answer for it. I would really like to hear the opinion of other readers on this topic. Regarding Mina, as she is moving away from Dracula's attacks, she is once again showing her determination, intelligence, and strength. She is even willing to die to avoid losing her soul or hurting others.
Jonathan, her husband, displays the greatest weakness of the group; this is understandable as he is worried about Mina and also still recovering from his own trauma at Dracula's hands.
