Verity by Colleen Hoover

Please discuss here and remember to use spoiler tags as needed, as everyone reads at different speeds and may start at different times.

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Kristie | 5897 comments I read this one this past year with my face to face book club. Be aware there is actually a bit of sex in it. (Just a heads up for someone expected a mystery thriller and not expecting that to pop up.)

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks of it. I gave it 3.5 stars, but just about everyone in my book club loved it.

My review: /review/show...

Pamela Sepulvado Sepulvado Deroche I read the book when it was first released. I gave it a 5 stars review. 1 star for originality and I was emotionally invested in the first chapter , 1 star for hot sex scenes , 😊, 1 star for shock factor, 1 star because I binge read it and couldn’t put it down, 1 star for book hangover.

Marinka | 29 comments I’ve read that one last year, It got two stars from me. Sorry. 😬

Chiara (chicksn) | 46 comments I have actually also already read it and just be aware about the fact that I did totally not expect the plot going in THAT direction (some people would need some trigger warning)

Marinka | 29 comments Bryana, this was my first book by Hoover and probably the last one, I saw all the hype and decided to give it a try. I know she has a mob of followers but I find her writing kind of juvenile with very absurd and unrealistic plot. Maybe if I was 20 years younger and more impressionable I’d enjoy the “shock value of this story.
I hated the main character and was irritated by her thoughts and actions throughout the book..

I do enjoy a good mystery but this novel was not the one for me. 😊

Robin | 14 comments i have already read this too and did like it though i dont know if it deserves as much hype as it got. there are a lot of things that are controversial and made me say wtf did i just read several times throughout the book. my biggest complaint is there is something left open for interpretation towards the end of the book. while it makes for great conversation about the book to see different perspectives, it also frustrates me because i am not a fan of ambiguous endings or things left hanging.

Kristie | 5897 comments I agree with it not really earning the amount of hype it received. I enjoyed it, but did find some of it wildly unrealistic. I am also not a fan of ambiguous endings, but my book club loved being able to discuss it.

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments I read my first CoHo this year and then a friend gave me this one to read also. Seems that the holidays will be a good chance to open it up :)

Mansi V | 3 comments I read this around 2 years ago and loved it! Although some parts were predictable, I found it really gripping and read it really quickly. But this was at a time I was just getting back into reading and so I think it was perfect for that time but I'm intrigued if I'd like it as much now as a much more critical and experienced reader.

Samantha Davis (sjdavis) | 1 comments I love CH. Sadly, this was not a favorite of mine. I love plenty of twists, but this didn't have me gripping my book asking for more..

Carol (fleter) | 303 comments Just getting started - 13% in. So fat I agree with the comments on juvenile writing style but the premise is unique! Can’t wait to have some time to make more progress.

Pritee (priteereads) Greetings, everyone! Wishing you all joyous holidays and enjoyable reading!

In 2023, I picked up Verity as my first book, and oh, it was mind-blowing! The book certainly explores dark themes, but it grips you from the very first page. By the end of the book, you'll surely feel thrilled.

It's the kind of book that lingers in your thoughts for a considerable time—you won't easily shake it off until another book captures your attention.

So happy reading!

Carol (fleter) | 303 comments Finished this last night. This is my first book from this author, and from other reviews and the comments here, I gather this is a love it or hate it book. For me the writing was amateurish and I couldn’t get over that. The sex…for me it was over the top for the sake of including sex scenes. Although the twist at the very end helps explain it all, it also left questions, perhaps intentionally. And just made me think all of the characters were awful people! We read The Only One Left earlier this year that had a few common themes and I liked that one better. I understand that this book is a bit of a departure from the author’s other work so I will give her another try, but this one didn’t work great for me. 2 stars.
