message 1: by Naimisha (new)

Naimisha | 1 comments I usually like a single POV for the whole book, maybe an occasional chapter or two written in a different POV.

What's your taste? Many POVs or single POV?

message 2: by Maukkis (new)

Maukkis | 3 comments Sometimes it’s interesting and sort of needed and still manageable to have two POVs like for example both in a dating situation. But it’s a no from me if the differences between the both POVs is not big enough, then it just messes with my brain and I have to go back and check whos POV it is that I’m reading😄

message 3: by benedicta (new)

benedicta max? 6

message 4: by marti ₊˚⊹ (new)

marti ₊˚⊹ max 5-6, but i usually like 1 or 2 at most

➺ kath [s・ia] (kathxarchives) max can be like 4, but not a lot of authors can execute 4 POVs well, so personally I prefer 2.

message 6: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (chloesherone) | 38 comments american royals series was 5 and I don't think I could handle more than that

message 7: by Anett.A.T^.^ (new)

Anett.A.T^.^ | 7 comments Maybe like 3-4 but I really prefer 2, or like a third person, omnipresent situation following several characters, like how Throne of Glass was written...┐( ∵ )┌

message 8: by (new)

ˡ | 15 comments I like single POVs, if its romance i prefer two but thats it. When a book has too many there will always be that one POV that i hate

message 9: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Vercruysse | 114 comments I prefer one, or two dueling contrary POVs but i don’t mind a medley. After a few though it gets hard to grasp onto their different voices and perspectives

message 10: by Lynne (new)

Lynne Stringer | 344 comments If you have a lot, it definitely makes it difficult to follow. I have found that it's best to stick to two or three, at most. :-)

message 11: by Ninia Reads (new)

Ninia Reads | 2 comments two is ideal, 4 is doable.. GoT was definitely too many

Julia (Darlingstern's version) 2 is my favorite but I think I could handle up to 4 or 5

message 13: by Tina (new)

Tina (mysticalkitten29) | 16 comments Honestly if the POV’s are executed well I don’t mind reading 8 or 10 😭 So long as each character has a developed arch and a purpose bring it on!

message 14: by kitcantspell (new)

kitcantspell | 58 comments so agree w that !!! i think it depends too one the genre
romance ofc two , but thrillers or anything like that idm
i love 6-7 tbh

Lavender (Ally-Grace) (lavietothesea) It really depends on the genre, but I would say 4.

message 16: by Breauna (new)

Breauna | 14 comments 6 or 7

message 17: by Annette (new)

Annette Hernandez | 202 comments Six or Seven at most, after that it gets messy. It depends on the author though. Yet if you are going to write from a different POV then please don't make it a first-person POV

message 18: by Lyv (on hiatus) (new)

Lyv (on hiatus) 3-5 at the most. anything over i can't keep up...

message 19: by xScaredyCat (new)

xScaredyCat | 11 comments depends how interesting and good each story/character is and how often they switch, i'd say 2-3, everything over that my brain might start skipping characters i'm not too interested in. Honestly i don't know many books with multiple povs to really know, so please enlighten me if you know some good books :)

leila ⋆.˚౨ৎ | 62 comments Lyv Reads wrote: "3-5 at the most. anything over i can't keep up..."

ikr same

message 21: by Grace (new)

Grace (taylor's version) i looove when there are multiple pov's. Sometimes, the more the better
I would probably have to say 6 or 7 would be the most, but then again ive never had more than that...

message 22: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccamontgomery) | 10 comments 2-3 is best, but 4 is doable as long as they all have interesting story lines. The main story also has to progress. I've read some that feel like the story stops because they changed pov of too many characters or we go through the exact same conversation just from the other pov.

InheritanceGamesRules | 39 comments i can read like a lot but they have to be very different but it makes it better to only have like 1 or 2

message 24: by aboutThat12 (new)

aboutThat12 | 52 comments i love when there's multiple POVs i kinda feel that a one POV book is missing the thoughts of the other characters but also it only works if they label each one. i remember reading a book and each chapter was a different POV but i kept forgetting and got really confused

message 25: by Fabitha (new)

Fabitha (fabitha89) | 75 comments Well, I read all of Game of Thrones XD
Tbh it can get confusing of even boring if the characters relay the same events without adding something new to the narrative, but as long as the story is still gripping and every character has their original arc I can follow.

ashes and diamonds (darlingdearestdead) | 35 comments I love multiple POV's, but I can't handle more than 3 or maybe 4 "main" characters

message 27: by Rosa (new)

Rosa (rosaschlumpf) | 216 comments the book in a series I'm halfway thru has had around 8 POVs (give or take). if it started in book 1 I would be lost, but it's been gradually. Zodiac Academy I think started with 4, but progressed to a lot more by book 8.

✯¸.•✿ LÌV ✿•.¸✯ | 7 comments I can not handle more than five POVs but I like 1-3 POV's I love multiple mystery POV's tho

message 29: by Emily (new)

Emily Garmon (emily_garmon) | 14 comments Oh man, I really prefer 2 POV or if it's valid to the plot and characters, 3. However, I have read books with more than that, but unless the plot, characters etc is worthwhile, I don't think it's a great idea. Like Fabitha, I've read all of Game of Thrones, and I really enjoyed that series (better than the tv show, don't come for me). I think the difference in GOT is that the multiple POVs made sense. We're talking about a major fantasy landscape with characters scattered around two continents, plus islands, all players in the ultimate Game, so to me it wasn't as jarring. And I agree with Rebecca though that when you have multiple POVs it can stop the pace of the story, especially if it's just the flip side of a conversation or event.

message 30: by GHOSTY TOASTY (new)

GHOSTY TOASTY I think 2-3 povs

message 31: by I'm Funny (new)

I'm Funny | 14 comments a lot 😏

message 32: by Lauren (last edited Dec 11, 2024 08:26AM) (new)

Lauren | 1 comments I usually have 1-3 per book, but I have read 9 throughout a series. Like for example, I usually have books like the Legend series, with 2 povs per book, but there are also books like the Heroes of Olympus series that change the characters narrating per book, with 9 characters that narrate throughout the series, with 5 ish per book, but this can get frustrating sometimes when one character can be in a tight situation, and the pov switches, and you have to read the other person before going back to what you wanted to read.

message 33: by (last edited Jan 06, 2025 12:10AM) (new)

 (HP marathon) | 602 comments 2-3.

message 34: by Kaylee (new)

Kaylee Tackett | 4 comments No more than 2

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

No more than 4 or it gets REALLY confusing.

message 36: by Mulli (new)

Mulli | 5 comments i have never read a book more than 3 povs......i am currently reading elantris where theres 3 povs ...i also read the grandest games which has 3 povs....never read a book more than 4 povs so ig my max limit is 3

message 37: by (ǴǰٰDZ) (new)

✨(ǴǰٰDZ) | 152 comments the max I can handle is 4.

message 38: by (ǴǰٰDZ) (new)

✨(ǴǰٰDZ) | 152 comments my brain will die otherwise. I prefer two though.

message 39: by (new)

(HP marathon) | 602 comments I prefer just one, though.

message 40: by ~Betty (new)

~Betty June~ | 58 comments Max is six for me, but i have been known to put down books that don't have two povs at least

message 41: by MerrieAnne (new)

MerrieAnne | 118 comments Max is 4 for me. More than that it is to much. But I prefer 2.

message 42: by Cassie (new)

Cassie | 92 comments No limit as long as each character's voice is distinct and I can separate each. I should be able to know which pov I'm in without looking at the chapter title.

message 43: by Gary (new)

Gary Feinstein | 6 comments I prefer either 1 or 2

l i z [save the sharks❗] ˖𓍢ִִ໋🌊🦈˚˖𓍢ִ✧˚. | 74 comments not me trying to figure out who everyone was talking to named max-

i can normally read up to 5-6 but if im having a day where the brain aint braining, i have to switch to a single double pov.

message 45: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 140 comments I can handle multiple POVs if it doesn't interfere with the story itself. For instance, some books in verse or about events from the Pov of a whole class of students that are various lengths add to the story. Most of the time, though, I prefer less than 8, at least on one book.

message 46: by Edgar Jahir (new)

Edgar Jahir (Taylor’s Version) | 5 comments I feel like the multiple povs are nice but can become too much once it becomes more than 5 because then you are starting to struggle to keep up with characters

message 47: by Maxine (new)

Maxine (the_iron_maiden) | 16 comments Not sure if I have a preference at this point in time. I think it really has to do with the author, how they utilize their characters, and how good they are at it.

So long as it's well-written, I'll take as many different character's viewpoints as the author deems fit to share. Doesn't matter if it's 1st-person or 3rd-person.

If it's badly written and isn't obvious that we've shifted characters, I tend to get confused by multiple 1st-person povs, and would prefer to just focus on one character.

message 48: by Diana (new)

Diana Jaques | 16 comments Ooo, this is such a great question.
I truly think it depends on how well a book is written.
If a book explains everything and keeps all point of view clear and not confusing, it doesn't matter how many there is.

But if a book isn't written brilliantly, I'd say like 2.

message 49: by Amanda Frekot (new)

Amanda Frekot | 34 comments mr terrupt series was like 7 and that was far too many, so maybe like 1-3?

Bookwormpolitican | 7 comments I can do about 10 if they have a distinct difference in perspective or actions.
