Are beauty contests right? Or do they exploit young people?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree. Beauty contests are totally abusing young people into entertaining some and making some feel insecure. They go way too far out, and have no reason to be in the world. Plus, it all goes back to feminism. Why aren't there pageants for men? Because people get more entertainment out of watching women strut down a runway in in-modest clothing that shows too much off. Not to mention, if it's a TV show that can't be seen live they edit the crap out of those and make everyone else feel ugly. It's terrible! Beauty contests are total- pardon me- bullshit, and should be canceled. (This goes back to the media taking over. They film women wearing clothing that shows off their skin for people to watch!)

Agreed.
((Audrey, please bleep out the cuss word! Thanks.))

I am not an expert in this kind of field and I am glad I'm not one XD

But there are some points I would like to raise

First of all...what is the point of beauty pageants
"The most obvious detrimental effect of beauty pageants is enforcing an inappropriate body perception for men and women. Unlike the majority of so-called “average women, the beauty of such contests participants is cherished and rehearsed; this is the case when natural beauty is heavily supported by the efforts of visagistes and dressers."

, secondly it gives kids and women the wrong idea about life as it is
Beauty contest makes female models ( and even children) to live up to a very very high unnatural standards for human (Which is highly unnecessary and unhealthy)
They have to adapt to a lifestyle of constantly worrying about how they look rather than maintening and nurchering the true beauty that is inside a person (plz excuse me for my bad spellings)

Rather than that it gives other females higher standards as they think they have to keep up with these so called "Beauty Queens"so they go on and destroy their health by going on these stupid diets (that I don't think any doctor would approve of lol)and sometimes even surgeries...

P.S Hi Krishna, education is certainly important but it is not the most important thing

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Ummmmmm.....no it isn't
Education is not the most important thing...

Surely it is more important than the other beauty of a person but again let me emphasize....... It is not the most important thing

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

*outer* not *other*

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Ummm... I can't answer that XD

It is more an opinion rather than a hard fact

I mean if you want to think education is the most important then I guess I can't define you....but
Do you really think that education, would really exist without life?
And this "Education" is only the knowledge mankind has observes over thousands of years and record it into something that is called the brain...
We don't really know what is truely out there do we? We observe.....we hear...everything is through our brain!!!!! And I can tell you now that the brain is not right!!!!(It is actually more wrong than it is right through some stupid psychology stuff XD)

We don't even know if "reality" is really a thing because we can't look outside the box....or in this case the brain

So in my opinion education is not the most important thing...
Idk....maybe Love....or Peace....or health....or whatever people think is right

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol that's fine

Humm......I can tell you now that life will not actually be dark without education for some people....how do you think our ancestors live on this very earth for millions of years?

One thing though.......maybe the word you are using does not fit your description very well.....instead of "education" maybe you should say"information"

They are 2 completely different things

Beside!!!!!!! Let me emphasize this again....!!!! Do we really know if the information we gathered through all this time is true?(I'm not having a go at any scientist that are both living and death lol, just asking the big question) what is it really out there?
It is true that....we as human cannot be this evolve and this high up on the food chain without what we learn teach and pass down to the next generation of youngsters

It is also true that the knowledge we have gathered pay an awesome price for our hard work after thousands of years....Science....Technology they all are a miracle but yet......Science itself also shows that knowledge....is not all that requires for us to live our life to the fullest!

Let's call this even....
Maybe "education" and "knowledge" are just 2 elements of the big periodic table that is life....and it cannot maximise our life to it full capacity if no other elements are there!

P.S thank you for the discussion

Everything is important

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my gosh will you just give up lol jk!!!!!!

Let's put it this way

Education is ONE OF THE MOST important things!!!!!!!
C'mon surely you can see that there are more stuff that are just as important as education!!!!

Let put it this way......Education!!!! What is it for? It is for the purpose of making our life more civilised and better am I not correct?

Now let see.....don't you think that there something there that is also important?
Yes!!!! Ofcourse!!!!!!!!!! Education was created to SERVE LIFE!!!!!!!! Life!!!!! Ok

What good would education be if you can't apply it to the real world?
You would just be a sitting in a room with a bunch of doctorates and master degrees with no social life at all...

Education is use to prepare us for the world!!!! FOR LIFE MATE!!!!!!!!
Education is nothing without life!!!!!ok!!!!!!!
I am not saying it is not important...It is very crucial!!!!but not I repeat not....the most important factor

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Alright fine!!!!!!! Let's put it another way then

Sooooo.....you reckon education is the only thing....the only thing that is helping us striving to a perfect life? No it is not ok

First of all intelligent.....(also not the most important but crucial)
A person with intelligent is one who can adapts and learn quickly!!!!! Not to mention there are all different types of intelligent
Social Intelligent
Textbook Intelligent
Adaptability (As I mention)
And also the skill to apply education to the real world!!!!!! Have you seen "The Big Bang Theory?"
Sheldon Cooper is a PhD physicist who graduated from high school when he was 14!!!! A brilliant man.......the problem with him is that he lack the "Adaptability"
He lack "social skill"
He even lack the ability to apply his knowledge to life and the real world!!!!! Ok

You see It is not a person with only education that can actually strive and succeed in life!!!!!! There are a lot of things!!!!!!

Not just intelligent(as I said before important but it is Doo-Doo- Butter if the other factors in life are not helping it)

There are many more factors in life that make you happy and successful that are not just education...

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

You miss interpreted what I said.....success is not just "having a lot of money"

Oh and I can assure you that education doesn't guaranty respect.....ok

Respect only come only when you respect others....when you let other acknowledge you....not just by letting them know how frikin smart you are or how frikin educated you are !!!!!!!!

Love , kindness , intelligent , HEALTH.....etc

To really become successful you need to be a well rounded person
Education are not more important or less important than anything.....it is crucial just like other factors

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Alright I believe I can answer your question

It is true that many people are risking there life just to get alittle bit of knowledge as it is very important.

I can't judge and I also don't know how hard they work because I am way to lucky.....And it pains me to think of this

But you know why people are going crazy over knowledge? Because they want "change"(by change I mean both a change in there life and money for food)
That's true as you said....very important!!!!

But don't you think there are people in the world who are also fighting just as hard for something like LOVE
Don't you think there are also many people out there who are risking there life to fight for something they called PEACE
Man....people fight for acknowledgement,peace,love,education,respect......like crazy!!!!!!! They want to change life...not just there's but other's too!!!!!

Look,I know I shouldn't really be criticising your opinion but you are just looking at one corner rather than the whole picture!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Look I know how important education is
I try very hard myself but
It is not the most important thing in life ok!!!!!!

Can u see there are things that are just as important?just as crucial?and just as need in our life?

Education stands with other factors as the elements for making our life a better thing!!!!! It cannot stand alone

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I never did like beauty pageants. But for me it was because I saw how it affected my sister first hand. She did one when she was ten and it was brutal.

I also think it's hard for people to see Ms Universe and expect to look like that because the judges and society tend to have such unrealistic expectations and perceptions of beauty.

message 15: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 15, 2015 08:29PM) (new)

I literally had come up with the idea for this when my sister Rachel, my dad, & I got bored a few months ago on Sunday night & decided to watch Miss Universe (it was my first time watching it, to be be completely honest; I was pissed at what I was seeing).
First of all, as soon as you start watch it, what are you hit with? Extremely thin women who are heavily made up (& some having surgeries) & their outfits costing about a gazillion bucks. What are they teaching people already?: In order to be beautiful, to be chosen & accepted by important people & society, you must be this certain weight, have this certain look to your face & need to be rich enough & sexy enough to wear this outfit. LIES. ((& then there's the choosing the countries the girls represent with a mix of racism, but let's not get off topic.)) Let me tell you, they didn't wake up that morning looking like that.
Second of all, the Bathing Suit Portion of the competition. Basically the same thing as before, but slightly altered. Flat stomach, thighs that don't really touch, even skin tone, sexy in a bathing suit....those are the dang qualifications. If you observe all the girls who were chosen for that portion of the contest very closely, you can already tell the depths of the qualifications. Unrealistic expectations that have to be achieved with brutal processes. Bad lessons taught, once again.
Third of all, any Q&A portion of the competition that includes intelligence & thinking & correct public speaking doesn't really matter in the publics' eyes. Just because everyone will emphasize this is the most important portion of the contest, anyone with open eyes to the way society works knows they all believe that how the contestants look is the most important part, forget the part about how they think.
Another thing I would like to bring up: What is the point of the yearly beauty contests? Are they trying to find the best of the best? That's never gonna happen. There will always be someone better. They're trying to find the best in the city, the state, the country, the world? Might as well stop the search now, because it won't end. There's always someone better, & the "best" change constantly. It's a waste of time.
& of course, there's body image. In one portion of the competition, they showed clips of all the Miss Universes. The one fact that stood out to be above all? Times have changed. You see the girls from the first M.U. pageant & the 2015, the first girls have fuller bodies & more meat on them. 2015 girls? They're practically sticks. (Beautiful in their own way, but unhealthy sticks.) & if they were any fuller, let me tell you, these days they wouldn't be accepting them. They'd be accepting extremely thin, no more.
It makes women, young people, & even men feel insecure & worthless about themselves. That's not right!

& lastly, what is the point of all this?!?!?! Everyone in the world is beautiful, everyone in the world is handsome, everyone in the world is talented, everyone in the world is amazing!!! Why do we have to compete? Everyone of us is amazing, let's embrace the beauty & uniqueness we all share in healthy, happy ways!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't written a debate that long in quite a while xD

@Loretta I agree and I don't really like how many people that there is only a certain type of person that is considered beautiful.

Si, everyone is actually equally beautiful in their own unique way, whether they see it or not.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I think so too. I always tend to look at everyone and go wow they are all so lovely. I just wished I thought that way about myself too.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Hayley wrote: "I think so too. I always tend to look at everyone and go wow they are all so lovely. I just wished I thought that way about myself too."

That's me on & off. We all struggle with accepting the truth about ourselves (that we're all beautiful) 'cause we look at other people & compare ourselves :/
I'm trying to stop doing that, & luckily succeeding!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

My sister took a humorous approach to the Miss Universe contest while I was yelling my argument when we watching it:
"They do it for the job opportunities! Do you know how good it would look on my résumé if it said I was Miss Universe?! I'd be rich!!! *does dramatic fake swoon & lands on couch* Of course that's never gonna happen to me 'cause the contest would be too much of a pain." xD

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I think that we tend to compare ourselves for so many reasons. I do it too, it's human nature.

That's the truth.

I also don't get the whole thing with plastic surgery...it's horrible, & it makes most people who get it look really bad.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, & then they don't look appealing!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Exactly. You're wrecking your true self.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

I myself will never get plastic surgery. Like I have a dimple on each of my cheeks & I hate them, but I'm not gonna get surgery on them. I might come out of that surgeon's office looking like my cheeks went through a wood chipper. NO THANK YOU.

I have one on each cheek, & one on my chin. I'm fine with the chin one, but not the cheek ones.
