Mariangel | 694 comments I am enjoying the book very much.

I find her family's reaction to wanting to become Catholic when she was in the 3rd grade very American. Hard to imagine it happening that way in other countries.

Mariangel | 694 comments Having read other movie star’s biographies or autobiographies, I find it very surprising how everyone in the industry tried to protect Dolores when she started working in movies. Other actresses were not treated like that.

God's intervention?

I have finished the first part (when Dolores entered the monastery) and started the second.

From second part, chapter 37:

It is the most beautiful church I have ever seen—and not simply because it’s ours. I truly feel that it answered the problem I’ve always had with all the paraphernalia—the stuff—one finds in Catholic churches that hasn’t much to do with genuine piety. Ostentatious statues of saints don’t muster a sense of worship in me or make me want to pray to a particular one. It just makes me angry over the money that was poured into making those figures that could have done some real good.

This is debatable, and obviously the way Dolores looked at it, but others don't think the same. In fact, many people before have said the same. For instance, Judas Iscariot, when the woman anointed the feet of Jesus.

´¡²õ³Ü²Ô³¦¾±Ã³²Ô | 70 comments The book is very entertaining although confusing, due to the frequent changes of writers and time.

Since I know many of the actors from movies shown on TV, it looks as though I am watching them and I was also pleased to know that many actors treated her with respect.

What she says about churches with images, it's natural for her. She was educated in the U.S. and it's what she has experienced since she was a child.

Here in Spain the many Visigoth, Romanesque, Gothic and neo-classical churches have always been adorned with wonderful statues and sculptures that are true works of art. Everyone knows that they are not idols but rather the most beautiful possible representations of those represented.

Beauty leads to God.

The Catholic Church contributes, through the faithful, to alleviating world poverty and is the organization most dedicated to this. Not only with money but with the dedication of many people.

Suppose the Vatican sold all the works of art, it would make a lot of money because some powerful person would buy them. But then what?

And the spiritual value for millions of people who pass through both the Church and its dependencies? Is it worthless?

I see her beautiful and simple church similar to many in Spain, in religious schools.

Jill A. | 882 comments Interesting side-note on art and worship: U of Notre Dame just opened a brand-new art museum which includes a chapel (with the Blessed Sacrament) as a place to display some of the fabulous art that was created for just such spaces and purpose.

Mariangel | 694 comments I have also finished. What an inspiring book!

As we read about how the Abbey changed from the time when Dolores entered till the present day, I kept thinking of the similarities with “In this house of Brede. The novel is very realistic when compared with the trajectory at Regina Laudis. And “The ear of the heart is a page turner too, as the novel was.

I had no trouble following the two voices of Mother Dolores and Dick as I was reading.

Steven R. McEvoy (srmcevoy) | 145 comments I only just now finished the book. I read it in bits and spurts over almost 6 weeks. I greatly enjoyed it and was moved by it.
