No new nominations this month. The two polls will be compiled from the last 12 months' polls. One list will be the "Close Calls", those books that came closest to winning but couldn't quite get to the top. The other will be the "Big Losers", the books that failed miserably, garnering the fewest votes (on a percentage basis). I'll compile the data over the next few days and get the polls up a little earlier than usual.

Thanks Allan! I'm curious to see what the polls will look like.

Polls are up!

Note that on the Big Losers poll, three of the books came from the "Extremely Long" poll. In casting your vote, just consider that we have other long book commitments, if that matters to you. For that reason, I kept the top 8 books in each category to widen the choices.

Stephen Burridge | 958 comments Lots of interesting books in both polls. I’ve read half of the Close Calls but none of the Big Losers.

Agreed, I've only read three in each poll, so many of the titles are of interest. Unfortunately, I've already read Forever Peace, so I'll probably revert to my original nomination of Drowning Towers. Looking forward to Remnant Population, assuming that's the winner.

Looks like Forever Peace took a commanding lead since I last checked. I'll be joining that one (it was originally my nomination), but I don't have the Elizabeth Moon one.

Stephen Burridge | 958 comments Remnant Population is just 2 votes ahead of Hild. Close race.

Jim | 15 comments Remnant Population +1

Btw, I read Drowning Towers years ago and I remember it being quite good, as are other of Turner's books such as Brain Child.

Thanks, Jim, nice to know. I’ve set up a challenge the Worlds Without End web site to read several apocalypse books. Since I’ve already read New York 2140, I thought Drowning Towers would make a good stand-in.

Hild is another one I’ve looked forward to reading. I have it on my shelf and I’ve enjoyed Nicola Griffith’s other books.

Jim | 15 comments Thanks Allen for the Worlds Without End website recommendation -- seems like my kind of website!

I'm looking forward to Hild too, but I haven't found a physical copy yet.

My handle there is "finminer" if you feel like looking me up and seeing my challenges. I love that site, the visuals, all the book cover displays, are very cool. I also use it for data on the 38 different awards they have listed, and for posing challenges to myself to guide my reading. Not a social site really but still very useful.

The new version of the site, if they ever get it released, will have an increased focus on social interaction/community.

Winners are:

Close Calls: Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon
It was a close race, with Hild by Nicola Griffith losing by 1 vote!

Big Losers: Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman
Odd that such an acclaimed book (won both Hugo & Nebula) wound up as a big loser in our polls.
