Team Challenge
Self-paced (through 2025)

Please take some time and choose a team name. You will also need to choose which monster you want to catch first. Choose wisely because some monsters require more than others. Let me know when you have made your choices.

Team
Christina T
Amanda

Important Links
Monster Depository (check-in)

Mothra
Rodan
King Ghidorah
Methuselah
Scylla
Behemoth
Amhuluk

Rules
°Each monster has specific chains and/or tasks that need to be completed.
Examples:
1. Create a chain of 3 using titles consecutively (ABC)
-All the Light We Cannot See
-Becoming Mrs. Lewis
-Catching Fire
2. Create a chain of 3 with "dog" in the titles
-Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike
-The Dog Stars
-Hot Dog Girl

°One person should NOT complete a whole chain by themselves. This is a team challenge. However, if a monster has multiple chains and a slower reader can only/want to only read for 1 or 2 chains (they must read at least one), then the other two faster readers on the team can complete the other chains between the two of them.
°You may choose which monster from the list to capture first but you MUST complete it BEFORE starting a new creature.
°You may use or drop articles: A, An, The
°Standard Rules Apply
°Since you have chosen to play non-competitively, you will play a self-paced game. You may choose to stop any time you want or continue until you have completed all monsters.

Completions

Since you are not competing, you should post completions in your thread and organize a monster completion post to be submitted to the Monster Depository. This is a suggested way to organize it. If you have a better way, I am okay with that.

Individual completion:
Task:
Book:
Pages:
Fits:

Monster Completion (this will be in your thread)
Arm 1: link to each completion (should be 3 links here)
Arm 2: link to each completion (should be 3 links here)
Leg 1: link to each completion (should be 3 links here)
Leg 2: link to each completion (should be 3 links here)

Monster Depository Post:
Team thread link: (link to your thread)
Team SS link (non-competitive teams mark N/A): N/A
Completed Monster: (link to your monster completion post - you can name it the monster or just provide the link - either works)
Next monster: [name of next monster you want to catch]

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments Hi Amanda! It's nice to be on a team again with you. I'm terrible with coming up with names but I like alliterations....
Creature Captors
Monster Murderers
Titan Tricksters
Kaiju Killers

As far as what monster to start with...I haven't been able to find a list like in the Halloween Roundup 2.0 but I'm assuming all the Bookmarks signifies one monster, right? So maybe just starting with the first Bookmark? Godzilla?

Godzilla

description

Godzilla is depicted as a prehistoric sea monster that was awakened and empowered by nuclear radiation. Although Godzilla doesn't like humans he will fight alongside humanity against common threats. His signature weapon is its atomic heat beam. He has immense physical strength and muscularity. As an amphibious creature, he can traverse the earth but can also breathe underwater. He is immune to conventional weapons and has the ability to regenerate.

To capture Godzilla you need 4 chains to chain him up so he can be removed to a secure facility.

Complete the following tasks:
Arm 1: Read a chain of 3 books with sea monsters in the story
Arm 2: Read a chain of 3 books with muscles shown on the cover (hot men count!)
Leg 1: Read a chain of 3 books with someone/something that can breathe underwater (mermaids & paranormal creatures count!)
Leg 2: Read a chain of 3 books that start with a letter in Godzilla but it must be the same letter for all 3 books (you will need to decide which letter to use as a team)

message 11: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments Well we wont have a problem with arm 2 LOL

I'd be happy to at least read 1 same book for any of the others so we can buddy read it for snowball (if you want)

And I think the best Godzilla letter is probably A but if you have something planned for any of the other letters I'm always flexible.

I'm gonna make our whole monster tracking post in my next post and can just link our individual completions to that

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments Trying to align one's you haven't read with some extra points that the snowball challenge gives that are offered by KU and that has 300 or more pages.... sounds like a challenge! I'll pretty much read anything MM as long a I can get it through KU so if you have some suggestions for buddy reading books I'm all ears.

For starting with same letter....I agree an A might be easiest. I'm looking through my Amazon KU wishlist right now looking for A titles that will give bonus points (snow on Cover or HIT or MISS author initials) but all I'm finding are books less than 300 pages.

message 14: by Christina T (last edited Dec 03, 2023 04:15PM) (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments Found something that might work for Muscles.

Broken Fangs by Skylar Sweeney over 300 pages and author's initials are in MISS.

Cover of Broken Fangs Broken Fangs (Hollywood Creatures, #1) by Skylar Sweeney

message 15: by Christina T (last edited Dec 03, 2023 04:24PM) (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments I can't find any A's. All the ones I was finding was less than 300 pages. How about an O?

One Man's Trash (The Heretic Doms Club, #1) by Marie Sexton Marie Sexton I'm not sure what type of MMs you like. I'll really read anything but like more lighthearted better than dark but will read dark ones as well. I just need to not read them a whole bunch on a row. This one has author's initials in MISS and then we only have to come up one more O which I have several of. But if you've found something else I'm easy like that. It just needs to be either free or KU.

message 16: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments I didn’t realize the 300 page limit! I’m totally okay with not doing the buddy reads if you prefer. Neither of those ones is totally jumping out at me currently.i generally read everything too but I know that Sexton series is pretty heavy BDSM and I’m not huge on vampires (and think we’ll probably have to read them later). I do do a lot of rereads though so if I’ve read it that’s okay! Just have to check the reread rules. Let me see what I can find as well that would work but you’re totally free to start anything while I look

I promise I’m actually not at all picky, just been in a weird reading mood and don’t want to hit a slump

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments For muscles I’ve heard this one is really good
The Blacksmith and the Ex-Con (Farthingdale Ranch, #2) by Jackie North (I’m a librarian so can update page count). A lot from that series and the spin off would probably work

I’m gonna search more but my baby just fell asleep on me so be back later!

message 18: by Christina T (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments I get the reading slump for sure. If it's not something I'm particularly interested in it will take me upwards of a week to read one book. I'll keep seeing it aside to read something else. I'll read that one for Muscles. It's funny to me whenever I see the stock photo on multiple bookcovers. I can't remember which book I read last year that had that same guy probably because the book was just meh.

message 19: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments Are you sure? I found other muscles that would work if it doesn't look good! We could take turns choosing 1 book for a buddy read with each monster and then the rest read what we want? Since we're playing non competitively I don't really want to force each of the books to be over 300 especially since we get more points for intials in MISS than we do for BR (which is probably why you were looking for both I see that now lol).

And I'm the same with stock cover models. If it weren't for goodreads I'd probably read the same books multiple times on accident because I'd have no idea which one I had already read

We could also instead of muscles BR (or in addition to, but I don't want to make all the decisions lol) read: Let Your Hearts Be Light by Fae Quin for Godzilla and then get snow on the cover

message 20: by Christina T (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments I'm seriously ok with any book. You've read so many more MM books than I have it's easier on me to let you guide our reading for the buddy reads than for me to look for a book then see if you've already read it. I like the challenge of finding books to read but the more difficult the more my anxiety kicks in. It's one of the main reasons I don't find a lot of Scavenger Hunt books when I play The Bachelor Challenge.

Oh also, you'd know which books you'd be willing to reread if one fits a task. Although, I haven't checked out the rereading rule yet.

That snow one looks like it might be a fun book. I love a Grumpy/Sunshine trope.

message 21: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments I totally get it, just if I start to get overbearing or make it not fun for you please let me know (can you tell this is where my anxiety kicks in lol)

Should we just start with Let your Hearts Be Light then and do L for Godzilla? We can then just if we're doing something over 300 for any of the other limbs post it and see if the other wants to join or not. I will probably be doing the Jackie North book for muscle as well if you were interested in both. (I think it's also grumpy/sunshine).

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments Huzzah!! The Buddy read page count got lowered to 100!! Much more feasible since we're playing this one non competitively :)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments Amanda wrote: "Huzzah!! The Buddy read page count got lowered to 100!! Much more feasible since we're playing this one non competitively :)"

Yay! I swear that majority of my books in my TBR are under 300 so that makes me very happy. As soon as I clear out one of the KUs in my library I'll download Let Your Hearts Be Light. For some reason I've completely maxed out my KU subscription with borrowing a full 20 books. I'll have to clear some out before I can dl another. I do this all the time and then have an argument in my head about which ones I should and shouldn't get rid of since I can't possibly read all 20 at once. At least one of them is No longer offered on KU so I can't get rid of it until I read it for sure....🤯

message 24: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (bookoutbelow) | 1056 comments I’m the same way! I’m convinced if I remove one it’ll be taken off KU or I’ll just forget about it completely

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments So far my Tarot Card challenge hasn't been great working with this one but my new task is to read a book with a Villain so I'm hoping Landfall by X. Aratare works. It has a crazy archeologist and the past books keep mentioning Cthulhu so I'm hoping the "Sea monster" is in there. If not there are Mermen, there are muscles on the cover, and it starts with L which I think is the letter we decided to go with, right?

message 28: by Amanda (new)

message 49: by Christina T (last edited Jan 04, 2024 10:37AM) (new)

Christina T (crysteena73) | 330 comments My thoughts on Catch and Release are torn. The first half is so funny. Jerry (the older fisherman friends of Joe) was hilarious to me and it cracked me up they named the Merman Dave of all things. I totally enjoyed the first half but the last half just depressed me. Star crossed lovers. A language barrier never resolved. A person who can't live in the water. An ocean dweller who can't live on land. A sort of HEA but it wasn't enough for me. I pretty much hated it but the first half was so good! With as quickly as you read you probably could read it pretty fast so there's that.
I'm torn on recommending it but because the first half was so good I ended up rating it 3 Stars. Also it's KU so I didn't feel like I wasted my money and I giggled enough to feel like I didn't waste my time either so 🤷‍♀
